Joanne and Paul's VR - 4th May 2011

So I'm curious Joanne, what do you make for Christmas for dinner. I'm always excited to learn what other countries do.

Don't worry, your not the only late person for Christmas. I put my Christmas cards in the mail this morning and I just started wrapping presents yesterday to mail up to NY to my family.

Hi Chrissy sweetheart
Traditionally we have turkey or goose, but as I am not a lover of turkey my family has beef as well!! We have roast potatoes, veg ( brussel sprouts are particularly traditional), pigs in blankets, stuffing and gravy. All families have their own particular favourites to go with Christmas dinner.
We have Christmas pudding (do you have that in the States?) with brandy butter, cream or custard for dessert.
Most families veg out after lunch and some watch the Queen's speech. We try to fit in a walk to work off the enormous lunch!!! Evenings are typically spent playing games or watching a favourite film or TV programme. How about you guys?

I didn't forget to answer you Joanne, I was up in NY visiting my Mom and family for a week so I was unable to respond. Sheesh, I think next time I go up for a visit I am going to have make it 2 weeks instead of one. I just can't seem to squeeze in visits to everyone. :)

I think the answer would be very diversified here for the States as what is typically eaten/activities since we have so many different cultures here. My upbringing was Spanish (I'm from Puerto Rico) so we'll have a roasted pork shoulder, rice & beans, and something called pasteles. Its like a tamale but made with green bananas, wrapped in a banana leaf & parchment paper and then boiled.

I think a lot of families like to watch the Yule Log on TV. It's meant to make your TV look like a fireplace because it has a log burning. They play Christmas music while the log burns. My family never really did this but I do know many other families that did this as a tradition.

That Christmas pudding sounds yummy. You should share the recipe - perhaps I'll give it a try this year. I love baking.

Hi Joanne,

Sorry i've been AWOL again. All the Christmas planning has taken over my DIS time!

Anyway, just heard that there was an earthquake in Cumbria overnight. Hope you are ok and weren't affected by it xxxxx:hug:

I love reading this whole thread. I don't have the same story as you, but, I also have a story if you will bare with me.

When I was 17, I thought I met the man of my dreams - I ended up getting pregnant. We got married and we had a baby girl in July. He took off just before I delivered and it was just my mom and I in the delivery room. He eventually came back and we got an apartment together. I left for work one night and our newborn was sitting in the swing. We did not have 2 nickles to scrape together but I left money to get diapers. When I got home 8 hours later, she was sitting in her swing where I had left her, soaking wet, him fast asleep with an empty 6 pack next to him. I called my mother to come get us and I left him.

I moved into my parents house and enrolled in college. I traveled on 2 buses each way with my young daughter each day to go to school. It was a little rough - back then my Dad worked for the steel plant and they closed. We made due. I placed an ad in the paper and people donated baby furniture and clothing.

When my daughter was 4, I joined a church and was getting a bit lonely and was wondering if I would ever meet anyone who would want to marry someone who had a child. When she was 5, I met my husband, who was also a single father with a young daughter a year older than mine. It must have been fate - he asked me to marry him after only 5 days.

Our wedding was simple - our minister picked the date. My dress cost $40. He wore a suit he had. A friend played music. Another friend made our cake. Our rings cost $14 and $25. My mother-in-law (whom I a had not met yet) sent 2 dresses for our girls. Our flowers cost $20. We went home and danced in our living room and I started my new job the next day. We lived close to Niagara Falls so we went there for the day and then came home beause we could not afford to stay there. Then we did it again the next day.

We struggled financially and lived pay check to pay check. Years later, I went to nursing school and then when I graduated, my husband went to college full time.

I always dreamed of having a nice wedding and we were going to renew our vows on our 20th anniversary, but, my mother-in-law became gravely ill and we put it off. We went to a nice restaurant and exchanged rings.

We celebrated our 25th in October. We renewed our vows on a Celebrity Cruise. It was only the 2 of us. Wished our girls could have been there. Our oldest just delivered our first grandson in July and was on maternity leave. Our youngest lives up in Maine and has a great summer job she could not leave.

I ordered a tea length dress and then saw a long gown at Nordstrom that was beautiful. My shoes had pearls on them. I wore diamond earrings. My DH wore his first tux. We had a beautiful cake and a professional photographer. It was truly a beautiful day and I felt like a bride.

Best of luck. I will keep looking at your thread. Looking forward to more pictures and updates. There are pictures on Kodak Gallery page 4.

Sorry I have been AWOL lately!! I worked quite a bit over Christmas and am now planning how we will see in 2011. Emily (DD) will be with us for the New Year, as she couldn't make it for Christmas due to work commitments. Henry's (DS) girlfriend has also joined us in Cumbria, and so we will be having a small mini Christmas on New Year's day. There are still some gifts to exchange and I will cook a roast beef dinner. My parents will join us for the evening.
My sweet Chrissy - Thank you so much for the Christmas greetings!! I hope you had a lovely time over Christmas and a very happy 2011 to you and yours!! Much love to you sweetie!!
It is an interesting concept that some people watch a fireplace simulation on the TV!! We have two open fireplaces in the cottage (one in the lounge and one in the dining room) and they are both lit every evening in the winter!! It really is lovely to sit by the fire when it is cold outside!!
Claire sweetie - Glad you are well!! We did have a minor earthquake in Cumbria, but I felt nothing!! I must have slept through the whole event!! I think I have noticed a few fresh cracks in the plasterwork of the cottage walls though. It is difficult to be certain in a 300 year old cottage which has so many cracks and uneven walls anyway. Much love and a happy 2011 (wedding year) to you.
aml3679 - What a great story!! I am so happy that, like me, you have now found somebody worthy of your love. I wish you a lifetime of happiness!! It is great you are reading along. I hope to have some more interesting updates to report soon!!

I too went AWOL due to the holidays this year. Your plans keep coming along...so that means I am even further behind. Wishing you a Happy New Year.

Happy New Year Joanne (and everyone)!

Love the pictures of the snow. We had a dusting the day after Christmas (had a few flakes fall on Christmas day - but nothing that stuck.

Happy new year! I miss the snow, we don't get any down here in FL. I grew up in Boston so it doesn't really feel like winter without the snow!

I am also doing a VR @ the S/D and was wondering how far in advance did they allow you to book? My wedding planner tried to book for me today and it is still 14 mos out and they said it was too soon. They did mention that we could book west courtyard (but we're wanting crescent terrace for the extra space) at this time though...strange. Just wondering how much in advance you were allowed to book so I know what to expect!

Hi there!
I love the logos and all the pictures you have made for the welcome bags. What did you use to design them? Thanks!:donald:

Jilian - Hi sweetie and a very happy 2011 to you. I seem to have been planning the VR forever, but looking back on my records, we only booked and paid the deposit on 21st July last year, so that is just under 10 months before our VR. I was in contact with Karen, getting advice and ideas, well before this though!! As you know, we are using the West Courtyard. We considered the Terrace, but with only 13 guests, I felt that the Courtyard, with it's gorgeous fountain, would be a more intimate setting for us. So, I guess, that the short answer is that I am not sure how long out you can book the Terrace. I wish I could help!! I will say that I trust JM 100%, so if they say that the S/D will not book this far out, it's probably true. I know it is so hard to be patient, when all you want to do is get the ball rolling!!! I think if you were having a DFTW you would still be unable to book this early. I would let my planner know of my firm interest in the date though. That way, as soon as the window opens up, she can book it for you quickly!!!

Nelman - Hi and welcome. Thank you for the lovely comments about the things I have designed. I am really a complete dabbler at this. I used to dabble a bit over on the 'Creative Dissigns' board and have taught myself how to do it. I have no specialist prgrammes or equipment. I harbour a dream to one day own photoshop and a cricut, but that's on the backburner whilst we pay for the VR and associated events!!! I use powerpoint and a programme which I must have downloaded for free (I can't remember when, but I certainly didn't pay for it) called VCW VicMan's photo editor. I am sorry I cannot be of any more help. If I can help with designing a logo for you, just let me know - I'd be honoured to help!!

Okay here (as promised a long time ago ) is a picture of the hanger from the brilliant Etsy seller. It actually looks a lot better in real life as in the picture, it looks a bit bent in the middle, and it doesn't at all in person!! Please excuse the garish red background!! DD took the photo- heaven knows what she was thinking !!

Also I have been re-thinking the favours for the ladies. I am still running with the little bangles for the two younger ladies (DD and friend's 14 year old daughter), but thought these would be better for the ladies around my age (so quite young really, uh hum!!!)

I don't like the silver disc thing at the end of the bracelet, so I will replace that with a little initial charm. I have ordered one for myself too, so I now have both a bangle and a bracelet!! Since rethinking my headband, and making it into a bracelet (see previous posts for whole boring story!), I have decided to wear the bracelet and bangle to the ladies afternoon tea and/or morning after breakfast.
For my Mum and Paul's Mum, I have bought little crystal perfume bottles, as I really can't see either of these ladies (both in their seventies) wearing Mickey jewellery. I don't really understand why, as I am sure I will still be honouring the Mouse with my jewellery when I am in my seventies!!!

Thanks Claire sweetie!! I think you must have posted whilst I was editing the post to include the ladies favour re-think!!!
How are your plans going?

Just caught up on everything I've missed! You've got so much done! It's all really coming together! All your plans are so great it's all going to be so fab! :goodvibes I love that you're doing a TTD session! I would love to do one over there too but as we have an at home reception May 7th that I'm planning on wearing my dress to I cant really do it :sad2: Maybe I'll look at doing one at home!

I love the hanger; it will look so beautiful with your dress hanging on it! The bracelets are really nice too, I like how the mickeys are subtle so it can be worn everyday. Thanks for the info on the Swan/Dolphin; West courtyard is so beautiful. I can't wait to see how the pictures come out. If for any reason our guest count drops we plan on trying to move to the courtyard too.
