This story was just on our local news. He grabbed beer as he exited - really?:rotfl2: Seems a bit wacky to me. He cursed out the plane on the planes public address system before exiting.

Jet Blue flight attendant at Kennedy Airport Monday afternoon activated an emergency slide after a confrontation with a passenger on a plane, grabbed cans of beer from the aircraft's galley and slid down the chute before taking off in his car, officials said.

Steven Slater, 39, ran into the airport terminal and then drove to his home in Belle Harbor, Queens, officials said, where Port Authority Police detectives later arrested him. He's being held at JFK pending arraignment on charges of reckless endangerment and criminal mischief, police said.

The incident occurred after JetBlue Flight 1052 from Pittsburgh landed at Kennedy and taxied to a stop at Terminal 5, officials said.

According to a law enforcement official, Slater became upset after a passenger accessed the overhead luggage bins while the plane was taxiing to the gate, after being given repeated orders to sit down. The passenger hit Slater in the head with his luggage, and when the passenger refused to apologize, Slater used the plane's public address system to curse at everyone on the plane, the official said.

He then made his dramatic exit through the service door at the front right side of the aircraft - with beer from the galley in tow - and headed to his vehicle in an employee parking lot, the official said.

According to the official, who requested anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, JetBlue waited more than 25 minutes before contacting the Port Authority about the incident, which gave Slater a "head start in evading authorities."

In a statement, JetBlue said there were no injuries in the incident and that all customers deplaned safely through the jetway. The airline declined to comment on how long it took to inform police.

"At this time, we are working with the FAA and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to investigate the incident. At no time was the security or safety of our customers or crew members at risk."

The FAA said it had been notified about the incident, but deferred comment to JetBlue and the Port Authority.

Calls to relatives of Slater went unanswered Monday afternoon.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Slater has been with JetBlue since 2008. He is the chairman of the airline's Uniform Redesign Committee and a member of the Inflight Values Committee. According to Slater's MySpace profile, he has been a flight attendant since 1990.

Well, I'm sure this isn't going to be popular, but I'm on the side of the flight attendant. They have so much stuff to put up with.

Why can't I be on flights like this? Hilarious!! :rotfl: That's one helluva YAGE

I would be ticked too if a passenger hit me in the head with their luggage. However, grabbing the PA system and cursing out the plane, grabbing beer, and making a grand exit using the slide is a bit dramatic. Would have been entertaining to witness though!

DH would say yet another reason not to fly in or out of JFK

wow... i guess he couldn't take anymore....I feel bad for him.....
Thank goodness he did not hurt anyone when he snapped...

I hope they go after the passenger for assault and not obeying the instructions of a flight attendant. It does not excuse the FA's actions, though.

Yes, I prefer Newark, myself.

Try pricing flights though- makes JFK look a little more appealing.

I say if you are going to quit do it up right. Sounds like he made a big exit.

As a flight attendant myself, I must say, this man is officially my hero today!

We've ALL, in our minds, thought of and have dreamed of doing the same thing.

I love the added touch of the beer!

Not for me. I live on the west side of Manhattan, right near the Port Authority bus terminal. I can walk there and take the direct shuttle bus to Newark for $16 each way. Takes 45 minutes.

For me to get to get to JFK, I have to leave at least 1 1/2 hours traveling there, as a cushion, and the taxi costs $55 each way. :headache: That extra $100 evens things out for me. There generally are more choices of flights at JFK though.

I think I love him!

Why wasn't the passenger charged with hitting a flight attendant?

There are days at work lately that I would love to do the SAME thing! Yes he probably broke some laws, but at least he didn't hurt anyone.

No I totally agree with you. They take a lot of crap, and well, sometimes you get to that point where you have just had enough! I think this guy gets the "Best Quit Ever" award!
