Various things at work pushing me over the edge. Had a job interview today. They offered me the position.

Pros:
Get out of a situation I currently hate.
$2 more an hour
Shift and amount of days I want
Sounds like more teamwork than at current job

Cons:
Leaving a place I have been at for 2 years and am "comfortable" with.
40 mile drive compared to 15 mile drive
We will be without insurance for 90 days.

How long will it take you to make the drive?

And can you get "bridge" health insurance till the other goes into effect - like COBRA? That's what I did with one of my jobs..

If the drive isn't horrendous and you can get the COBRA, I would take the new job..;)

Personally, the 40 mile commute would be the clincher for me. With today's gas prices, it may eat up the $2/hour more you're getting, although hopefully gas prices will eventually go down. I wouldn't worry about the "comfort" level...you'll get there in a new job. I also wouldn't be too concerned about the insurance. I'm not sure how long it is a person has to decide on taking COBRA, but when I left my last job for this one, I was told that I could decide to take COBRA after something happened if need be (as long as it was within that amount of time - 60 days if I remember right). Regardless, if the 40 mile drive is actually an hour or so commute, that would make me nuts. I'd probably pass until I found something closer to home.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Which one would make you happy? Drive aside, money aside, which one can you see yourself wanting to get up and go to every single day with a smile rather than a groan? I think that is what is the absolute most important thing personally. Good luck with your decision, I know it is tough to make a change like this!

It is a 45 minute drive for me.

Hmmmm..depending on where you live, winter weather might be a factor then.. That might shade my decision a bit.. I think the most I have ever driven to a job is about 30 minutes - although the nurse in the doctors office I used to work in drove 1 hour and 15 minutes a day and made it seem like a breeze!

With six kids, the INSURANCE issue would be the biggest issue to me...no way would I leave my kids uninsured for even one second. If you can get COBRA or some sort of bridge plan, then I would consider it.

The drive is definitely a drawback, but I've done worse. I assume your kids are in competent hands while you're at work and the child care would not be a problem even if you were delayed by traffic or weather?

If you can get past those two issues then I would most definitely go for the job that makes you happier. Life is too short to be spending most of your day doing something you don't like, or working with people you don't like.

Good luck to you. :)

Just guessing here, but COBRA for mom and 6 kids would be WAY expensive, wouldn't it? When I graduated college and wasn't on my dad's insurance anymore, I couldn't afford COBRA for the 3 months before I married my DH, and it was just for me! I just hoped for the best for that summer and was lucky!!

Good luck making your decision. Except for this, I'd say go with the new one, but I'd hate to have my kids uninsured. Is the 90 days because they have a waiting period? Can you ask them to waive it for everything except pre-existing conditions maybe? Surely they'd understand that noone wants their kids uninsured for 90 days....

Good luck in whatever you decide...new job or making the best at the old...

Having something happen to any of the kids while not being covered could be a financial disaster. I'm sure the COBRA payment would be high but it's essential, especially with a family and if you own a house.

If it was family coverage that she had through her job, the COBRA family premium would be no higher if she had one child or 15 kids. Obviously it will be more than what she was paying, but no coverage would definitely be a disaster in the making.. Murphy's Law says that's EXACTLY when everyone would get sick, injured, whatever..:(

Yes, I agree, as I put in my second paragraph. But, I'm wondering about your last statement "and if you own a house". How does that figure in here?

Well, it looks like I could get the kids covered through Michigan's Healthy Kids program.....a state insurance for kids with no coverage. So, that would just leave me and DH uninsured. Decisions....decisions.... I am dreading the thought of going into work tonight....maybe that should tell me something!

Is your husband able to pick up insurance with his job? I really think you need to make sure you and your husband have coverage too before you make a switch. If he can't get insurance through his employer or if he is self employed put something in place, take out the cobra policy. It is too risky in my opinion to be without health insurance.
If you hate your job and decide to take the other one just make up your mind to bite the bullet and know that paying extra for coverage is only for a few months.

Just to give you some $ to think about on that insurance decision, our DD's recent hospitalization was from Thursday morning to Monday afternoon. The hospital bill ALONE (no services, doctors, medicine, tests, etc.) was $17,000! I told my husband I couldn't imagine how anyone could pay this without insurance!

So if you can get insurance for the kids from the state, do that, then I'd strongly suggest you pay for the insurance for you and your husband.

No way can you not all be covered for any period of time, Kristy. So very important. And I do think most state plans are for those who can't get other coverage, elgibility is usually quite tough. Having you two not covered is playingwith a loaded gun. COBRA would be the option, or a Temp plan (though that would exclude pre-x's, COBRA would not) for the bridge.

My best in your decision process.

Kristy, to you at this difficult decision time. Good Luck with everything. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Two things, first of all insurance:
Make sure the kids would be covered with the state, most programs are based on family income for eligibility.
Second:
45 mile drive versus 15 mile, that alone will eat up your $2 an hour increase. At the present price with gas and the wear and tear in the car, I don't think it's worth it.
If I was comfortable in your job like you said you are , I would not change. That's just my opinion.
