Jeanne Update from Orlando
Its 9:44 PM and the wind is howling outside. My windows are making funny noises. It sounds like I am inside the Haunted Mansion. Everything is rattling. Curfew is in effect effecitve 11 PM.

My husband had to go to work at Orlando International Airport (left at 8:30PM) tonight and called me and told me that there were a lot of trees down. Lights are already going out.

I am sitting here at my computer because I am basically scared to smithereens. I don't know how to turn on the generator. My husband showed my 11 yr. old how to do it and hopefully he will and won't blow up the house.

Right now they have tornado warnings and they are saying that it will head straight to Orlando. Right now winds from the outer bands are at 100 mph.

No matter what, we have to tough it out. A lot of the companies here fired a lot of workers for not reporting to work as they stayed home to secure their residences and get their families ready. Florida Hospital fired about 11 nurses. Some Police Departments fired some of their police officers.

The weatherman ( who was been on the money so far with all the other hurricanes) said that we will have a major hit by 3 to 4AM with winds gust over 140 mph with 90 mph in Kissimmee. She is making landfall right now. So lets brace and I will let you know how I make out.

I am a little concerned because we had some water during the last one and the builder was supposed to come out an check it out and fix it, but nothing so far.

Hopefully, we will be okay. I know we are going to lose power, but for how long I don't know. As soon as I get back on I will post what happens.

Take care and good night to everyone. Your prayers are needed now.

Well I sure hope you are okay, we just got done dealing with Ivan so I understand totally what you're going through, only that Florida isn't as wide as Alabama so there isn't very much land that can escape a big storm.

If you do use the generators please be careful, we had no hurricane related deaths in my city but we did have a very prominent elderly lady in our community die along with her nurse and maid because of the incorrect use of a generator. They are wonderful things just know you are using them correctly.

My sister lives in Orlando as well, she had alot of trees down with Charley, and a tree on her fence from Frances. Hopefully everyone will be okay, all anyone can really do now is wait.

When Ivan came through I had on my headphones and watched my battery powered tv in the hallway, I could not hear the wind in there. I am 1 1/2 hours from the coast and we still got alot of damange here from Ivan.

I hope everything is alright.

Love and prayers to you. Also it is unethical, if not illegal,l for a company to terminate employees for trying to protect their lives/family during a weather emergency.

I wish you well....all of Florida residents are in my prayers right now. I cannot even imagine what you are going through. Good luck, and post when things are up and running again.
Here's some pixie dust coming your way.
Jo

My wife went to work this morning at the hospital for her 4th hurricane tour of duty. Jeanne is missing us for the most part but nerves are frazzled. My wife's boss quit over the hospital's treatment of their dedicated employees. They give her every other Christmas off. Why not every other hurricane?

Lights have been flickering, but for the most part they have remained on, luckily for us.

The winds are still about 75-85 mph. The howling is now annoying and I am sitting here watching the fences swaying in the wind. Hopefully, we will be able to assess whatever damages have occurred.

Hubby is still at work and called me to tell me that he won't be coming home until sometime tomorrow. He related that Orlando International Airport was flooded, heavy damage. The American Airlines Terminal Side roof had collapsed. He will let me know as soon as they tell them when the airport will reopen.

If my power stays, I will keep you updated.

Hurricane Jeanne survivor here. I live in West Palm area....right where she hit. Everything is ok and fine. I will say regarding the quote: Florida is a right to work state. This means you can be fired from your job, any job in Florida, for any reason at any time. So yes a company could terminate you if you made them mad enough. Unethical...yes.....illegal, hardly.

Glad to here everything is alright in W. Palm. I have a seminar there Thurs. then on to HHN Opening Scare-a-monies!

Thank you so much for keeping us up dated on conditions in Florida. Our church has continued to pray for all the Florida residents and other states that have been affected by these hurricanes. We only have tornados here!:earseek: Please continue to post information. Also, if any one knows about road conditions from Georgia to Kissimmee, please could you post information on the board. We will be on the road soon. Thank you again:wave:

We survived. Hubby came home late last night and the airport was up and ready to be open today at noon. Lost power on and off, so we basically did essentials. Los phone service and had no cell until late this afternoon.

Have water damage and now it is a matter of getting everything cleaned up, dried, etc. School closed for another day (lost two days) and added on to the 10 previously - that is 12 days we have to make up. How many more days can we give up? Kids are antsy. I never thought I would hear the words, "I can't wait to go back to school, its boring here and there is nothing to do."

Hopefully, when we go back to school my son will have a whole bunch of postcards waiting for him and that will cheer him up. For those of you who have not read any of the threads, they are doing a postcard exchange and getting cards from all over. They had started coming in last week and they were really excited about it. We will see how many more come in.

Take care and know that we are okay. The parks suffered minor damage with Epcot's Living Seas suffering the most severe and was going to be closed today.

Secondly, let me add that the airport authorities did set up an emergency shelter for the workers and their families. There were many employees who stayed behind and the restaurants did remain open to serve them, their families and stranded families.

I opted to stay home with my kids, with the conditions that if anything really bad happened I would respond to the shelter once it was safe to do so.
