Jessa Duggar (of the Duggar Family) is courting

Except the Duggar men do not wear whatever they want, they also maintain their idea of modesty. You will never see a duggar man swimming with no shirt.

Once a water park I saw a family of a certain background, the man and boys were wearing normal swim trunks, no shirts, and the woman was covered literally head to wrist to ankle. That is hypocrisy in my book.

Sent from me.

The Duggar men are allowed to wear clothing that allow them to blend in with the rest of society. The clothing that the women wore was very dowdy (until a few years ago when they started wearing more fashionable clothing), while the men wore jeans and other clothing that didn't make them look any different than any other men. Josh has also been shown wearing long shorts recently in one of his Instagram photos. I think that's great. Hopefully the clothing restrictions will ease for Anna too.

Of course it doesn't have anything to do with him, but he can still have an opinion, just as you do.

True he can choose to be offended by whatever he likes. Lol, everyone chooses their level of comfortable. To be offended by someone not wearing a swimsuit would be like someone being offended by you not running around topless. (Assuming you don't!;) silly. But their right, none the less

Well I think that's more indicative of a problem with society that male modest clothing "blends in" more than female modest clothing. As for wearing dowdy-looking clothing, that has little to do with modesty. Modest clothing can also look stylish. Not that I'm a fashionista or anything, but I think I manage to dress myself and my daughter modestly without looking matronly.

However at the beach or pool my husband certainly doesn't blend in in his "mankini" (what we call his swim trunks and shirt)!

Wow, this has been an interesting discussion.

Personally I like the Duggars. I think they are raising some mighty fine children in a world that is so pc you can hardly say anything to anyone or form an opinion without stepping on someone's toes.

I think people are afraid to voice their opinions/beliefs because everyone is so touchy now. We are supposed to accept everyone and their belief system, regardless of our own. Think about it, how can that be? It can't. There's no way that can be true. Every one of us has a system or standard we live by and measure others by.

All of that said, I think Jessa has grown into a gorgeous young woman. If she wants to go through her parents to court this guy and she's fine with it, then so be it. I do find it odd but on the other hand it is nice to see parents involved rather than just throw their kid out into the world and hope they bring someone like minded home!

I'd also like to say that we are only seeing a snippet of their lives on tv. I'm sure there's much more that goes on. I have a hard time believing that all of their kids are trapped and miserable. They seem happy, well adjusted, compassionate and stable.

You can dress modestly without wearing ankle length skirts. The Duggar girls do not wear pants. They even made themselves special long skirts to wear when they were volunteer first responders.

That's the thing. None of these shows that follow around families or professionals are accurate portrayals of their lives. Not really. These shows are closer to parodies or caricatures of the families or people they are focused on. They highlight extremes that rarely happen and ignore the mundane everyday dealings they have that happen all the time because it is just boring. The people in the shows purposely exaggerate behavior that will cause a reaction. This thread only shows that it is working and on both sides of the love/hate relationship.

The day people like the Duggars elicit any strong emotional response from me is the day I know I need to reevaluate my life. I don't know them, will almost certainly never cross paths with them, and wouldn't know one of them if I tripped over them in the street.

Whatever they are happy in. I don't wear mini skirts because I am not comfortable in them. Not because I don't still have hot legs, but because showing them of has never been my comfort zone. I also didn't wear string bikinis. Everyone should choose to wear whatever is within their comfort zone and the law. Because some nudist friends would push that one, lol. It has nothing to do with anyone but he person making the choice as to how they personally feel modest, or sexy, or ugly, or attractive.

I lived through the long skirts of the 70's. they never hurt anyone. :) and blue jeans at the beach. (Because they were style not for religious or personal reasons)

I don't disagree that modest varies. Kind of my point. My daughter was modest in a two piece.

If "accepting" everyone's belief system means not discriminating against them, then yes we can "accept" everyone's belief system. We don't have to agree with it, or like it, to not pass laws discriminating against people because of their belief system.

As to the "PC" thing, there seems to be many people offended that there is criticism against the Duggar's and outrage that all conservative Christians are being bashed. If we're not supposed to care about other people's feelings then all the offended conservative Christians on this thread should stop being offended by people criticizing the characters in the Duggar reality show.

Accepting the belief systems is one thing. Advocating for the suspension or denial of rights for another group is another. So I can't "accept"Josh's belief system that the lgbt group should be discriminated against.

I'm all for accepting the superficial, personal, spiritual choices of others though. It has no bearing on my life. Lol luckily.

I think it would be an interesting case study to find out what various people in the United States consider to be modest clothing. I would love to then put that up against the opinions on modest clothing from people 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 years ago. It would be interesting too see how opinions have or have not changed.

If you wore that long skirt from the 70's today you would stand out. That's the point the poster made -- the Duggar girls stand out in a crowd but the men blend in.

I saw a family once at WDW, on a sweltering Orlando summer day, where the mom and 4 girls all were wearing long denim skirts and long sleeve shirts with Disney t-shirts over the long sleeve shirts. Dad wore chinos and a short-sleeved polo shirt. The girls were all around age 13 and younger. What kind of oppressive religion would not let a young girl display her forearms?

And yes, when I see the women in the hot florida sun wearing burkas I do cringe. I would not however, advocating passing a law/constitutional amendment to prevent them from dressing as they see fit.

It would be interesting:). Year ago...30ish? There was a film shown in sociology classes called "what you are now is what you were then". Based on the decade one was born in and their first decade was a far bigger indication of their belief systems then most wanted to believe.

I have several ankle-length skirts and maxi dresses. I do also wear jeans and knee-length skirts, but I do not think I stand out on days I choose to wear a long skirt.

The tops do not sound comfortable to me at all, but long skirts can be quite cool. In fact my typical summer-wear (including at disney) is a skirt (knee or ankle length) just because they are so much cooler than jeans and capris (I do not wear shorts).

Young girls wearing long skirts, especially along side their brothers wearing jeans, would stand out. It's just not the norm.

Well, I will concede to that part. I wear suits to work everyday and I much prefer skirts to pants being a Floridian. They are cooler. But I've never worn an ankle length skirt so I can't compare.

Well I do, including at Disney (and I live in Orlando so it's always hot!), So i guess i stick out and never even noticed. My DD also wears long skirts, although none of her's are denim. Boys in our family wear pants or knee-length shorts. But we're ok with not being "the norm," in more ways than just how we dress.

I live outside of Austin and, for full disclosure, their town slogan is "Keep Austin Weird." That said, walking down the street or going to any kind of festival here will have you encountering all sorts of different looks. There will be people who look like they just transported here from Woodstock all the way to people who look like they just stepped off of Rodeo Drive. It's really common to see the long skirts here, denim or otherwise. Of course, it's also common to see shorts with the booty hanging out the back, as well. :confused3

Maxi dresses are all over the place anymore. Heck if people wear them here in 90 degree and 200 prescient humidity they must be ok. :)

I just believe that modesty is a personal thing. Sometimes it wins out over total comfort. Work attire vs tank top and shorts. Lol, thinking about the temps here is summer.
