January No Buy: Let's Start the Year Right!

Thank you! I have blood tests next week and it seems like they are looking for a thyroid problem. We will see.

I'm sorry that you and Mickey Mom are hurt. I think we women rush around thinking about other things and make mistakes like that. It stinks that the recovery takes so long.
Feel better soon. Hopefully, 'they' can figure it out. ::thumbsup2

Today was going to be s spend day. I forgot my lunch at home, so I was going to eat out for lunch. On my way to get BK for lunch I got into an accident instead. Not my fault and no one was hurt. Although my van and his car don't look so good. As the other driver said "his bad and he really screwed up." Well yeh. How many people do you know back up on a major rode.
When I called my DH I told him this was really going to mess up my "No Spend"..lol.
So in the end....It is a 'NO SPEND DAY AFTER ALL!!!:cheer2:DAY 12 OF 10.
So glad that you are okay....and seeing the positive in not buying that lunch. :)

OK, I blew the no-buy day because I had to put gas in the car so I may as well get more groceries tonight (we're almost out of milk anyway!) This is harder than I thought...sigh...
That's how I think about things too! If I have to get something, then make sure it's worthwhile and get the next things on the list, maybe leaving tomorrow as a no buy day. And, yes, it IS hard! I count ANY day that I don't spend (and I can convince DH to stay out of the store) is a SUCCESS! I may aim for a certain number, but each day is a celebration! there have been months that the only reason I got to celebrate was because there was a holiday, and no stores open! :rotfl:

I didn't know you were a teacher too! What subject/grade do you teach? I hope you feel (and sound!) better soon!. . .I need to put gas in the car too. I was hoping to make it until Friday so I could have 5 $0 Days in a row, but I think tomorrow would probably be wiser. I've only gotten gas once this month so far, and it was on the 5th!
 Grade 1, so I have to have that voice. I am going to try tomorrow, so keep your fingers crossed for me. I need to get back, as reports are due shortly. (and I have NOT been doing them while I was off....too tired, and my files are at school)

Ooh, I wish I could put gas in the car only a few times a month. We're driving DD into school (into the city) each morning for choir and orchestra, and then back for DS at least once and often twice a day.

Couldn't talk myself out of a few lots of 3" plastic characters on eBay. DD is using them as rewards in a behavior management thing she's doing with 2-1/2 year old GD. Total with s/h $16.75.

Big savings over buying sets new, but I'm going to have to decide if I want to go commando no-buy:confused:
Personally, I don't commando my no buy days (although DH might disagree ;) ), but rather treat it like a game. DON'T beat your head over a non no buy day!

Good to know! I'm actually just below a 1/4 of a tank. I rarely go much more than that because I get nervous! I have an 11 gallon tank and rarely put more than 8 gallons in it. The lowest I ever let it get (I thought I was going to run out of gas!) I only put in about 8.5 gallons! :rotfl:
Hmmm. I didn't know that, either. I know that I prefer to top it up at halfway between half and 1/4, for the weight in the snow. That said, there have been times when the little gas can light has come on.

Just blew a No Buy day by buying Bridal Ears online. Yay! :goodvibes

I taught grade 1 for four years, so I know how that is! One time when I lost my voice, I was told by administration to just "teach without talking". :confused3

It sounds like it's been a tough couple of days for several people between illness and accidents! Hope everyone recovers soon!

Add me to the list of teachers on board -- I've got grade 4 this year after low enrollment forced me out of K. I can't wait to get back to the little ones, although it probably won't be for another school year or two. We're a small district and I have to wait for a K person to retire or enrollment to spike dramatically.

Bigmama67, if it makes you feel better it took me about 6 years to finish my masters'! I just wasn't motivated. :rotfl:

1/1: groceries (but I forgot how much and don't want to get off the couch!)
1/2: $42 gas, $20 pharmacy, $28 JCPenney, ? Home Depot (again, don't want to get off the couch!). I also returned to Lands' End and Kohl's today, enough to cover what we spent! :) Edited to add: $65 on registration for open swim time. Hopefully we'll get there more often this session than last and I can get some exercise!
1/3: :cool1: (although I feel a bit guilty about it -- the only reason it's a $0 is because I forgot to take the checkbook to pay for after school care.)
1/4: after school care $31.50, take out for dinner ?
1/5: :cool1:
1/6: :cool1:
1/7: $35 after school, $35 dinner, $12 book orders for the boys
1/8: $8 Lowes, $28 gas, $12 things for school
1/9: $60 groceries, $26.50 x2 for school lunches
1/10: :cool1:
1/11: :cool1:
1/12: :cool1:
1/13: $3 groceries
1/14: :cool1:
1/15: soccer shoes for both boys (we've tried 5 stores with luck for only one boy and they were $30 :scared1:), $40 Target, $16 Walmart (because Target didn't carry everything I needed), $13 Dick's Sporting Goods (a sock indulgence), $29 Lands' End clearance for next winter for the boys and $34 Staples for things for school (I refuse to function any longer without working staplers and tape dispensers and there's no money in the school's budget. I hate the fact that I got everyone's broken leftovers -- including desks and chairs for the students -- when I transferred to this school.). Finally, $8 dinner out (the rest was a gc) after the headaches of the day.
1/16: :cool1:
1/17: $12 lunch (owed to my friend still though!:lmao:), $76 groceries, ? Walmart (as I had to call DH and give him the list to get the things on his way home tonight!)
1/18: $14 Lands' End (great clearance right now -- this is for a $50 rain jacket with a zip in liner for DS5!)
1/19: This is technically a no buy day -- we spent $6 at the craft store and $17 on dinner but it was all gc money. I'm not counting it as a no buy day, though.

Hi, everyone! Thanks again for the encouraging words! My B.A. is in drama/English literature (double music minor in piano and voice) - SO practical, LOL! I also have an M.A. in Theater. I'm a playwright.

$30.59 on groceries last night and DH also filled up his gas tank for $31.31. We have $41.58 left to spend on groceries this month and $7.88 on gas IF I make it. As I said, this is a test month as it's my first month trying this, so we'll see if we need to tweak anything. DH gets paid tomorrow and he gets his check every OTHER Friday.

Today looks like it should finally be no-buy day #4! :thumbsup2 I was planning to go to a movie with a friend (which I NEVER get to do) but that is postponed till Tuesday. I've decided to work on organizing my coupons and DD has a music class and a playdate later (busy busy!)

I just got DD down for a rare nap so I need to boogie while she's not clamoring to be held or nursed! ;)

BigMama67, I hope you got the job. :-)

Another 0 day. I'm very pleased! My grocery total is very low. Part of that is because I had a huge meat stockpile, which we are working through, and also DH grabbed a few things out of his walking around money. I don't count what he spends out of that, so my grocery budget is looking quite good. The problem is after months like this, I tend to have to spend a lot the next month. I'm working on a happy medium.

I also compared what I wrote here to what happened in my checking account, and realized that I forget to count $100 . I gave it to DD to give to her friend from Disney that got us a very cheap rate on our hotel. So I added that in to my total spending. Gotta be honest!

Went back to school today, with a firm "Do NOT go into the grocery store today." to DH. (He stayed home, and finally got the Christmas tree into the box. Now....how long before it hits the basement? :lmao: ) The kids were glad to see me, and are still looking for my voice OR the frog in my throat. Mind you, I did manage a bit of volume right at the end of the day. :rolleyes1 Gotta love those last 15 minutes as everyone is getting everything done and put away! On the budget side....another $0 day. Only ONE more, and I will have made my goal.

Jan. 1: $0
Jan. 2: $0
Jan. 3: $0
Jan. 4: gas $46; groceries $97; postage for registered letter to Cairo $15
Jan. 5: DH hit up the pharmacy for some iron tabs...$7
Jan. 6: $0
Jan. 7: DH hit up the local grocery. Didn't spend much but it was $12
Jan. 8: I did a Costco run for school. DS bought a pair of jeans ($100 :scared1: ), but not my money. ;) I did spend $40 on Flavour-Seal rolls  but it is the first I've bought since I've had the thing. Also some chips and a magazine.....total $50 for me. I wasn't thinking, though. I need to go BACK to Costco tomorrow to pick up my ColdFX. So tomorrow will not be $0 either. :sad2: Oh, and DH put gas in the car. Goodbye $41
Jan. 9: Costco...got vitamins, ColdFX, more vitamins, chips and salsa $110. DH drove DS into the city, and...thoughtfully....bought some soup for my cold. $7
Jan 10: $0
Jan 11: DH does grocery shopping.....While he spent $66, we had a gift card for $50, so we really only spent $16
Jan 12: There's that gas again! $36 And, DH bought the new winter tires that the car needed....another $421 (which includes 1 can of Pringles  . Luckily, my mom gave us money for Christmas that will cover that expense.)
Jan 13: $0
Jan 14: $0
Jan 15: Costco $42 gas (again!) $43
Jan 16: prediction: $35 for brunch tip/gas/Timmies to get there (It's a theatre brunch [Joseph! And the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat--one of my fav's] and the tickets were paid for last year--just the tip today :D ) Actual $25
Jan 17: $0
Jan 18: DH's usual shopping was limited to $30
Jan 19: DH picked up the green tea that the store didn't have last night....$21....either that was REALLY expensive tea, or he bought more than the tea ;) He DOES like to shop! Also, another registered letter to DD in Egypt $13; gas $28 (added this-DH gave me the receipt this morning)
Jan 20: $0
