Jersey girls don't pump gas

Wow! I come back home to discover I have no credit and little in the bank because I pay cash for my gasoline! Won't my husband be surprised!

Around here we do pull in face to face for gas. It can be crazy at times. Also, many of our pumps are old. And lastly, many, many stations are old and don't have the huge overhang that newer stations do. In many places there's actually no room for them. This here is one conjested state.

Hi, Mare! Hi, JJ! Nice Jersey girls! And JB! How lovely!

Yep, I'm a spoiled brat and prima donna. I don't pump gas and don't want to learn how to. Nevermind that I can drivekamekaze style in Manhatten, paint rooms, drag my child from pillar to post and earn a living. Boy, will my husband howl at the thought of ME being a prima donna.

His comment is that he abhors pumping gas. Poor guy....he's a diva and didn't know it!

Oh, Bella babe, the reason I don't use a cc at a gas station is because I don't believe in charging useables or consumables that disappear before I get the bill. It has nothing to do with ccs or the lack thereof.

Don't you ever use a credit card when going out to dinner, you have to hand over your card. .

Recently we ate at a quaint cafe' and the waiter brought a hand held swiper to the table-so that the card never left our hand!:thumbsup2

When you order online, your numbers are immediately encripted.

We threw away all our gas credit cards.

We have a special CC from Chase that gives a % cash back for every gas purchase. That is the CC we use for gas-and only gas.

Dh gets mileage $$for work-which covers his gas and car note etc-so the gas bill is hefty-but paid off every month from his expense check.

:)

Your state is confusing.
The rest of the United States is so used to pumping our own gas.
Anyway, what is the correct procedure, do you pay before the attendant puts gas into your vehicle?
Or does he collect after the gas is put in.
Most times I use my gas card to get gas, does the attendant do this for you too?
What happens if you want to make a purchase in the store.
Sorry, but the protocol was so confusing when I stopped for gas. The attendant looked at me like I was trying to rob him or something. Neither of us knew what the other was doing.

Ditto. DH and I recently went to Niagara falls and back and there were quite a few places where we could ONLY find full service stations and it is maddening. I just wanna pump my own gas thank you very much!

Gina, why not use a debit card to pay for gas and consumables then? We very, very rarely carry cash around here. There aren't any atms from my bank, and even though they give back a certain percentage of atm fees, it's just not worth the hassle. My bank does not charge for using a check card as debit or as credit. We use it everyday and have never had problems.

On the pumping your own gas.. it doesn't bother me one bit. I've done it since I was a kid. If it's snowing, I put a coat on. I don't wear skirts and heels in the snow/ice, IMO that's just stupid. If you have to wear it for work, just get changed at work. What are you going to do if your car breaks down and you have to walk to get help? Cell phones don't always work.

FWIW, we don't have ANY credit cards. Just our debit cards. We don't even have store cards.

If you are not from New Jersey or Oregon, do you wish you had this law or do you think that it's just nuts to not want to pump your own gas?

I can't stand the law. It's so ridiculous. It's a way to keep some people employed. Drives me bananas when we visit Portland and I have to physically keep myself waiting (and waiting and waiting) in the car when I could have filled the tank 3 times (OK, 2 times with our current car...big tank) by the time they notice me. We avoid filling up in OR as much as we can. Wasn't a choice when we went to our friend's wedding in NJ, had to fill up. Hubby was surprised there was another state out there silly enough to have this law!

I'm appalled that women's groups got up in arms about this. And that from a SAHM!

But by the way, there are still full serve stations. They aren't everywhere, but I can think of one right off the bat near here. So if you WANT that service, you can get it. And it's actually FULL service, not just pumping gas.

I rarely use a debit card because I don't want hassles with mistakes. If I use credit cards, I can dispute a charge. If I use debit and I need to dispute a charge, I'm still out the money til the bank redeposits it. It's just a personal picadillo.

Ah, ok that makes sense :)

Our banks are really good about that kind of thing, I think it's because they're military banks so they know that a lot of people aren't terribly careful with money. I check my bank statement online every night so I can catch any potential mistakes.. and just earlier this month I caught that the hotel we stayed in overcharged us by 150 dollars! I called USAA and they had it resolved in about 2 days.

Wow I live here and didn't know of the proposal! But then again I live in the sticks by the bay. When I need gas I pull in - give my cash/card - get my gas and go. If I am filling up the boat or cycle they hand it to me and I do my thing. No biggie. I have been up and down the east coast and it doesn't matter to me - either way I still have to gas up - whether they do it or I do it - it has to get done. Heels, skirts, boots, waders, kids in seats or kids in the boat handing me the gas cans - the end result is the same...

I can't believe this topic has created such a cosmic poo storm... it's funny though. :rotfl2:

The thing about having someone else pump gas for me that wigs me out is HANDING OVER MY CREDIT CARD. You really trust the attendant to not copy the number? I don't.
Don't you do this whenever you go to a store or a restaurant. Esp. a restaurant the card leaves your hand and your site.

I also wonder if anybody on this thread has read any of Janet Evanovich's books. They are filled with Jersey girl references. They show a dichotomy between being a bounty hunter with a gun and also being a girly girl. We in NJ like to make fun of our state.

Was that your first time dining out and using a credit card?

This is what I am wondering also -

My coworkers and I were talking about the election last month. Our current governor lost. I am from New Jersey.

I am a Democrat, but admitted that I didn't vote for him... When I told my two male coworkers that "he lost my vote the day he proposed I should pump my own gasoline." My two male coworkers thought I was nuts.

In New Jersey, there is a sign on every gas pump that states it is unlawful for patrons to pump their own gas. (only New Jersey and Oregon have this law) New Jersey has had consistantly amongst the lowest prices for gas in the country despite full service only. The governor proposed that I would save $.06/gallon or $.60 per week pumping my own . (yeah, right) This in a state where property taxes average 6000k for a modest detached home.

If I want to save $.60 , I'll clip coupons. Gas is nasty, stinky stuff. He proposed that I get out of my car, leaving my children in their car seats, possibly dressed in heels, stocking and a dress in 10 degree weather. Yeah , right.

I am not the only New Jersyean who feels this way. No other issue received such a pubic outcry as this. Woman's groups, and groups for the elderly and disabled came out against Corzine's proposal to change to self service at gas stations.

If you are from New Jersey or Oregon, do you like the law?

LOL! I'm from NJ. When we moved to FL there was no way I was pumping gas. :teeth: Within a short time I had to do it. It wasn't pleasant, but I got used to it. Still not fond of it though.

American cars have the gas cap on both the right and left sides (our two cars have one on each side). Unless yours is in the front or back, it isn't different than an "American" car. ;)

::yes:: I rent cars all the time. When ever I pull into a station. I have to jump out of the car to see which side the gas cap is on, so I know which side of the pump to pull up to. :headache: People think I'm nuts when they see me doing that. :sad2:

I'm from NJ and I absolutely LOVE not having to pump my own gas!! :thumbsup2

Ready for some great news? You don't actually have to get out to see which side the gas cap is on. You can find out by looking at the gas gauge.
Some cars have a little arrow somewhere on their gas gauge that points to the side of the car that the gas tank is on.

If the car doesn't have that arrow, there may also be a little gas pump decal on their gas gauge. This decal tells you which side of the car that your gas tank is on. If it's on the right side of the pump, then your gas tank is located on the right of the car. If it's on the left, the gas pump faces the left.

I agree, my dad refused to use a credit card, I mean he NEVER had one and would not get one, also he would not use a debit or ATM card, he walked in and paid cash for everything. And I am here to tell you that he could afford to pay for anything that he wanted in cash including his new house and his new car, He just didn't believe in credit cards. As far as using your ATM card, it authorizes a certain amount and if you don't use that amount and use a smaller amt you have to wait for it to drop off and become available. So not everyone who pays cash is a credit risk or a loser who can't get credit.

Not necessarily. That is only if you use your debit as credit. And most pumps will list on there up to a 50 or 75 dollar hold depending on the store. If you type in your PIN, it withdraws the exact amount immediately.

I agree with this! Or at least some hand wipes. I hate it when you get it on your hands and have to deal with the smell.

I have to admit, I am truly perplexed by all the comments about splashing gas and getting it on your hands. How on earth does that happen? I have never had gas get on my hands, nor has anybody I've travelled with.

Not in the self serve stations I've ever seen...payment is upfront. I'm not sure what happens if you fill your tank, since the amount is unknown until you're done...I've never done it. I rarely pay cash for self serve. When I have, I got a specific amount.

It really depends on the area. In my hometown, many stores would have specific pumps that were not prepay (those closest to the store and therefore in full view.) When I went to school in Kirksville, there were no prepay pumps there. Of course, you are talking a town of about 13,000 people. Where I live now it is actually a law. It seems like smalle towns are a lot less likely to have prepay than large cities.
