Jon and Kate Plus 8 Official Thread - Part 8

A chicken coop? Oh man. I don't have to see that show to envision the kids squeezing the cute baby chicks and then running from the evil adult chickens. Kate shrieking and screaming in fear. C'mon TLC! I know chickens are livestock, not pets, but abusing animals for ratings isn't ok. I love chickens, but they're filthy, stinky birds that take time and work to care for. It makes about as much sense to go ahead and get Kate her own dolphin!

I also think, if it's the time so many were throwing up, that Kate was also sick. That was a hard show for me to watch..I don't do well with vomit either.

I'm a real wimp when it comes to that!:rotfl: My DH is the best, nothing phases him, I think he's made out of iron or something! Just recently my oldest DD walked down to our basement where I was doing laundry to tell me she felt sick and then proceeded to spray vomit all over the place! I was gagging like crazy while reassuring her that she would be ok! I just can't stand vomit, I suppose I'd make a horrible nurse then, right?

As far as Kate's chicken coop, I just might have to watch that! I can't imagine having chickens in my yard for all the reasons everyone here has stated already. But to see Kate doing this will probably make for a very memorable episode! And yes, I feel bad for the chickens because I can see the little 6 chasing them around until the poor things fall over! I like the idea of having fresh eggs on demand but man oh man, I would not want to take care of a chicken coop. Does that make me snobby?

Found when I googled:

That's a good question. As you probably know, many cultures around the world eat unrefrigerated eggs without getting sick. Many variables account for this. In some countries for instance, people shop frequently—even daily—rather than storing food at home. So the eggs they buy are freshly laid and quickly consumed.. However, they also do not store eggs for long periods of time -- they usually buy and consume them quickly.

Refrigerating eggs is not only a matter of safety, however. It's also the best way to keep eggs fresh. It's estimated that eggs age more in one day at room temperature than they do in one week in the refrigerator. And as eggs age, some of their cooking qualities are affected. The yolks and whites become thinner and more prone to breaking when you separate them. You'll also find these eggs harder to poach, as thin whites spread quickly throughout the poaching water instead of clustering around the yolk. And you may notice a large dent in the fat end of hard-cooked eggs. This happens as moisture and carbon dioxide evaporate from the white, allowing air to enter through the porous shell and enlarge the air space.

So how long are unrefrigerated eggs edible? I don't know. It all depends on the temperature of storage and the health of the chicken (did the chicken pass on salmonella). If we give refrigerated eggs 3-5 weeks of edibility and unrefrigerated egg ages 1 week for each day out of refrigeration we can probably say 3-5 days of unrefrigerated storage. However, there are no guarantees that it will remain safe. That's why we recommend refrigeration -- to lesson your chances of illness and to lengthen the storage time.

I hope this has helped. If I can be of further assistance, plesae let me know.

TLC knows how to get us to watch:thumbsup2 I'm betting the coop will not be in the "yard" I thought they have a barn on the property.

I wonder if she's trying to have the property declared a "farm" for tax purposes...? Anyone know the requirements for that?

Hey now that's an angle. Another way to get the kids to work for her, getting the eggs and cleaning the coop.

it's for the show. nothing more, nothing less. I don't think that the coop will be there long. Unless there's someone else coming in to take care of the maintenance and upkeep. Kate travels an awful lot for that sort of thing. Then again, so does Martha Stewart, and she has chickens at her farm.

You always sound so bitter in your post. I know you have had a very hard life but let it go sometimes. Life is to short.

I know there must be a minimum of 10 acres, and there is a minimum requirement for profit(farm must produce something). A friend has 20+ acres. She has a tree farm, berries, chickens, horses, and a neighbor farmer uses her land to grow hay for his livestock. He pays her for the hay and she pays him for the planting/harvest.

She couldn't stand the dogs- why would she get chickens:rolleyes1

I

She couldn't stand the dogs- why would she get chickens
She has yet to say she couldn't stand the dogs. She did say they took a lot of work and training and she wasn't able to do that right after she and Jon split up. She has said she loves them, and they are coming back, but I don't know if that happened.

Will be interesting to see if TLC has an agreement with someone to clean up after the chickens. I can't imagine Kate has time for that, and I can't imagine the kids would want to. They would prob enjoy getting eggs, but cleaning up the poo? Not so much.

I saw on radaronline too that Kate is having a chicken coop made.
My dh had to stay by his grandma when he was growing up, because his mom worked and his grandparents lived on a farm with cows, chicken, horses etc.
He said chicks are cute, but can die very easily.
And he said the smell is horrible. Chicken ****.

My dh hates chicken, because he remembers the awful smell, when it was time to butcher chickens. First you have to chop their heads off, then dip them in scalding water to pluck the feathers off. He about pukes when he talks about the smell, and the gutting and chopping and butchering of a chicken.

while Kate may not have said verbatim that she couldn't stand the dogs, she made it very clear that she didn't love having them. She spoke to that when she was here.

now. that's not to say that she hasn't grown to love them ... but, her feelings about the dogs were pretty clear at the beginning.

I do remember her talking about the work they were, and making faces about the pee on the rugs, etc. They definately needed someone with time to train them.

She did appear to find them hard to take care of and talked about their lack of training. But not loving having them, is not the same as not being able to stand them, which is what I was addressing. She has since said that they were hard for her to care for, and she was planning on getting them back. I hope for the kids sake she does. I never thought getting the dogs was her idea.

That said, chickens are also hard to take care of, and I can't imagine that being something she will do.

when she was here, she made faces about the dogs. period. she rolled her eyes very dramatically when mentioning that they were still at the house. (it was rumored at the time that the dogs had already gone back to the breeder) There was no mention about how much work they were.

IMO, getting the dogs was an idea cooked up by Jon and TLC. And it's ok if she doesn't like them. I don't think Kate had any interest in owning dogs, nor do I think she's a dog person. And I'm saying that because "I'm" not a dog person and react about them the same way as Kate has :lmao:

If the dogs are back, adding chickens to the mix will create even more work for someone. LOL ... I do think if the dogs were back, there would have been a picture somewhere. Or they would have been in the first episode, so people could see them.

Well, there was mention of the work when she talked about them going. Puppies are tough. If it was her, or any family that found two puppies a lot of work (you don't think the work and mess was why she rolled her eyes?), I would agree (and if it was me, I would eyeroll). That's what most everyone thought when it was discussed here..how messy they were..and messy is work. I have foster kittens all the time. I make lots of faces. They are a heck of a lot of work. I sometimes feel like I'm a slave to them and their demands. If they are very young (like this last batch), I'm up every 3-4 hours the first couple of weeks. What a pain. By the time I have had them for 6-8 weeks, I am ready for their adoption. I spend so much time getting them used to us, trained, etc (these ones were born to a feral mom, and they were a bit wild, even at their young age) that I wonder if I ever had a regular life.

However, I love everyone of them. (And yippee, this batch gets fixed next week and then up for adoption. Right now I'm saying I am taking a break. These gals (and boy) weren't litter trained, couldn't eat on their own. Messy messy messy when they did start eating on their own. They took forever to get to cover their business. A lot of work. However, I also know I will shortly get a call, and I'll have another batch. Maybe that's how she felt when she rolled her eyes. But I never heard her say she couldn't stand them.

I do wonder what happened to their return.

This is how I remember it about the dogs. Before they came Kate acted all excited and it was a gift for the kids, etc........dogs arrive, and she could not stand them. I remember scenes from past episodes of the kids running around with a bottle of cleaner and rags cleaning up the pee.
They say if you are getting a pet for your child don't expect the child to be the sole caregiver. That is a disaster waiting to happen. Its okay to ask a child to help with the care, but you don't distance yourself in the mean time.

If they are indeed getting the dogs back I'm sure there is some agreement with TLC that they pay someone to take care of them.

Its ok if Kate doesn't like the dogs, just admit it!:confused3

Why is it so important to you that she admits she does not like the dogs?
We know she has a hard time with dogs so do I.

For all you know she has admited it many times you just did not see it on tape. Should she hold a press conference? Has it been asked in interviews?

I'm not crazy about dogs but I have one. My kids wanted one. I get PO when they do not walk & feed him. I do it for him but I'm not happy about doing it.

I hope TLC is paying for someone to take care of them for her, that would be a win-win for everyone. The kids have the dogs & Kate is a not annoyed with them

never mind.

I will agree that there is nothing wrong with not wanting dogs, it's not wrong if she didn't love them, and the best thing for those dogs (beyond not being used as props for a tv show...that was the crime) was to be given to a family that did love them and would properly care for them.

I hope they do not return.
