When you are in a parking lot do you cross at a crosswalk or wait until the road is clear. Or do you plow right into the parking lot and assume people are going to stop no matter what. It takes me about 5 minutes to get from one end of the shopping center near my house to the other side. Everyone just assumes people are going to stop and walk right out into the street. Today picking my son up from school some lady walked right in front of my car without even turning her head to see if there were cars coming. I'm tired of it. Fair warning people of Charlotte- cross at the crosswalk or be prepared to get run over.

Not a recommended course of action. Of course, where you'd be going, you wouldn't have to worry about crosswalk infractions. ;)

But yeah, I've had those who just walk right out in front of me without looking. That's what a loud horn is for! :thumbsup2

We do not typically have crosswalks in our shopping centers.

And I live off of A1A and the way beach accesses are set up, you are not expected to walk a mile to the nearest crosswalk. Crossing to reach the beach access where it is is not a ticketable offense.

However--one should ALWAYS look both ways before crossing the street. That's just common sense.:goodvibes

I tend to let the morons walk out in front of me and then slam on my brakes and lay on the horn. They get the point quick! :rotfl2:

Even crosswalks don't seem to matter...once at our shopping mall, my mother was a few feet in front of me and in the middle of the crosswalk when a woman came flying around the corner in her SUV. She didn't slow down at all...instead, she laid on her horn as she flew by, then yelled, "Get out of my way!!!" My mother had to run forward to avoid being hit :sad2:

Our very busy shoprite has 3 parking lots, one across the street. There was a crosswalk, but where I live, people don't seem to realize that pedestrans have the right of way - you really had to run across! The put in a traffic light, and the other day, this man almost got himself killed by walking across - his light was red. I honestly thought he was going to get killed!

I had someone do that tome at Walmart while I was crossing with my children. At walmart, teh entire front ofthe store has the crosswalk pattern and there are stop signs and it is Florida law that when there is a crosswalk, pedestrians have right of way.

I mean--she was wayyyyy far away and then just gunned it on the accelerator (you could hear it!) and we had to run out of the crosswalk. She did "slow down" while shouting expletives at us when she got close.

I can't stand people who just don't follow the rules and endanger lives on purpose to make a point. Playing "chicken" with pedestrians--is not okay...especially if they aren't doing anything wrong but not even if they are.

Unfortunately she was too fast for me to toss some granny panties in the event it was a wedgie that made her this crazy.

i live in the middle of no where.....we dont even have crosswalks.......wait no sidewalks either:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Pedestrians always have the right of way, especially in a parking lot. Should they use the crosswalks, of course. Should you decide to plow them over if they don't, only a crazy person would.

Doesn't that already happen? I lived in Gastonia and worked in Charlotte for 3 years and remember hearing about people being hit and killed quite often. I've lived in a few places and Charlotte was the worst when it came to pedestrian deaths.

I understand that pedestrians have the right of way, but really gets me are those people that, when walking down the aisle to or from their car, walk in the MIDDLE of the lane. Hello? Can't you see me driving behind you in the aisle to get in or out of the lot? MOVE IT!

We lived in NYC for 4 years........yup, you guessed it, we ALWAYS use the crosswalk. We are now in Southern California and there are sooooooooo many cars out here........yup, definitely the crosswalk. :thumbsup2

Pedestrians have the right of way- but be smart... in a duel with a vehicle- the pedestrian is going to come out on the losing side.... I look out for traffic when walking in a parking lot.

Ummm, I do not have eyes in the back of my head, so nope, can't see you driving behind me......:rotfl:

Seriously tho, we use crosswalks and I always look. I teach my children the same thing, it doesn't matter if the ped has the right of way or not, if someone doesn't stop the walker will lose, not the car....not worth it so I just wait until it's clear.

On my commute to work there is this one intersection where traffic is always backed up with cars trying to make a left turn onto the main strip. A few weeks ago they finally put in a left turn signal. Hooray!!! Well, my joy was quickly diminished because the pedestrians dart out to cross the street even though they have a DON'T WALK signal and by the time they clear the crosswalk, the green arrow is gone. It's aggravating!!!! Don't walk means don't walk! I was able to beat them one time and I yelled out the window "You have a don't walk signal" and this girl said "oh come on!" Is that part of the entitlement mentality? It's okay for them to break the law because they have a train to catch?

I'm confused. Are they walking across the street in the middle of the block or from a store into the parking lot? I was always taught that pedestrians in parking lots have right of way and always yield. I even stop and let them go if they are standing on the curb looking to see if it's safe. And people almost always stop for me the same way when I'm the pedestrian. And I live in Charlotte city limits!

I do worry about my ds crossing the street on the way to Matthews library. Even if he has the green light and is in the crosswalk he knows to stop and make eye contact with the driver turning right first. It's people in crosswalks that don't seem to get right of way around around here the most. Go figure.

Best city for pedestrians: Annapolis. Those drivers are great about stopping!!!
