I just got offered a great job and start in two weeks. (YEAH ME):cool1:

When do I ask for a week in Nov for my disney grand gathering? How do I ask them?:confused3

Any help would be great thanks.;)

You ask before you accept the job.

If it's a deal breaker on either side, it's best that everyone know now.

But if I were an employer, I would have a lot more trust in an employee who was truthful than one who, at the last minute, mentioned plans that had been in the works for months.

Good luck, and congrats!!

I agree w/ PP. Usually you let the employer know about vacation plans while you are still negotiating the deal.

Wow... a Mets and Yankee fan who see eye to eye. Stop the presses !!! :)

ASAP!!! My DH is currently interviewing for a position (3 interviews so far and now we're playing the waiting game) and he asked me this question (I work in HR). My response - if an offer is made and you are ready to accept it (he has the go ahead from me if he wants to) - accept first then ask. Make sure they know that the vacation would be nice (we do have airfare already paid for) but that the job is your priority. So....the sooner you bring it up the better - I would even suggest making a call before your start date or even better asking for a meeting before your start date to discuss it. For us the vacation is dispensable - the job isn't. (Oh....and from the discussions during the interview regarding project deadlines etc. I think we will have to cancel ours so I'm totally bummed - but if he doesn't find a job I have to cancel it too so...ya know)

LOL -- Wow-- I might have thought better of it! :rotfl2: J/K
DH & I were just at the Yankee/Mets game on May 17 -- hate to admit that the Mets won :(
....And we are both staying at the Poly!!

I think it's always best to be upfront about vacation plans when starting a new job. I started a new job 3 weeks before my wedding. I told them at the very first interview that I would be taking 2 weeks off and they were fine with it. Of course, this was 20 years ago but I don't think the rules have changed since then. It would be awful to tell them later and then find out someone else is already taking that time off and you can't because you don't have senority. It's best to make sure it's approved before you start the job.

Well its too late now but the correct answer is..................

BEFORE!!

Good Luck

Before you start....I am the office manager for a small law firm and recently had this situation come up. New hire already has plans for a Th & F off...a long weekend, and before she accepted the position, she told me about and asked if she could still take those days. I told her that she realized she would be taking the days without pay and it was no problem. Employers realize, or should, that when people change jobs that they may come with pre-planned vacations....if it's an issue with the employer when you tell them, then I might reconsider taking the job....

I just stated a new job last November the Monday after Thanksgiving and I had Disney planned for 2 weeks later. I told my boss during the offer but not during the interviews. He was fine...

I always thought it was the honest thing to tell them when they offer you the job, however I was job serching just before my wedding years ago, and I told my potential new boss that I would be taking a week for my honeymoon, (in Disney ofcourse!!) and he told me that he would not hire me now, and told me NOT to tell potential bosses untill AFTER I already had the job. I don't know, he seemed like kinda of jerk, but thats what he told me. However, on all my other interviews, I continued to tell people upfront and got a much better job!

I have to agree 100% here ::yes::. Usually employers have no problem accommodating a vacation IF it's brought to their attention from the beginning, rather than at the last minute. Employers are people too, and most of them understand that most vacations have to be planned and are willing to work with you on it:goodvibes. So I would tell them asap. Congrats on the job :).

Accept the job offer and then mention that you have a committitment during that week. they really shouldn't have a problem with it.

thank you all for the advice. I am scared to mention this to these people. I have not had a job in years and am unsure how to mention this on the phone. Not to mention I just got a court date for the 26th during training. They are going to love me.

It depends on the job and the dates.

To the OP: Do you know how vacations ae selected by the company? Our time off is selected by seniority and office policy limits the number of people off at one time. I actually mention this during the interview process. The applicant knows upfront that taking off during high vacation times (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc.) are most likely not available.

He was currently looking for a new job and I had started planning our annual Red Sea beach week at the same time. I already made hotel reservations and my travel agent was looking for cheap charter flights from Frankfurt to Cairo. DH gets the job offer and turns it down the first time, they come back with a better deal and he accepts but then informs them that he will need a week off at the end of May to go on holiday. His new employer told him that was not an option as his job requires travel and he would be expected to begin rotations as soon as he was trained. They could not say where he would be in May and three training days later he was notified that he will be going to Abu Dhabi for 3 months and then on to Qatar, Saudi and finishing up in Spain. He works for a large newspaper and is responsible for graphics and production. They are having a hard time finding folks to work in these remote places for the crappy pay, that they pay. So someone in upper management decided it would be cheaper to take the few staff you do have and just have a rotating schedule. He leaves on sunday for the UAE and at least he will get to go to beach!! he will be back sometime in the fall....
