Has anyone had experience with the Jose Eber hair straightener or clipless curling irons that they sell at mall kiosks. My sixth grader wants the straightener and keeps mentioning it when we talk about Christmas. She and her friends got their hair curled at a mall kiosk (with one of the moms present) and they all came home wanting either the curling iron or the straightener.

Oh, and did I mention that they cost $120!!! I saw them on ebay for cheaper (around $50-60 with shipping), but still feel like the price is high.

If you have experience with these can you tell me if
a) they are any better than other straighteners/curling irons? And...
b) is there a way to get them cheaper other than ebay?

Thanks so much!!

I wouldn't waste my money (or damage my hair). The Chi or Sedu are the only way to go IMHO both are around $100-$125, but well worth it. My hairdresser got my Chi for me at a beauty supply store for pros on sale.

Yikes! That's a bit higher than what I was thinking! She may need to embrace her wavy hair! LOL!!

I agree. The Chis are pretty much the way to go with a hair straightener. I actually have a Paul Brown that I got from a salon that I love, but its also expensive.

As for the ones they sell at a mall kiosk, I had a friend get one that was supposed to curl her hair and straighten it depending on how it was used. It was pretty expensive but ended up being a total waste of money. It didn't work.

I've had experience with both high-end and mid-range straighteners. Here's my advice...

First, forget Jose Eber. Don't even go there. You're paying for the name and the infomercials.

The mid-range (around $35) straighteners work quite well. However, none of mine lasted more than a year or two.

The high-end (I have a Chi that cost about $100) straighteners work very well. My Chi doesn't actually get my hair any straighter, or work any faster, than my $35 Hot Tools did. But the difference is that my hair *stays* straighter, especially in humid weather. However, my Chi gets hotter (it does not have a temperature adjustment) and is more likely to cause burns. This also might make it more likely to damage hair, though I've used it for a year and a half with no visible damage.

Considering your DD's age and experience, a mid-range straightener is probably more appropriate. Especially since her hair is wavy and not really curly. If she doesn't really get into it, you haven't wasted a lot of money. And if she does, you can upgrade to a high-end straightener in the future.

We have recent experience with this as DD13 hates her beautiful thick wavy hair. *sigh* Hopefully one day she will embrace it but for the recent past, she has been straightening it. We started w/a cheap one and it didn't do great but she was happier. Then we broke down & got a Chi from Amazon.

She loved it! It was $100 and I was shocked how straight & fine it made her hair look. HOWEVER, after 2 months, it died. The online retailer that sold it through Amazon, to their credit, did offer to send a replacement but only if I returned the paperwork, iron in the complete box, plus another $18 for shipping, plus whatever it would cost me to mail. We did not save the box & when I looked at it further online, it states Farouk does not honor online sales.

So I decided to cut my losses & we went shopping for another iron. The Chis in B&M stores were all $150 & up & too much for me. She found a Remington - pink & brown - at BB&B for $40 plus we used 20% off.

She's had it for at least a month & it works just as nicely as the Chi! She's completely happy & the end of my long tale would be to give it a try as a good starter iron if nothing else.

i have very wavy and thick hair and i use the hot tools products. from the straightner to the curling iron. I love the way they work and they are very durable. I hav had mine going on 2 yrs now. you can find them at trade secret and around this time there should be some type of coupon available.
