We booked extra leg room seats for our January 2014 trip. DS will be 2 1/2. I'm thinking I will board first with our carry-ons and set up the Cares Harness for DS. Then DH can board a little later so DS isn't so restless before takeoff. Has anyone done this? How does it work for you?

I have never heard of parties separating like that, but it sounds like a terrific idea. Anything to prolong a 2 yr old being confined is alright in my book and to get onboard to set him up sounds great too, I don't see anything wrong with it:thumbsup2.

We do it all the time. Need extra time to set up the carseat (never used CARES), but no need to the little ones to spend longer on the plane than necessary.

This used to be common practice when flying with little ones. It was always a good idea to hang at the gate for as long as possible, allowing the kids to use the bathrooms, and move around to get as much excess energy out of their systems as possible.
Now? Everyone just HAS to be first to board!! Then, we see many kids getting restless very early in the flight! I understand the need when flying SW, but if you have seat assignments, then I'm not sure why the huge hurry to board with little kids.
So, yes, that's a terrific idea. You can board as soon as you are called, get the car seat installed and stow any carryon bags. Then, you dh can board later in the process with your DS. Great way to travel!

This is what we used to do as well. DH would board and install the carseats and then I'd board toward the end with the kids.

This is why I love these boards, always give me a better strategy to easier travelling! We are going for the first time to Vegas this summer and Disney next summer and travelling with a 3 yo autistic child we could use all the help we can get. This is a great idea, I can board first, set up the CARES harness and let my daughter board after with my DGS. Why didn't I think of that:confused3 Thanks so much for such valuable info. Gotta love these boards! :thumbsup2

The only issue I can see is with the carry-ons. I think you will have to clear it with the gate agent so you can carry on more than your allotment.

I do think it is smart to take them with you so you will have a shot at the overhead compartments.
