Jeanne Update from Orlando
Its 9:44 PM and the wind is howling outside. My windows are making funny noises. It sounds like I am inside the Haunted Mansion. Everything is rattling. Curfew is in effect effecitve 11 PM.

My husband had to go to work at Orlando International Airport (left at 8:30PM) tonight and called me and told me that there were a lot of trees down. Lights are already going out.

I am sitting here at my computer because I am basically scared to smithereens. I don't know how to turn on the generator. My husband showed my 11 yr. old how to do it and hopefully he will and won't blow up the house.

Right now they have tornado warnings and they are saying that it will head straight to Orlando. Right now winds from the outer bands are at 100 mph.

No matter what, we have to tough it out. A lot of the companies here fired a lot of workers for not reporting to work as they stayed home to secure their residences and get their families ready. Florida Hospital fired about 11 nurses. Some Police Departments fired some of their police officers.

The weatherman ( who was been on the money so far with all the other hurricanes) said that we will have a major hit by 3 to 4AM with winds gust over 140 mph with 90 mph in Kissimmee. She is making landfall right now. So lets brace and I will let you know how I make out.

I am a little concerned because we had some water during the last one and the builder was supposed to come out an check it out and fix it, but nothing so far.

Hopefully, we will be okay. I know we are going to lose power, but for how long I don't know. As soon as I get back on I will post what happens.

Take care and good night to everyone. Your prayers are needed now.

Not much I can do from AL but wish you the best. Try not to be scared - I'm sure you'll get through it ok. I would hate to be alone with my kids through one - was glad my DH was here for Ivan. It's ridiculous that people are getting fired.... what are those people thinking?!?!?!? What kind of employee will they have after the storm passes if they have no house and their families were put in danger. ug - gotta wonder about the logic there. As far as I can tell - generators aren't too hard to start - I bet your 11 year old will be able to start it, and very proud once he's done it! Keep us informed and stay safe -

I hope it helps somewhat to know that there are a lot of people out here praying for you and everyone in FL who have been hit so hard, so often this year with the hurricanes. Stay safe and take comfort in our prayers. God bless!

Take care and I am sorry you are alone right now..Keep a radio on if to keep up with the news and try not to worry too much. You are all in our thoughts and prayers right now...stay safe..:sunny:

Stay safe and keep us updated on how you're doing! We're praying for you!

Sending you good thoughts from Chicago...I know you will get through this. Heading down your way this Wednesday for our Monday wedding. I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts.

Stay safe and know we are thinking of you. As you can tell, your husband may be at work, but you are not alone! Dis-ers always stick together! Good Luck.

You may feel alone but please know many hearts are with you tonight!

I don't know that I would want an 11 year old starting a generator though...maybe best to wait until your husband gets home? I hope you can still see this message!

On another note, anyone who may be using a generator, please be sure it's in a well ventilated area OUTSIDE the house; heard a sad story about carbon monoxide hurting a family because their generator was not properly ventilated.

Hoping the best for you and your family and home!!!

May the lord bless you and keep you safe.

Just a little prayer from Ohio.:grouphug:

Sending you my prayers and comforting vibes. Stay safe, and I am hoping all will be well for you when this is all done and over with.

Prayers and positive vibes being sent your way ~~~~~~~~~

I second the notion to not let an 11 yr old start up the generator (especially if said 11 yr old has never done it before!)

I trust my 11 yr. old with things like that than my husband. He is very mechanically inclined. He is the one who figures things out. He has one of those keen minds.

Yes, we put it out on the lanai - but normally after we get up. The fridge stays cold at night, if no one opens it.

THere are plenty of flashlights and batteries for the dark, but then we need to get cooking. I have to have my cup of joe in the morning.

Take care - its pretty nasty now but I hope we will be okay.

Add my thoughts and prayers! Also sent you a pm. :D

My hubby was a policeman when we married and I too have been alone as these weather systems come in. I know about how you are feeling. You will make it. Just take it one moment at a time. I trust my 12 year old twin boys to do many things for me. Their dad teaches them and I sit with them to supervise them. You know your child and your husband. Together you will make it. That is how I make it with my children when we are alone. Keep praying and keep busy if you can. There are lots of noises out there with the wind and rain. There are many, many people with you as you go through this.
