So that was based on what Jodi and Kevin have to say? We can't take everything they have to say as gospel either.

I saw it in other items, but it was they who said the agreement would allow Jon to date other people. Seems far-fetched, even if it were coming from a better source.

And I still haven't made up my mind about how I feel about Jodi and Kevin saying anything at all to the press -- I think they're either out to get fame and fortune of their own, or they really mean what they say. It seems there couldn't be any in-between.

I was inspired by the Michael Jackson saga in the news today.

It was my understanding that he was supposed to be there with the kids whenever she was away, not just on the book tours. No employer was going to ok that.

I always got the impression that he quit his job, because the show was going to be his job. Taking care of the children when Kate's away was only part of it.

Can I just jump in this thread... I have not been following but I want to say some things and be open for feed back from those of you that have been following closer than I have....

1. Did they even try counseling?
2. Kate states that she does not want to be alone but it is like she is just letting it go, I mean if you still love your husband then you should at least put up a fihgt.
3. If Jon does not want to do the show then maybe Kate should say... what do I want more? My husband and family, or all the money I am getting from continuing the show.
4. How is the show going to go on if there is no more Jon and Kate.
5. Will Jon continue to do interviews?

That is all I have for now... can someone please fill me in

the honest answer is that we don't know. not really. We know whatever edited crap TLC shows us.

I guess the only thing we know is #4. Kate will be in some shows, Jon in others, and they'll be together rarely, if ever.

The show wasn't really a new episode though, just flashbacks. So the real telling will be what the August ratings end up being.

Yup -- lots of times -- there was a big kerfuffle when it was time to renew the contract and he didn't want to.

You heard Jon say that? I thought a poster said this season was year two of the contract they signed last year?

That being said, I don't know about US or Pennsylvania law, but here in NS, there would be nothing to keep a mother from signing a contract on behalf of her child without the authorization of the father if they're married ie. Kate could sign herself and her kids up for the show without Jon approving. What's the law there? Do both parents have to sign to register kids for school? to join a ball team?

I don't know what the law is in PA, but in NY,if a parent objected, it would null the contract. Even for something as simple as a baseball team.

Maybe he always wanted to be the person he is now -- he was pretty young when they got married. He does really seem like the pierced ears, tree-hugging, snowboarding type of dude.

He wandered all over Europe and has had several jobs..maybe this is who he is, and stopping to get married and have 8 kids was just an interlude.

And it was Kate that presented Jon with a separation agreement some time ago. He agreed to quit his job to help her with the kids while she is away, but wants to get another -- I don't see him not wanting to work. And we don't know that he never wanted to do counselling she is the only one who has said that. Heck! they could have already gone to counselling and we wouldn't know about it. I think that we shouldn't assume that just because Jon didn't go to the media to get his side of the story out, that everything Kate said was gospel.

The only people who mentioned any type of agreement was Kevin and Jodi. I see nothing to substantiate that. As for if they got any help, we may never know. Jon has had a few jobs, I have no idea why he left the last one..if he wanted to, if she wanted him too, if it was part of the agreement with TLC. But he did quit (assume he wasn't fired from this one) and he coudl have said no. I've watched from the begining and haven't a clue as to how that went down.
I have no doubt that Kate is hurt, like most people that are about to get divorced. We may never know what the reason was for her to file. It may be as simple as her lawyer told her too, or it may be that there were other circumstances. Or maybe Jon's lawyer wanted her too, so he held back. We may never know those answers.

Long story short, I just can't believe much of what is in the People article. It comes across as being very bitter (not that I blame her) and is very one-sided. Divorce is rarely ever the result of just one person's actions.

And it usually is in a divorce. Whoever is speaking is usually speaking of their hurt and why they feel there was a break down.

It's sad no matter whose fault it is, but I truly feel that they both have just not been respectful of each other and this is the result of that.

I would imagine that it will be like the rest of this year. (not just season 5)

dramatic episodes = higher ratings (season 4 finale, season 5 opener, last week's big announcement)
everyday episodes = boring

how long can TLC create drama for high ratings?

That made me LOL.

We may never know what the reason was for her to file. It may be as simple as her lawyer told her too, or it may be that there were other circumstances. Or maybe Jon's lawyer wanted her too, so he held back. We may never know those answers.

Apparently, the person who files gets to go first in court -- so there is a definite advantage. They get to present their side of things, the ex has to spend their time trying to show how they disagree with that.

Don't know where I read that, but it was an article where divorce attorney's were giving their opinions on strategy re. filing.

I'm still thinking about the statement she issued: “Over the course of this weekend, Jon’s activities have left me no choice but to file legal procedures in order to protect myself and our children.”

There must have been something big enough for her to do that. If I was Jon, I would be more ticked off about the statement than the filing (which he must have known would be coming)

Well I hope her and her sister are close. I am not sure though, I know if I had that sweet vaca. house for 11 days like Kate did when she was in NC. I surely could not have kept my sister away.

Kate has three sisters. Christen, Kendra and Clarissa. I don't think Kate and her sisters are close though. Several months ago, before all the marriage problems, I read a blog about her sister Christen, she is an artist that sells on the Etsy site. Someone said she wanted Kate to promote her stuff somehow, but it didn't work out, seems Kate refused. I'm sorry I can't remember all the details and I can't find the blog now, but I remember at the time going to Etsy and looking up the sister's sale page. Another sister is very religious and I think maybe a minister? Not sure, but something in the religion field.

Last night my TIVO recorded what was supposed to be "Jon & Kate Plus 8: Episode 5 (2009) - Chaos erupts as the family heads to Jon & Kate's favorite restaurant for a Mother's Day brunch; Kate needs to pack for a book trip."

What actually taped was an episode of "Cake Boss".

Did that Jon & Kate episode actually ever air? I thought I'd seen them all this season, but this one doesn't sound familar?

Kate has three sisters. Christen, Kendra and Clarissa. I don't think Kate and her sisters are close though. You are right. Christen Largent is a metal artist/jewelry designer. Isn't her stuff beautiful? Clairissa has a facebook page (she's still Kreider I think), Kendra Wilber is the one married to Jeff who helped paint the twins' new bedroom (rumor has it he and Jon got along well, but not he and Kate). I have never heard anything about Kate having a relationship with any of them, I hope she does. Charlene Kreider also has a facebook page, but I am not positive it is the same Charlene Kreider who is Kate's mother. Kate's mom is very young I've read, having had two of her five kids while in her teens. Both Kendra and Clairissa had blogs that have been removed.

Jon's brothers are easy to see pics of if your nosy like me. Tom is the head women's soccer coach at Mt. St. Mary's University. He is a good bit older than Jon (40 ish) and handles his male pattern baldness a little differently than Jonny! His bio at the school athletic site sounds as if he has quite a career as a soccer coach/teacher, and is good at what he does. Mark looks quite a bit younger than Jon, he has a facebook page, and lives nearby in Reading. They are cute guys. I have read on blogs that Kate doesn't get along with them (surprise, surprise) so Jon and the kids have seen very little of them. I hope that's not true. Is there anyone out there who claims her as a friend or even as pleasant? There has to be someone.

I like family dynamics and knowing who goes with who. I wish I knew more about J and K's nieces and nephews aside from Kevin's four kids.

I think it's more than that. As much as J&K have been featured in the news, in tabloids, and all over the internet in the last week, there should have been more interest than what they got. Also, TLC wasn't positioning it as a "repeat", but a "retrospective" and I think they had said that they'd include some previously un-aired footage. I think instead the numbers mark the first evidence of an audience backlash.

With things like this and Zondervan's announcement of a likely permanent hold on Kate's next book, I think that sound you hear is the brakes being applied to the Gravy Train. Next I think Kate's going to find that her personal appearance calendar will start opening up.

it already has. one appearance later this year was canceled. and I'm not sure that she has any other speaking engagements booked other than one in Orlando later this year.
