Narcissistic personality disorder

Although most individuals have some narcissistic traits, high levels of narcissism can manifest themselves as a pathological form as narcissistic personality disorder, whereby the patient overestimates his or her abilities and has an excessive need for admiration and affirmation.

Hotchkiss's seven deadly sins of narcissismHotchkiss identified what she called the seven deadly sins of narcissism:

Shamelessness - Shame is the feeling that lurks beneath all unhealthy narcissism, and the inability to process shame in healthy ways.

Magical thinking - Narcissists see themselves as perfect using distortion and illusion known as magical thinking. They also use projection to dump shame onto others.

Arrogance - A narcissist who is feeling deflated may reinflate by diminishing, debasing, or degrading somebody else.

Envy - A narcissist may secure a sense of superiority in the face of another person's ability by using contempt to minimize the other person.

Entitlement - Narcissists hold unreasonable expectations of particularly favorable treatment and automatic compliance because they consider themselves uniquely special. Any failure to comply will be considered an attack on their superiority and the perpetrator is considered to be an "awkward" or "difficult" person. Defiance of their will is a narcissistic injury that can trigger narcissistic rage.

Exploitation - can take many forms but always involves the using of others without regards for their feelings or interests. Often the other is in a subservient position where resistance would be difficult or even impossible. Sometimes the subservience is not so much real as assumed.

Bad Boundaries - narcissists do not recognize that they have boundaries and that others are separate and are not extensions of themselves. Others either exist to meet their needs or may as well not exist at all. Those who provide narcissistic supply to the narcissist will be treated as if they are part of the narcissist and be expected to live up to those expectations. In the mind of a narcissist, there is no boundary between self and other.

This is scary. Sometimes I think it's all an act. She's too textbook to be for real. She'll start dancing really well next week, and look like trooper. She's just a normal mom when the cameras aren't rolling. This though would be another problem; it would be evil.

I think there are a lot of descriptions that "sound like" Kate .. or Jon, or me, or you, or anyone else out there. We've (the general we) been on this road before, trying to diagnose Kate, Jon, Hailey, the kids, Kevin & Jodi, etc. and none of us has enough information to make that assessment.

I agree.

You are right Madge, we have been there and other than those of us who want to try to armchair diagnose, without having all the info, as you state, we have no idea if there is a problem, or she is just the way she is, because that is her. None of us actually know her or even if we are seeing all there is to see. I think especially, if she's not liked, it's easy to say there is a mental reason or a description of why someone acts in a certain way. Some people just don't work well in certain situations, doesn't mean they have a diagnosable problem IMO. I think trying to dx any of this crowd, just makes for arguments on the thread.

Looks like some of us were right about Kate's next dance, it is the Paso Doble.

QUOTE:

After a rocky rehearsal spat in which Tony Dolovani quit on Kate Gosselin, he says things are going much better this week.

"I just got done with our first practice," he Twittered Wednesday. "The Paso is going great :-)"

Despite two terrible performances (one judge called Gosselin, 35, a "nightmare" on the dance floor), she and Dolovani, 36, managed to survive the first round.

To make it to finals, he recently told Access Hollywood that she needs to trust him more.

She is slowly coming around.

"She's starting to understand regardless of how tough I may be ... I'm on her side," he said. "I'm actually trying to make her look good ... I'm not actually going against her. I'm not trying to cause any problems for her. All I'm trying to do is make her look good."

Gosselin said that despite Dolovani being a "great" teacher, they are bound to clash occasionally.

"He has as much pressure as a teacher as I have as a student," she told Access. "It's a hard, hard thing."

I agree.

If she dances really well next week she is a really good actress.

You are right Madge, we have been there and other than those of us who want to try to armchair diagnose, without having all the info, as you state, we have no idea if there is a problem, or she is just the way she is, because that is her. It also takes the fun out of the thread if we think they have a disorder.

Did anyone else just watch ET? They had a story about how popular Kate is. The reporter sais that "Kate is living every Mom's dream". Not my dream.:lmao:

Good lord, did they really say that? She's divorced, has 8 children under 10 and is seriously lacking dancing talent yet is performing before millions of viewers for their critique. Her reality show has caused people to either love or hate her, judging her every move. Who the heck wants THAT dream? Not me, I couldn't handle all that criticism. And I certainly wouldn't sit back and be like, aaaahhh, this is the life!

I realize it's the reporter saying that Kate is living every mother's dream, not Kate. Still, it just sounds bizarre.

I really think that is part of the reason so many people dislike her. Whether they think she's nuts or not, she is WAAAYYY oversaturated on all the gossip news outlets, and it gets old after awhile.

I have no idea if the woman has a disorder or not...but as far as eye contact goes, she has plenty of it and not shy to use it! While I know there are millions with disorders, it is possible that she is just plain nasty , spoiled, angry at life, whatever. Actually I think it is an insult to those who have been diagnosed legitimately to have Kate compared to their situations. There is a name for what she has/is...spoiled brat! You teach your children by example in everything you do, something Kate needs to keep in mind every time she complains and blames everyone else but herself.

Oh man. This has 'Paso Doble' written all over it! It's the dance where the man is the matador and the woman is the cape (or sometimes even the bull). There's lots of foot stomping, arm raising and aggressive faces! I'm guessing that this will be the dance Kate & Tony are talking about, that tells Kate's story. Oh the analogies that come to mind...Kate as the bull, Jon as the matador trying to fend off her aggressive advances!

I re-watched some of these from seasons past and surely Tony will be the paparazzi, not Jon. It is very much a cat and mouse dance. I still think this is a dumb idea because every celebrity there deals with "p-people." Why did A story automatically become HER story?
Holy smoke I had forgotten how good Derek and Brooke, Shawn and Mark and Donny and Kym were the last few years. Fun to watch and so athletic.

I've looked everywhere for that article and I can't find it. It was either Inside Edition or Entertainment Tonight. I KNOW I saw it. Dh was sitting next to me commenting on it also. I'll keep looking for it.

Wish I had seen this yesterday LOL!

Report: Kate Gosselin Kicked Off Dancing with the Stars For "Diva-Like Behavior"

Tags: Dancing with the Stars, Kate Gosselin
Guess the producers of Dancing with the Stars decided enduring even one more Kate Gosselin tirade wasn't worth the effort, because she's been let go.
Finishing the job that voters somehow couldn't after her debacle of a performance Monday, the network brass told Kate to pack her bags earlier today.
The former star of Jon & Kate Plus 8, who was planning a dancing homage to that bygone classic, caused nothing but headaches since joining the cast.
Her partner, Tony Dovolani, apparently decided he had enough and threatened to quit unless he was transferred to another star. ABC did him one better.

This face is also made by fans watching Kate dance.
Jon Gosselin put up with her for 10 years. ABC? About a month. The decision was handed down Thursday morning, with a source saying Kate was "shocked."
Having become universally despised on the set (basically the Vienna Girardi of Dancing with the Stars), few tears were shed over Kate's sudden dismissal.
What was the final straw in Gosselin being kicked off?
She was pushing her luck from the moment she first set foot on the ballroom floor. Follow the jump and read exactly what got Kate kicked off this time ...
April Fools! Did you fall for this ** story?
We wouldn't blame you, since Kate's diva-like behavior requires no exaggeration. Everyone, including Tony Dovolani, can vouch that she is painful.
Nevertheless, that's not enough to get her the boot for real - in fact, the drama will likely lead to big ratings for the competition. Gotta have a story, right?
Another reason we considered for kicking Gosselin off the show was the uncovering of an elaborate, vote-rigging conspiracy in which she required her eight kids to vote for her 1,000 times each or else they would not eat for a week.
Also something we could see happening. For better or worse, Kate Gosselin is still competing on Dancing with the Stars until at least next Tuesday night. You can go ahead and ignore this fake news item.

This was pretty good Doris, but I kept thinking-lawsuit-I'm sure Kate would have her TLC lawyers lined up pretty good.

I suppose the true test of a perfect "April Fool" prank is in its believability. Even for 30 seconds. This one had me reading for about that long and then saying --- Nah!

Totally believable in the very short term, but then, reality strikes. Kate would be sooooo lawyered up! Not going to happen. :rotfl2:

Thanks, Doris for perpetuating the hoax.

It made me smile, say :yay: for a nano second!

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Who's watching the Paso Dablo? I really think Kate will tell her story of the paparazzi "following" her. Did they follow her to the Easter egg hunt Saturday with all the tups dressed alike in the FRONT YARD of her 24 acre spread with apparently no one else there to celebrate? Those pics were not taken from the road. She was in 3" pink heels (in the grass!). I was surprised to see Steve's wife helping her corral kids. Is she a friend, or paid like Steve? Who's paying him to be with her all the time? Oh well, who knows?

I do feel badly she was back in LA on Easter. But, I understand that since she signed for a Monday night live show, that can't be avoided. She's got a book coming out next week, right? Think she'll last on the show until then? Coincidence? ;)

These weren't taken from the road? They don't look like posed pics, but like the pics that used to be taken of them. With telephoto lenses, I can't tell how far away the people taking the pictures are. In any case, the kids look like they had a ball as well as Kate, doing normal stuff families do on Easter. I love seeing their happy little faces. They look so excited.

In the past the rags have said Steve's family were friends with Kate, so it looks like they spent Easter with them.

Glad to see that Jon took over for his dad time on Easter. The rags have been reporting that he has been spending a lot of time with the kiddo's while Kate is away.

Where were they taken from if not the road? They were not very good pictures. I saw about 13 & I could not tell if they were the front of the house.

How many eggs do you think they had to hide over 100 is my guess.

She really can not let the kids in the woods to look for eggs. (The Deer ticks are so out of control in this area.) We are in the hotbed of the country for Lyme Disease. With all the rain we had I'm surprised she let them out. They did have thier crock on she must be getting more chill in her old age. She must have been sinking in heals.

Kate was on Good Morning America this morning,
did anyone get to see it?
I think I may get to watch it tonite,
dh is sick with allergies, and he was sleeping by 7:00 last nite.
And, Little People, Big World starts tonite on TLC.
So, I'll be switching back and forth.
