Has anyone heard anything about Jet America since they cancelled flights through Aug 14th? We have $9 fares on the 20th and although I'm not counting on it, is there any hope?

Buy a lotto ticket, your chances will be much better.

Whatever small, tiny, shot Jet America had vanished when the price of crude oil went up.

Do you really think they can be profitable with $9 fares? Even with the extra fees? Do you think anyone in their right mind will pay a high enough fare to offset the money lost from the selling fares below cost?

I can dream, can't I??:cloud9:

Certainly you can dream. Unfortunately, it may turn into a nightmare for you because if your $9 flights DON'T materialize, it may cost you a LOT more $$ for tickets on another airline at this late date OR a LOT more in time to drive.

The concern isn't just the problem of cancelling a vacation, or deciding to drive, if JetAmerica cancel your outgoing flight. A bigger question is what you'll do if JetAmerica stops flying while you're on your vacation.

Most travel insurance polices don't cover carrier default and even fewer (if any) will cover an airline like JetAmerica.

It's possible, but not guaranteed, some airlines might offer to fly you at a discounted fare. That fare would be a lot higher then $9.

A dream would be JetAmerica going out of business after your family flies home. A nightmare would be JetAmerica going out of business after your arrive in Florida.

I recently saw a documentary on TV where all the costs of a LAX-JFK flight were added up and and compared it to the revenue from the flight. The net profit was $200! And that was with American Airlines charging regular fares. I honestly don't see how some of these low fare outfits can survive.:)

But hope springs eternal on the DIS!

I figure if it costs me MORE to drive to the airport, that's a bad sign.

OKAY, OKAY.....I know it is a pipe dream and may never materialize.....I KNOW THAT!!
I am just curious if anyone has heard anything from JetAmerica since they cancelled their flights.:confused3

If they don't fly, we don't go. There is just no way to afford it right now.

All JetAmerica would be is a scheduled charter flight. They do not (will not???) have their own planes. They would be using "Miami Air" 737s for their flights. It's technically not even an airline...just a charter.

Which brings up a whole new can of worms... LOL!

Basically anytime a charter cancels a flight for ANY reason, the ONLY thing they have to do is give you your $9 (or whatever) back. So if they decide "we didn't sell enough seats on the Wed flight from Melbourne to Toledo" then they just cancel, give refunds and they are done. (You however are now stuck in Melbourne) Same thing for weather, mechanical etc. And with the small number of planes most of them fly... it's a risk.

Cruide oil has only been going down, and is now expected to reach record lows in a few months. And, besides, since JetAmerica is a charter operation, and not an airline, the price of oil is irrelevant. JetAmerica isn't fueling planes.

That being said, JetAmerica will never launch.

The price of jet fuel has been going up over the last 6 months. The price of oil is relevant, fuel surcharges are typically imposed on everything but US passenger airfares. It is likely the cost JetAmerica would have had to pay to charter flights included a fuel surcharge based on the cost of jet fuel as of the date of the flight.

You're probably right. I don't think JetAmerica would have launched even if the price of jet fuel had been flat this year. I doubt any passengers were willing to book JetAmerica at anything but deeply discounted, money losing fares.

edited to add I'm not attacking anyone who booked JetAmerica. Many of us occasionally buy lotto tickets. I might have been tempted to book JetAmerica for an extra trip if they serviced an airport near my home. I wouldn't have booked them for a cruise or a "major" vacation--too much risk. Sometimes at least some passengers get a cheap trip. Some passengers were able to fly Skybus before they became Skybust.
