I have heard several conflicting reports...I hope you can help me.
Are jeans allowed in the dining rooms during dinner on the Magic?

Thanks!

:cool1:

They're not supposed to be, but I've seen my share of jean shorts, jean capris, and jean skirts in the dining rooms. As a fan of casual dress that is fine by me. I've even worn the jean capris and a blouse the first night. I read somewhere that the more expensive the line the more casual the dress...which I think is true. If you can afford to be there you don't need to worry about what you or anyone else is wearing, as long as it is decent.

Yes, reports are now..with the updated dress code..jeans are allowed in the dining rooms on casual nights.

I just found that out, yippee !!! Not that I'll be wearing jeans, just because they take quite a bit of room in the suitcase and I can't wear them during the day because of the heat...but glad to hear that those that want to wear jeans can do so without guilt.

Perhaps i am just old fashioned as seem to be the only one that is not happy by this. Do not feel that jeans are correct wear for dining and you would not wear them in a restaurant so why allow them on the cruise.
Just my thoughts but feel they cannot be classed as smart dress. :sad2:

No, you are not the only one but alot of us have already voiced our opinion on the poll thread Dress code a poll for the masses. I suppose that making sure you note your feelings on the comment card or emailing DCL is the only thing that might change things back.

Actually, I see jeans a lot in WDW restaurants .. so why not for DCL casual nights?

Surely traditiion has always been on cruises for smart evening dress and this is why we were so much looking forward to our cruise. Do hope that Disney reverse this decision as we have all of our gear planned and it is a shame to bring all the way from England if no-one bothers to dress correctly in the restaurants. Does anyone else feel strongly about this and have they made their feelings known to Disney?

I think you have a great point Skallywag. From what I've read, tradition on the old steam liners of the past held that dinner was the big event. People would dress up and make an event out of it.

I think Disney has attempted to capture as much of that tradition as possible. From the decor of the ship, to rotating your Serving Staff with you, to the multi-course menus. So, it would seem appropriate to dress for the part.

I think Walt Disney World, and the other them parks for that matter, are in a realm of their own. Basically, almost any type of dress goes at any restaurant at WDW. Except for Victoria & Albert's, I can't think of a single restaurant that isn't "Resort Casual." Given the atmosphere of WDW I think the casual dress is fine and more than appropriate.

It's interesting to look at this issue anothe way too. What if, on the next Disney ship, they decide that people just want casual eating experiences. What if the restaurants are less themed and more casual in and of themselves. Say, more along the lines of Topsiders rather than Lumiere's or Triton's. I wonder what kind of responses this would bring about?

We wear jeans in restaurants, disney and othewise. Just depending on the day and whats going on. I don't think it hurts anything to have someone wear jeans on a cruise..maybe they should just plan a jean night, like tropical and pirate, then everyone could be comfy.

Tradition for oldtime cruising may have been getting dressed for dinner and making dinner an event but the Disney ships are geared towards family cruising. For us to get all dressed up everynight for dinner would mean that I need to pull my kids from the pools, activities, or clubs even earlier so that they can be all fancied up when they eat to please other people. I have to stress out getting three kids dressed who would rather do anything but put those darn khakis, polos, dress socks and black shoes on night after night as I'm trying get myself in what will please the masses. All that stress and an hour later they are running back to the room to get out of it all to get comfortable again. Formal and Semi-Formal okay but everynight, enough already. We are on vacation trying to get away from stress and the normal routine. Would I wear jeans to dinner, probably not. Would my kids wear nice jeans to dinner, probably. We don't own any ratty clothes that would offend anyone and the type of fabric pants are made out of should have no affect on the food on someone elses plate. My children are very well behaved, have excellent manners and we are at dinner to spend time with them and share our days. I've always been too busy talking to my family to notice what the people in all the tables next to me were wearing.

I guess I never understood why so many people get so upset about what people wear to dinner. If it weren't a cruise ship overrun with kids I would understand a bit better. It just makes no sense to me why it would matter to someone whether my pants were demin or khaki.

I still think that those that want to wear jeans should go to topsiders for the buffet ... even though that the resturants are not victoria and alberts they still should command a dress code that people should follow and jeans should not be part of it . But that is just my opinion ... any who I think jeans are way too heavy to wear in that climate

Just my opinion

I don't see anyone "getting so upset." Just two different opinions being presented.

I also fault DCL for much of the confusion surrounding suggested dress. Prior to the recent changes they asked that no jeans or shorts be worn to the dining rooms in the evening. Much confusion could have been prevented had they stuck with that original requirement. You show up in jeans or shorts, you don't enter. Simple enough.

The difficulty is finding some sort of middle where everyone can feel comfortable. My only concern is that because jeans are now accepted and welcomed in the dining rooms, people will take the next step and start wearing shorts. Then what? Wet bathing suits? Personally, I'd rather not see that while I'm eating. :)

I'm still thinking that Disney will dress-down the next set or ships so that people will feel more at home dressing-down themselves for dinner.

I agree a Pop Cent or a World of sport ship to accomodate those that dont want to dress up would be fine ... they could have one resturant and multipul buffets

I know my opinion is strong but it is just my opinion

Personally, as long as someone looks decent and by that I mean nice jeans with a nice blouse and shoes or a decent outfit, I think that's great. I don't look at other people when I eat dinner b/c I'm busy enjoying the atmosphere of the restaurant and my tablemates. Also, alot of people don't have the money to go out and buy fancy clothes that they are never going to wear again after spending $$$ on the cruise. I work at a place that is casual and we wear jeans to work everyday so I currently do not own dresses or skirts and I had to go out and purchase some of these items which is fine however, I look just as nice in some jean capris with my flowing sleeveless blouse and a cute jacket and some low heels. JMO but people should chill as long as there are no wet bathing suits or short shorts or whatever. If people want to be all decked out in gowns and tuxes it seems to me they want to go on the Royal C. or some other line.

On formal/semi-formal night I can understand not wearing jeans & require shirts with collars. I know I am in the minority, but I have no problem with people wearing shorts to dinner. As long as they are decent, clean and not full of holes, I would not even notice. I did wear dockers all week to dinner, except formal/semi I wore a tux.

What do most people wear when the go out to eat at a local restruant, say like Olive Garden or Applebees? I would say that around here it would be in jeans & in the warmer months shorts..

DrCavin - my sentiments exactly!! But to each their own and I do understand the fact that many people would be afraid if DCL lets the standards down that it would get out of hand and people would indeed push the bar as always and come to dinner in holey shorts and flip flops

That seems to be the biggest concern. With the old dress code there were people wearing jeans anyway & some in shorts. On formal night the table next to us had a family wearing tank tops & shorts & the DH's shirt had the big arm holes so we were treated to everything else. They probably could have snuck in quietly but they had to show up an hour late being loud about how they didn't care about formal night. We had sat near them the night before in Palo & they were decked out to the nines so it wasn't a matter of not having anything to wear. By dropping the level of the dress code there is concern that more people will take it to that point. It's not the nice jeans that are really the problem.

I do understand that Lisa and you know dress code or not who wants to sit and look at someone's underarm all night while eating dinner and why would people feel comfortable going out for a nice dinner like that is beyond me. Oh well it's all good :goodvibes
