Jeans for dinner

OK, I thought I understood the dress code for dinner but I guess not. I understand formal and semi-formal nights require slacks, dress shirt and maybe a jacket but I tought jeans and polo was considered 'cruise casual'? Today we got an email from DCL that says "Nice dining attire (no jeans or shorts at dinner, please)"

So for a twelve night cruise we'll have one formal and one semi-formal and then I have to wear slacks the other 10 nights?

~Mike

Now we are all confused. Here is my thought, look nice, don't wear clothes with holes in them. Make sure they are clean, and act respectable. Have a great time.

My favorite experience with "ripped jeans" is what happened to my then 16 year old DD Samantha. We were traveling in London and she wanted to visit Harrod's. I told her about their dress code but she was sure they would let her in with her very expensive "ripped jeans". Needless to say, she was not allowed to enter the store and had to return to the hotel to change.

I personally don't travel with jeans as they weigh a ton in the suitcase and are not comfortable for me on long flights. I prefer to take MORE lightweight clothes.

Just my thoughts...

Many of the cathedrals in Europe have a "no shorts" policy. We saw people get turned away from the Palermo Catherdral for wearing shorts. My daughter had on capris and my son had on long baggies....but they didn't stop us. I guess maybe the criteria was as long as their knees weren't showing we were ok.

We got the same message. Last week now I will be packing differently. :(

This is part of the message from Disney we got last week

Packing for Paradise. Here are a few tips on things to bring. For more details, be sure to refer to the Planning Center.

Days
• Casual wear (shorts, slacks, sundresses, jeans)
• Comfortable shoes (sandals, sneakers, boat shoes)
• Beach and pool wear (swimsuits, wraps, t-shirts)

Evenings
• Don’t forget a jacket or sweater. Yes, it’s the tropics, but the nights can be a bit breezy.
• Nice dining attire (no jeans or shorts at dinner, please)
• Optional formal attire
• Themed attire is welcome for Pirates IN The Caribbean night.

I find the no jeans or shorts just short of total BS. My humble opinion of course. I'm on vacation I should be able to dress down. I really find it hard to believe I'm down grading someone's vacation experience because I'm dressed in jeans or shorts.

Mike you're right its to do with covering your knees as a mark of respect in churchs/cathedrals in Europe. Its the same reason on some trips they recommend women take a sarong to go over shorts so that they cover up their knees.

I fail to understand why people cannot follow the rules/recommendations of DCL. Part of the cruise experience is that you do dress nice for dinner. Does it irritate me when someone shows up looking like a slob? Yes.

.

I agree with you. People know going in what the dress requirement is and they have the options to cruise with DCL or not or eat somewhere else on the ship. Over the years I have seen the dinner attire become extremely casual. Short shorts, tank tops, jeans, you get the picture. When jeans were allowed you saw the old, the torn, the name brands. Jeans means jeans to people no matter what they look like. It bothered me the last time in Sept so I talked to the Head Waiter about it. DCL doesn't like it either but (excuse the pun) don't want to rock the boat so they just don't say anything. I don't agree with it but that's Disney. I just don't get why people don't follow the rules. If you don't like it don't cruise or go hungry.

I do not mind following the rules but the DCL website does not state "no jeans" on cruise casual nights.

Personally what other people wear on their holiday doesn't ruin mine but thats just me I guess. As long as people don't dress as if they are eating in their own home I don't see why anyone would take offense at someone in jeans. I can't say I pay that much attention to what people wear! I accept on Formal or Semi Formal you may notice if someone is dressed down and then maybe yes feel well they should have made an effort, but I don't see how what I wear is going to upset someone else unless to be honest people are being far to superficial about me for me to care! Sorry this is just my opinion! Im sure your all going to have a go at me about it but its the way I feel! Next thing you know they will have a "no ugly people" rule incase that offends people!

I just wish there would be one party line from DCL so I knew what the dress code is! :confused3

I guess I will follow the most recent that Mike (Rogillio) posted. :thumbsup2

We have been on many cruises all 7 & 12 nights and we are heading to the baltics in a few short weeks. While the girls and I love fressing up my husband will not dress up fro any reason. It is like pulling teeth just to get him to wear slacks for the formal/semi formal nights. The remainder of the nights he always wore nice jeans and a polo shirt. No one ever said anything to him or told him he couldn't eat in the dining room. We may have had a few stares or offended others in the dining room, but frankly I have never noticed or been bothered by it. He would never show up in shorts or tank top and he loathes flip flops so that would never be an issue, he is just a jeans guy and I hate to try to change him or make him buy a new wardrobe for vacation.

After all this is vacation, it is supposed to be fun for all, if you want to dress up dress up if you want to be a little more casual be casual. (I would just keep it conservative as this is a family cruise line :goodvibes)

This is just my opinion, I know the jeans for dinner thing can be a pretty heated debate ..

I have also heard the Wonder is more Casual. We are taking our first 7 day Magic Cruise next year and I look forward to dressing up!

I am so confussed, I can't wait to see what people wear on our cruise. Doing the 5 day wonder. DH and DS are not going to be happy when they see how other people are dressed and I make them wear a suit, because I am confussed about what to wear. IMHO This stinks. I don't have a problem with what people wear I just wish DCL was clear (please).

We've seen people in jean shorts, cut offs, holes in them. But it didn't ruin our Dinner

No, it honestly doesn't ruin my dinner. I just think rules were made to NOT be broken whether a person agrees to them or not. My last post might have sounded a bit more harsh than what I meant it to be. Believe me, I love my jeans and I am in them now. I understand that Disney isn't being consistent with their policies and that is a HUGE problem.

I think for us dressing up is just part of the experience. I love the pictures that we have of my DH, SIL and GS in their tuxedos. For others, I suppose that not dressing up is what they want to do on vacation. It is not going to make or break my vacation if someone is not super dressed up.

The DCL website states: Dinner attire is "cruise casual," meaning no shorts, swimwear or tank tops. Palo diners will want to dress up a bit more than when dining at Lumiere's or Triton's, though Guests are free to dress up for any dinner.

This is always such a heated topic. We have found that the Wonder is more casual than the Magic. My DH has only worn a suit once in our 15 cruises, we learned that hauling all those formal clothes just was too much hassle for us, so now we are a nice button down shirt kakhi pant, summer dress family.
I personally think jeans are too casual so I do not bring them for him, the girls bring fancy flip flops for their shoes now, as mastering the decks with high heels can be a bit of a challenge.
Formal night we go a little more dressy with black dresses and DH wears a tie with his black pants and black shirt.
I really have no concern what others are wearing so you can do whatever you like around me and I will be ok with that. We wear what we are comfortable in and we enjoy the heck of out spending time with each other as this is priceless to us.
I have seen shorts in the dining rooms, and jeans again no issues with me or with the crew members.
Our oldest is getting married on the beach in Key West, she will wear a Vera Wang, her fiance will wear a white button down and new kakhi shorts...to each their own. It is not what you wear it is who you wear it with.
Enjoy your cruise:cool1:

My thoughts are this is a vacation in a hot place with swimming and other excursions, and this is a ship filled with children. If you have the early seating, then you need to be back around 4:30 so that everyone can take turns showering and primping to eat at 5:45. Don't forget about allotting time for ironing, so maybe even earlier. So if you must dress up for dinner, then basically you need 2-3 sets of clothes per day. On this trip, I found myself spending more time with dressing and styling my hair and makeup than I normally do when NOT on vacation. (Yes, I work full time, and I do my hair and makeup every single morning). We live within driving distance, but I could easily see this being a problem for those who fly. And as far as 'there are other places to eat', yes, but it is basically the same thing every time. We ate breakfast at Beach Blanket Buffet every morning, and that got old too.

That's just my opinion. We did dress up for the dress-up night.
