I saw Michelle Dugger on Say yes to the dress and she didn't even want the bridal salesgirl in the room with her due to privacy. They are pretty private people--I'm surprised they actually do a show.
I'm surprised they do a show too. It certainly doen't give them much privacy. Mom may get to say no to the salesgirl in the room, but we get to go into the bedrooms of the teens while they are sleeping and watch their teeth extractions while they are under. I sure don't want to share my drooling with others LOL. There has to be better ways to share their faith. I actually have a bigger problem with them beign on, because supposedly, they don't need the money (I'm not sure I actually believe that, but that's just that..an opinion), and because of their faith, I would think they would not show their children publicly. As they watch what is going on with K & J, I would think they would shut down their show. None of expected J & K to go this way. Why take any cahnces with your kids privacy, if you don't even need the money?

by Kidshop:
Do the Duggar parents berate and demean each other on the show? Which kid is the bratty one? Would these kids sob and wail if the camera's went away tomorrow? Do they have a life w/o the show? Can the parents pay the bills if the show stops? That is your definition of exploitation.

We don't really know, since just like with K & J, they are shown how TLC wants them to be shown. I wouldn't be surprised if in their contract they were smart enough to have the right to say what may not be shown.

And actually, the meaning of exploitation is (so I guess all of these reality shows could fall under that..I hadn't actually looked the word up before):

1. The act of employing to the greatest possible advantage: exploitation of copper deposits.
2. Utilization of another person or group for selfish purposes: exploitation of unwary consumers.
3. An advertising or a publicity program.

I don't normally watch the Duggers, however, if I'm flipping around I will watch some. I just can't imagine that lifestyle. That dentist visit was very weird. In fact it seems that everything they tape is at 6am and they look like the kids were dragged out of bed. I don't know what freebies they get, but I know one is not soap--I tuned in to an episode where 4 of the girls were making homemade soap.

I wonder if they ever went or will go to Disney--now that would be a sight!

Does anyone know if the Duggar, Roloff or the Hayes families got the same perks from TLC (lawn service, cleaning, laundry, chef, clothing,trips...) as the Gosselins?
The Hayes family surely gets free Ragu. It's the same type of product placement that the Gosselins have/had with Juicy Juice. The Duggars and Roloffs I'm sure, are not paying for the vacations that they go on either. If they are experiencing something and the cameras are shooting, chances are they are not paying.

A little off topic will the Roloffs be back?

Little People, Big World returns October 12th. In the previews for the season it looks like Zac is going to need spinal surgery. I think the doctor said he has about 6 months before he is going to need it.

poor kid

I think the 22,500 was for last year. Likely, this year they made more per episode. I don't know if they are paid when they are made or when they air.

Kate had several speaking engagements in Aug/Sept at all the Women's shows, so she made some money there.

In Jon's court documents it doesn't mention the 100,000 withdrawal on Aug 10. Interesting. It doesn't make sense that Kate wouldn't notice THAT until Oct 2, but Jon doesn't accuse her of taking it. :confused3

You're right -- Jon's papers do state that he withdrew "certain funds" but doesn't state which transactions he is taking responsibility for, only that Kate withdrew over $100,000 of those transactions that were listed in the bank's email. :confused3

It just seems like they are disputing that Jon made all of the withdrawals (because they don't have access to the banking records, they wouldn't know where those withdrawals went), and then specifically lists transactions made by Kate that were not included in the email that they do know about.

I LOVE the Roloffs! I also wondered if they were returning, I'm happy to state they are returning tomorrow night.

Now that show definitely was not done just for the money -- they have made great efforts to educate the public about how they live, and a lot of the issues that little people have to deal with. There was one episode where Matt talked about how hard it was to find adoptive parents for the unwanted children, simply because people didn't understand. My DD loves that show.

They went to Disneyland in California.
They had a big RV bus, a truck and trailer.
I think they even stopped in Arizona for some kind of cowboy ho-down.
All the kids got hats and cowboy gear.

They have been to Disney. They went on a road trip in their bus and they visited Disney. I remember them being excited about Disney giving them several hotel rooms. I think they said they had never had so many rooms or maybe they have never stayed in a hotel? I can't remember which.

I go back and forth on The Roloffs. I like the show, but Matt just gets on my nerves and I can only watch him in small doses. I can't put my finger on it exactly, something about him just annoys the heck out of me. When the show is mainly about him and one his schemes I usually don't watch.

Definate freebie!!! TLC probably couldn't afford the plane fare so they probably thought this was the cheaper route or they are afraid to fly because it seems like everywhere they go its via van.

I don't think the cost of airfare was the reason, they all went somewhere, I can't think where, on the same trip where they went to Disney, maybe the Grand Canyon? And they went up in a small sight seeing plane together. First time on a plane for alot of them and a few got sick. They were all holding air sick bags. I don't think they flew because TLC wanted to film them loading up the bus, stopping along the way to do laundry and all the places they stopped at. A dude ranch, somewhere where they made food, they visited another family with like 15 kids, ect...

I think it is Matt the doctor was talking to when the surgery was mentioned. The first time I saw the preview I thought it was Zach too because he was shown immediately before that but it's Matt sitting there.

I'm all for regulation of children in reality shows. I think they need guardians and someone to oversee their financials.

Do the Duggar parents berate and demean each other on the show? No, because Jim Bob wouldn' allow it (he creeps me out big time)Which kid is the bratty one? Don't know because the show is edited so if a kid is being bratty it wouldn't fit in with the theme of the show so we would not see it. Would these kids sob and wail if the camera's went away tomorrow? Who can say, until we are told otherwise we don't know. Do they have a life w/o the show? Again, who knows because we see an edited show. Can the parents pay the bills if the show stops? Don't know since we don't know their financial situation..since he was a politician and ran campaigns I would say their is some money there and they do have outside income other than the show...would it be enough for them to live on now :confused3

That is your definition of exploitation.

Welcome back! :)

I was going to say the same thing...Some of the kids get airsick. They flew when they went to NYC...remember one of the kids got lost in the airport when they sent him to the bathroom by himself? So I think the roadtrip was so they seem more frugal and this was they go to film them doing he whole family thing.

Duggars are promoted as the total opposite of the J K 8 show...they have to make sure that whatever they film keeps up that appearance.

o.k.-now, am i the only one who noticed this or wonders about it?

table for 12 was supposed to be airing it's new season the last week of sept/first week of oct. but when the poop hits the fan that week with the gosselins and jon starts making nasty statements about tlc not caring about the best interests of the kids and there being issues with the contract and violations of child labor laws, all of a suddent *POOF* table for 12 is a no show. also telling is that the tlc website no longer shows an airing date for the new season and despite their message board mod's habit of answering poster's questions about air/new season release dates on their shows-2 separate threads asking when the show will return, despite hundreds upon hundreds of views have gone unanswered (not even a 'coming back soon, keep an eye out' blurb)

<snip>

got me wondering.

I may be mistaken, but I seem to remember a tweet from TLC_PR about Table for 12 returning. It might have been a different show they were talking about (Little People, maybe?) .. I'll have to check on that one.

The Duggars may be very thrifty, and most may like them, but they too, should be sharing the wealth with their children, and the money the kids are earning for them (because they too wouldn't be on TV if not for their children) should also be handled by someone other than them. I doubt they would be on a TV reality show if it wasn't for the $$$.

I agree.

We don't know what sort of set up they have for their children, though .. do we? I don't watch the show, so I don't know that it's ever been adressed.

What I do know is that Jim Bob Duggar is very financially savvy, and I would hope/expect/imagine that, at the very least, he's raising his sons to be the same way. The oldest son seems to be following in the same path.

If the Duggar's show stopped in the same abrupt fashion as JK8, I'm very certain their family would be fine from a financial standpoint. They were well off before they had their own show... they have very lucrative real estate investments.

They need the money that house would still be under construction at the rate Jim Bob was working if TLC did not step in & help this family. Did you see how they were living in the rental house it was gross.

I don't think it was a matter of money that they were living that way. I believe it was a conscious choice made by daddy Duggar to not put any money into the rental. The Duggars have been debt free and making a nice living off their investments for years.

The arrangement with Discovery was certainly a benefit, no doubt about that .. but that house would have been built, debt free, with or without their assistance.

Nothing happens quickly in PA:rotfl:The wheels of justice move very slow.

especially when you're talking about something that may stop the money from coming into the state. I wonder how much are the Gosselins worth to the state of PA, from a strictly financial point of view?

a sidenote about the Duggars. The earliest specials have a very different tone to them than what I've seen on the TLC show. They engage in parenting practices that people don't necessarily agree with, such as blanket training their children. The early shows also spoke of their church life, although I can't remember how much they delved into that. The Duggars have many endearing qualities, but live a lifestyle different than many of us.

Later specials, and subsequently the TV Show, showed a much more media-friendly version of the Duggars.
