To the PP's who were worried because they weren't prepared to bring home the dogs. Yes, it's nice to be prepared, but I got my first dog on a total whim, had no idea about training, had a one year old baby and somehow we managed to survive. She was the best dog ever and we lost her the summer of 07 to a heart attack at age 16. :sad1:
A little different, I'd say. We're talking two potentialy dangerous dogs, eight young children, and inexperienced and uneducated owners here.

I agree. I think that people get way too over the top with having to know EVERYTHING under the sun about a dog, what to buy, having EVERYTHING, etc before getting a dog. In fact, it seems like people get way more intense about this than they do with people and kids. Like J & K said last night, they were less nervous about having kids than getting the dogs. Yes, it's a good idea to be prepared before getting the dog, having some knowledge, etc. Is it the end of the world if you don't? Depends on the dog I guess.
Yes, it certainly does. Make that dogs, with an S.

And the household. And the children. And your previous experience handling a difficult breed of dog.

People wing it every day. And dog bites occur every day. Then everyone screams about dangerous dogs, irresponsible pet owners, what were they thinking, etc. Unfortunately, someone often has to pay the price for this lack of preparation, and that usually winds up being the dog, but might also be the unsuspecting child or someone else visiting the home, or even the owners.

This family isn't like every other family, and these dogs aren't like any other dogs. A little preparation - no, make that a lot of preparation - given the circumstances, would have been the smart thing to do.

The breeder, who knows about these dogs, needs to be held responsible for this, too, then. He could have told them not to take the dogs, not sold them the dogs or offered to bring them the dogs once they, at least, had the necessary supplies.

I haven't seen the episode, nor do I know anything about dogs .. but I have a question.

What role, if any, will the cameras, lights, crew, etc. have on the puppies' behavior? Will they just eventually adjust?

I definitely see some Ikea-ish things at Target, but Target is usually more expensive.

It's a blast. The store is so much fun!!

I had my first Ikea experience this past December when a visiting friend took me there. Omg I LOVED IT, I haven't gone back yet, but I will!!

.

Well, I was inexperienced, young with a very young child, one on the way and the same kind of dog that J&K got. Yes, I had 7 less kids, but the kid I had was way younger than the tups, that should count for something. I just don't see it as such a horrible thing.

Has anyone seen the Radar video of Octomom and her mother? It's pretty sickening. I would much rather wonder about Kate's parents than see this mess.

It's not on the Radar Online site anymore, but I'm sure it's floating around out there somewhere.

I usually just lurk this thread. And look at Kate as a bit overbearing... but a woman with her hands full. I just couldnt get over the puppy episode though. It totally irritated me. Isnt the whole fun of kids gettign a family pet is the kiddos picking out the name? Yeah, you have to live with a crazy named animal, but those are your kids animals. That is the whole fun with a new family pet. I once had a cat named Hobo. My mom hated it, but now we laugh at it as one of those childhood memories of naming a pet. And now I have some wild pet names, but oh well. I think it was more or less the way she told the kids they wouldnt have a say in it that bothered me.
just my 2 cents...

Yes. I would have wanted to make sure everything was in order before my dogs went to their new home. I also would have helped them become more prepared and make sure this was the right thing for them to begin with. This is why I don't breed dogs.

So I just watched last night's episode.

I was a little bothered by the very end of the show when one of the twins said "I am going to count to three and everyone thank Mommy and Daddy for the puppies"!! Kate then says "Your father is not here" (why did she need to say that)....."One-two-three, thank you Mommy and Daddy for the puppies!" Kate then says "You're not welcome!" I thought how childish of her to say that...even if she thought it, she should just keep quiet. :headache:

I don't think the lights and such will bother them.

What I would be concerned about would be production people leaving doors open, playing rough with them, maybe feeding them half their lunch, LOL.

The dogs will adjust to the household however crazy it might be. In fact, they'll just love being a part of it.

My dog is almost 5yo. She's well adjusted at this point and we don't have to be too strict with her at all because she's got good habits. But these habits are a result of solid training early on.

When I first saw the previews of the puppies in the J&K+8 household, despite some concerns, I was actually kind of happy for the dogs. I just wish they handled it differently. Not only for themselves, but as a good example to their many viewers who may be thinking about doing the same thing.

We know that shelters are full of pets that aren't wanted, and many of those throwaways are a direct result of bad behavior. We also know that a breed's popularity increases when it's featured in popular movies and TV shows and bad things for the breed soon follow as a direct result. (As true of Rin Tin Tin as it is of Eddie, from Cheers; Lassie; Dalmations, etc.) Is it such a bad thing to want to see the people of a very popluar show set a really good example? :confused3

If the whole fun of getting a pet is to name it, then why get it? Just name a plant. And do you really think eight children could agree on two names? Not likely.

My son was able to buy a stuffed Penguin at a fair at school last year with "Good Behavior" credit. He named it Pecker. That was when I decided that children naming anything be it rear or fake animals was not a good idea. Mommy changed Pecker's name to Tux which is short for Tuxedo. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

and this is why I lurk.... Someone always has to pick apart what is said by someone.
Part of being a kid and getting a pet is the fun in coming up with a name for it. There are other ways that ALL 8 children could have had a say in naming THEIR puppies. Such as, I dont know, atleast getting input from the kids! Putting names into a hat. Many options. But to just look at the kids and say here it is... I dont think any child would have appreciated that. Whether they had 7 other siblings or not. She came across as a controlling witch in that situation.

The Pecker story..:lmao:

I just don't know why that bothers people so much? I never let my kids name the pets either and they love them just the same.

Omg....that is too funny!!! My DH has a friend that they call Pecker, lovely nick name.

Well we are very boring at my house....DH had a dog while growing up....he was allowed to name his dog and he choose "Puppy Dog". :dog:

I remember when my now 26yo DS got a cabbage patch doll in the very early '80's...he was probably 2.5...he named the doll "Dolly". AND just a few months ago DS got himself a kitten from the local rescue shelter...he named her..."Kitty". :cat:

Very very orginial names!!!

Oh, this isn't a discussion board? Oops, forget I engaged in a discussion.

My niece (mommy of Evil Baby and MR) has a puppy named Kitty. I think it's from a tv show.

If that was the Gosselin family dynamic, there wouldn't be a show for us to comment on, LOLOL ... it would be a whole different story.

I'm sorry... what?! (beginning to regret answering this post ... )

If you had eight whiny kids you wouldn't be willing to take them on an adventure like walking in the woods? What if you had eight non-whiny kids Then would you be willing?

Sorry...bad example (on my part) for what I was trying to say. I'm just saying that everyday things have GOT to be sooo much more difficult with eight little kids. And there ARE a lot of parents who would probably just skip out on doing things because of the pure insanity of it but J&K actually do try to do normal everyday things with the kids. I have to say I would TRY to do a walk in the woods if I had eight kids but I don't know if I would have made it as far as Jon did without turning around! But like they have said before, they are used to the noise so its pretty normal for them I guess.
BUT like you said, I don't know how much of this stuff is "staged" and how much time they really do spend with the kids. I assume that if they have a nanny on a regular basis she is more to help out then to actually stay by herself with the kids considering that Jon is home more now. At least that's what I hope.
The whole point I am trying to make is that even though Kate is working now, it doesn't necessarily mean that she is not spending a lot of quality time with the kids. Moms can work AND spend time with the kids.

Kate could have picked out a few acceptable names and let the kids vote on it. But Kate is Kate.

You're right...nothing Kate does is good enough for some people.

It seems like random strangers on the internet are WAY more obsessed over the dogs names than the kids were.

It's such a petty thing.....I really am having a hard time grasping all the drama over this...
