There is a mobile barbecue place in the small town I teach in that has a sign out front with some of their items. They have listed Jersey fries and shadow taters. I'm curious if those are things they just made up or if they are dishes that I've never heard of. Anybody?

I'm in Jersey and I think they mean the fries covered in Gravy and Cheese.

Personally we do Train Wreck fries- cheese, bacon, scallions, guacamole and ranch dressing.(sometimes no guac if I don't have an avacado)

We call them disco fries, because they're what you order at the diner after the club.

yup in diners around here they are disco fries, however the french Canadian in me just wants to scream POUTINE!

here in Jersey we have boardwalk fries. Those are handcut fries, slightly chunky. Sometimes you put malt vinegar on them.

I think "jersey fries" are whatever the restaurant wants them to be. In one place around here (and I'm in Jersey) they are curly fries with spice. Another place they are not curly, there just regular fries. Personally, those fries in gravy are pretty nasty looking! Never seen them in Jersey!

Well I'm in Central Jersey - so what does that make me??????

Roughly, if you're north of 195 you're north...south of 195, south. "Central Jersey" is really a figment of the imagination. Goes back to when there were only 2 area codes in the state. 201 was north - 609 was south.

Now, there are people who will tell you they have lived in "central Jersey" their entire lives because of something to do with the divisions in high school sports. ;) Of course this is just crazy! The NJSIAA just made that distinction so the schools in the middle part of the state would have a chance to participate in state playoffs and championships. (disclaimer: I have no idea if that's true...but it sure sounds good). :upsidedow

Seriously, to everyone else in the state, you don't live in Central Jersey, you're either north or south.

I'm proud to be a Central Jersey girl. But I do have to say that I used to live in Southern Hunterdon Cty in a 609 area code and felt it was much more southern then living in Somerset County. I'm now in the 908 (former 201) area code. Its soooo far north!!:lmao:

:banana:another 908er here! Everytime the NY news says north and west of the city is getting a foot of snow- that's us. Although we are not so much north- but definately West. I can almost walk to PA.

Those fries with gravy look good. I had some at the Big Foot Lodge in Memphis (the place that was on Man vs. Food), but they were called poutine, as one poster mentioned. I thought the gravy was great with the fries, but the cheese curds were kind of weird. I would have preferred melted cheese. I guess I'll have to check out the barbecue place, but mobile places kind of skeeve me out. I'm guessing the shadow tater is just something they made up.

To me that's the difference between disco fries and poutine. Disco just has melted cheese where poutine usually is cheese curds (or as we call them at my house, squeaky cheese because it squeaks between your teeth...freaky!)

Here in north jersey, fried with cheese and gravy are probably the most ordered item on the menu after midnight!

I'm starting to understand why KFC has that menu item in a bowl with both cheese and gravy. I've always wondered who ordered that because I've never heard of such a thing!

That is the best way to eat fries.
