January No Buy: Let's Start the Year Right!

How do all you budget disers budget for things that come up during the week that you did not intend to spend or budget for. For example, pitch in at work for funeral flowers last week, $20.00 each. Someone who works for the company, her apt. building went up in flames (she lost everything), company is asking for donations but not the $20.00 range, asking all to contribute at min $150.00, pitching in for pizza at lunch, $10.00 each, etc. All of these things put a dent in the budget, however, I am trying to save and really watch my own personal budget, even buying my new clothes at thrift stores, cutting back on grocery spending. Just when I think I have a few extra bucks to put away something comes up. No just with work but with family. Going out to dinner last minute with another family. Last week we went out last minute and it cost us $80.00 which was not planned for. I am getting frustrated with the extra spending but do not want to feel cheap to other people. I just want to pad up my savings account. Any advice, especially with work. This list of chip in for this and that continues. Thanks

Well, it was snowing this morning (stopped now) so I was set for a no-buy day since my friend and I rescheduled the movie...but then DH e-mailed me that he paid to park in the garage at work because of the weather. I can't blame him for that! So he put $10 on his flex-card (the parking costs $4 but I think the minimum you can add is $10 at a time). There goes no-buy day #5! Tomorrow is another day...;)

Oh, yeah, a sort of funny thing...I was telling DS when we bought his yogurt yesterday that he needs to make it last a week (he will go through a whole package in 2 or 3 days if we let him!) and I explained that we had a certain amount to spend on groceries and there was still a week left in this month...so he says to me, "And after that, we'll starve!" Has that kid SEEN our freezer lately? I don't think anyone will starve from lack of Gogurt! Well, it's a good thing we're trying to give him some perspective, right? ;)

1/2 - $89.30 (for 2 weeks worth of groceries - this meal planning stuff really works!)

1/8 - -- Alright, this may be cheating, but I'm not counting today. Money was spent, but it came from a special fund that I've been saving up for (Ikea) so it isn't money that came out of my regular budget. But I won't count it as No Buy.
1/9 - $0
1/10 - 110.59 (Big Costco shop. Feeling discouraged. I'm only $40 away from my grocery budget for the month and I know there's a handful of things I still need. Crap).

1/12 - $0 Thank you snow!
1/13 - 33 + 5 on GC (Was doing well until the darn gas light came on! I would've waited 'til tomorow but with a couple feet of snow and a temp of 7 degrees overnight I decided it best to ruin my No Buy day).

1/15 - 37+13+16 (DSW, Target and Outback - so all the spending is on top of 100+ in GC's. But DSW has been my ONLY splurge so far this month - and I really did need new snow boots).

14/15 No Buys!!

I'm doing well, but the 3 year old and I are going to kill each other soon. I don't know what's better, having money or getting out of the house every day!!

My goal for January is 15 no buy days.
Christmas is done, my DS's birthday is done. We have a few birthday parties to go to, but other than that, we don't have any big expenses coming up in January. I'm ready to get back on track after all the crazy holiday spending

January 1 $0 :cool1: We're in for the day, so I'm calling it early. Hoping the $0 for today is a sign of good things in 2011!

January 2 Plans changed and I ended up going out for dinner tonight instead of tomorrow. So $50 for dinner and I went ahead and filled up with gas today $50 gas.

January 3 $0 :cool1: Took the boys to the library and McDonalds, but we were given coupons this summer that allow one free Happy Meal per kiddo once a month, so we used those .

January 4 $25 got my hair cut- I haven't had it cut in over a year. I was ready for a new cut. $100 groceries. $28 DH and I went out to dinner for our date night.

January 5 $0 :cool1:

January 6 $80 presents for upcoming birthday parties/misc. at Target (but ONLY what I went in for, no impulse purchases), $40 gas, $15 to refill my freezer with bread, $10 local bounce place

January 7 $0 :cool1:

January 8 $0 :cool1:

January 9 $0 :cool1:

January 10 $106 groceries, $30 gas, $15 new wiper blades, $12 McDonalds for lunch--this is twice this month, unheard of, but I had a looooooong board meeting this morning and I didn't even have the energy to make PB&J.

January 11 $28 new winter coat for DS #1, $29 eye doctor for DS#1 (this will be reimbursed, but I'll record it anyway).

January 12 $12 prepay for preschool pancake breakfast later this month, $30 gas, $25 dinner with friends, $20 doctor for DS (this will be reimbursed as well), $13 treats after the doctor

January 13 $13 groceries

January 14 $0 :cool1:

January 15 $0 :cool1: Calling it early because we went to a birthday party and now we're in for the day.

January 16 $0 :cool1: Calling it early because we're in for the day.

January 17 $40 gas, $15 PJ party at Panera, $40 dog food, ect at Target. Plus I had to write a HUGE check for DS#2's speech therapy, but that comes out of a different account.

January 18 $8 bread outlet, $10 Starbucks date with my DS#2, $10 eye doctor, $205 :scared1::scared1: groceries.

January 19 $0 :cool1: I did do the Living Social Amazon deal, but I'll take that money out of my Christmas account and then stockpile the gift certificates for Christmas, so I'm not counting it.

January 20 $47 We went to the Museum (we're members so that was free) and dinner with some dear friends. They're moving soon, so we're trying to spend as much time as possible with them while they're still here.

January 21 $0 :cool1:

January 22 $55 Gas, $19 Subway

January 23 $0 :cool1:

January 24 $72 Target, $19 lunch, $9 to wash my horribly dirty car

January 25 $19 Beer...DH had a bunch of "honey do" items to get done today and he enjoys a beer while he's working. It's cheaper than a handy man!

Thanks

What works for me is to be honest with people. If I'm trying to save money, I let people know and then don't go out to eat, chip in, ect. unless I really want to. You are probably not the only person at your job feeling the squeeze, others might be relieved you brought it up first.

I try to be honest with people too - when I explain to my family and friends that we are really trying to save this year, they really understand. Times are tough all over and usually being thrifty is considered a virtue (at least with my group).

I totally understand not wanting to seem cheap - but you could suggest the restaurant in your price range, like Mexican is usually a good dinner for social times (margaritas and it tends to loud) but also budget friendly or what I use to do, was offer to cook a dinner in rather than go out

You work almost seems to be really milking you - I can understand about the collecting a fund for the coworker who was in a fire but donations should always be what you can afford, not a minimum. And as for pizza at lunch - if you bring your own and don't eat the pizza, then they should not expect you to pay. How do you think it would go over in your office community if you did that?

Bottom line for me - I don't think you should scrimp on your items (clothing & food) for the fun of others (flowers & pizza at work; dinner out with family). But that's me - I hope you can find a solution that works for you.:goodvibes
