Jersey girls don't pump gas

Despite all NJ gas stations being full serve, we still have lower than average gas prices. I don't want to give that up although I don't see it as a big voting issue.

Your having lower gas prices has nothing to do with full service vs. self service. It has to do with state taxes on gasoline.

Usernames don't always fit the user. ;)

So true.. I havent been 25 for a long time

Where you come up with things, I don't know. "I find its mostly people who cant get credit-or dont have a bank account who pay cash-from what I see"...how "highclass" and judgmental of you. Do you park yourself at gas stations and watch how people pay? And then quiz them on why they pay cash? :confused3 Bizarre.

I pay with a credit card at home. In NJ, finally with this past weekend's trip, I made sure to have enough cash on me to buy gas with cash because it costs less. Usually I charge just about everything on a trip. What about when you pay for other things with a credit card? Do you trust them? :confused3

Exactly.. Its costs on average it seems $.06 more per gallon to pay with a credit card or debit card.

I just rode by the cash station a few minutes ago $2.37 cash vs $2.43 credit.

Why would I even want to use my credit card?

I'll take your word for it that is true--I never checked myself, so I don't know.

I do know that we seem to pay very high property taxes, 7% sales tax on all "non-essential" purchases, and our personal income tax isn't cheap.

Again, if the state tax on gas is what makes it cost less than most states, it's one small break that we get. We also get the tiny perk of never having to pump our own gas, and as you can see, most of us don't want to give it up.

It is not that way everywhere. Most places in Sussex and Warren Cty are the same price cash or credit.

If that's your cause, though, go for it. Everyone has something they simply will not do. For some it's murder, for others it might be pumping gas.

You obviously have never been in a NJ shopping mall, parking lot on a Saturday. :lmao: Bergen County still has Blue laws, which means almost all the stores are closed on Sundays. So all the major shopping, for those who work week days, is done on Saturday. I swear, some people have committed murder in those Jersey mall parking lots, trying to get a space. :scared1: :drive:

I don't think anyone is saying that it's a cause and effect relationship ...that NJ has full serve, therefore the price is lower. :confused3 What they're saying is that it's full serve AND the prices still manage to be low. What they don't want to give is the full serve. They're not saying that if they give up full serve, that they would also be giving up the low prices.

I thought maybe that was your exit.

We don't have prepayment. All we do is tell them a dollar amount or to fill it up. We settle up when the transaction is concluded.

From my travels, prepayment exists everywhere people pump their own gas. If you pay by cc, you can swipe. If you pay with cash, you have to go into the store, arrange payment, fill the car up, go back into the store to collect change, and then carry on. I could be wrong but that's just what I've experienced.

:confused3

Here, you put the gas in (whatever amount you want) and then go in and pay the amount you put in.

Ahh ok. I am in Morris. It is annoying. I think its been about a year since most places started doing that Before I would always just pay with a debit card.

Not in the self serve stations I've ever seen...payment is upfront. I'm not sure what happens if you fill your tank, since the amount is unknown until you're done...I've never done it. I rarely pay cash for self serve. When I have, I got a specific amount.

Here in WI, I would say 99% of the gas stations are self serve. I don't think I've ever seen a station that required pre-payment. :confused3 If you use a CC, you swipe it, and put your gas in.

If you are going to pay with cash, you push the "pay inside" button on the pump, put the gas in and go inside and pay. It isn't some 20 min transaction. :confused3

:confused3 Not sure what the 20 minute transaction reference means , but anyway...haven't been to Wisconsin lately, but obviously things are done differently around the country. Got it. :thumbsup2

Back when I was a teenager and didn't have a credit card yet, if the station required payment up front and I wanted to fill the tank, I'd go in and give them enough cash to cover it, then go back in to get the change.

Around here, you swipe your card first if using one, but for cash, you just pay after.

If I want to save $.60 , I'll clip coupons. Gas is nasty, stinky stuff. He proposed that I get out of my car, leaving my children in their car seats, possibly dressed in heels, stocking and a dress in 10 degree weather. Yeah , right.

Oh the horror. You sound like quite the DIVA. THIS "issue" cause a public outcry? Sounds pretty stupid if you ask me.

I just see no need to have someone pump it for me. I can think of a hundred other things I'd rather have someone do for me. It just seems ridiculous and over the top.

Not here. Due to all the drive offs without paying, its either credit card or pay up front.

If you are paying up front it means standing in line waiting while the person in front of you goes through 100 or so lottery tickets they have.
Then if you have any cash coming back, you have to go back and stand in line again behind someone else checking their lottery tickets.

Needless to say I use a credit card.

We have stations here that give the cash discount, and it is a discount. The credit card price matches the price of the stations that don't give a cash discount. It's illegal to charge more to use a credit card, but not illegal to charge less for using cash.

I am not trying to be rude at all, but that could never happen in NY. At least not on Long Island or the city. People would just be driving off all the time without paying for their gas! I remember once going upstate NY (wayyyyyyyy upstate - almost to Canada) to visit a friend at college. We were all shocked and amazed that you could pump your gas and THEN go in and pay for it. I just had never seen that level of trustworthiness here before.

How funny. 15 pages of fierce debate about pumping gas. I love it when other people pump gas for me. I know how to do it. I would just rather not. I don't think it's a feminist issue. Heck, I don't think my husband likes to pump gas either. And what's with the New Jersey put downs? Do you really think Minnesota or Nevada (2 states picked at random-no put down implied nor intended) are better or worse?

and no I have never lived in Jersey, but given a choice, I always love to gas up there.

But when "I" use a credit card to make a purchase, "I" swipe it. This attendant is leaving your eyesite to scan your card. I would not be comfortable with that situation either.

See my earlier post....THEY NEVER LEAVE YOUR EYESIGHT.

You watch them the entire time. It's not like they are walking off with your credit card. You pull up, roll down your window. The attendant comes over. You say what you would like: "$20 regular cash, fill it regular cash, fill it regular credit".....whatever. The attendant then walks about 2 feet away, puts in your credit card (if you are paying by credit), puts in that the machine should stop at $20, unscrews your gas cap, puts the nozzle in, and starts filling the car.

He then goes to another car, leaving your card in the machine, where you can see it the entire time. When the amount of gas you wanted is in your car, he then removes the nozzle and hands you your credit card and receipt. Unless he has an extreme photographic memory, there is no way he can copy down your credit card number. You see him the entire time he is pumping your gas.

It's the same with cash. If you are only getting $20 of regular, at the end when he is done filling up your car, he comes to your window and you hand him $20. You can usually also do this at the beginning too.

I think i'm going to video tape the next time I get gas just to clear up the confusion. And once again, it's not that I can't or refuse to pump my own gas, it's ILLEGAL. The attendants literally stop you from touching the pump. Sorry, but i'm not willing to battle and go to jail over the right to pump my own gas. If I so desperately wanted to, I would drive over a town and fill up there. It does not make me any less of a woman because someone pumps my gas for me.
