January 8, 2011 - 7 Night Western Caribbean Sailing

So is a GTY cabin mean I will get at least a category 5? I don't really mind what I get as long as it has a balcony!

Just recently found the forum.

My DW, Eileen, and I will be taking the 7-day Western Caribbean cruise on 8 Jan. This will be in celebration of my retirement from the Federal Government the week before

This will be our first Disney cruise, and her first ocean cruise, and her first trip to the Caribbean (I spent some time in both the Caribbean and the Mediterrean in the Navy and Marines). We have made two river cruises on the Delta Queen and American Queen so we are not entirely new to cruising.

I would really liketo do a riverboat cruise.

In 2019 (yes I plan ahead) my husband and I will be doing a trip to celebrate our 25th anniversary - without kids.

We will be doing an Alaskian cruise, leaving our luggage with a friend in Delaware and doing a motor bike ride for 10 days from DC up to Niagra Falls and New York state and then hiring a car and driving right down through the South after a visit to the Mopar Nats and ending with 3 weeks in WDW. We actually eloped and got married at the Orlando Couty Courthouse in 1994 so I have always told my husband that if he wants a divorce he has to take me back to WDW or it won't be legal!

Welcome Aboard Bill..look forward to meeting you!..
Sandie a GTY cabin just means they have not sorted out who goes where yet...you will get whatever Category you reserved ( or better) as soon as they figure it all out your cabin number will show up in your reservation. SOmetimes its very soon and other times it's not until the last minute.

I'd love to make another riverboat cruise! We took the Delta Queen down the Mississippi from Memphis to New Orleans (the summer before Katrina hit), and the American Queen down the Ohio. The DQ is the smallest, and most intimate (only about 200 passengers and about 180 crew). Everyone knows everyone within a day or so

Unfortunately, both boats have been decommissioned and the company sold. However, the Queen of the West travels the Columbia between Oregon and Washington. I haven't been on her yet but its on my "to do" list. Friends say she isn't the DQ, which had a certain charm, but was comparable to the AQ or the Mississippi Queen.

I found the river cruises to be most relaxing. You could sit on deck with a drink and book, watch the riverbank go by - and people on shore and on passing boats would always wave. The shore excursions on the Mississippi were great, but when we were on the Ohio we opted to just explore the small towns we docked at. We only had the one dining room, but the food was outstanding and the servers were even better. We felt like the family was breaking up when we finally disembarked.

Now, I'm looking forward to cruising on the Magic.

Has anyone pre-purchased (either for this cruise or previously) from the gifts and amenities options? Since it is our honeymoon, a few family members are asking, so we are considering: Romantic Encounter ($99), Bon Voyage ($25-$35) and Rain Forest 1-Day Pass ($15). We also mentioned The Perfect Gift..I have read some great reviews about it and really liked what I saw on their webpage.

Any one have any recommendations (or warnings!) or any suggestions??

Kate, you should sign up for a Disney Honeymoon registry.

Welcome Bill!

Sandy a GTY means you will get atleast the cat. you booked.

I got my wedding flowers (well our dad's and Mom's coursages and my hair flowers) from a Perfect Gift and they were great!

Thanks for the idea Goldeelox9! It's also good to know that you got flowers there and were happy with them... it's nice hearing stuff like that first hand!!!

I'm glad that we will be cruising with such fun sounding people! I have already learned a lot from this thread. I just booked this cruise today. It works well with the college break schedule and hopefully the airfares will be lower than the Christmas/New Years period. There are four of us: my Dear Mother, Stepfather, Nephew (21 and in college) and myself. We have two staterooms on Deck 6. We have cruised with Disney twice before: the last time was the DVC Members Cruise in 2008. This will be our first 7 night cruise though.

I have always been jealous of cruisers with their FEs and decorated cabin doors, so please sign us up for the FEs. We will be in 6551 and 6550. Thanks-- and looking forward to getting to know everyone better on the boards.

Mr. Potts (David)

I know our cabin number now - it is 6118. It is right in front of the elevators which I am happy about - less chance the kids will get lost!

Is it likely to change again?

Sandie

p.s I am getting very excited!!!!

Ok...for those of you who have cruised Disney before - have you brought alcohol on with you? One of the things that actually persuaded my fiancé to do a Disney cruise - as he isn't the Disney fanatic I am..lol.. - was that we read how you can bring alcohol (as well as water and soda) on as long as it is in your carry on. Has anyone done this? Since we are flying down and don’t want to worry about packing in our luggage, we are planning on renting a car from the airport to the port and stopping at some place that sells alcohol on the way. We are not huge drinkers, but figured since it was our honeymoon we should enjoy and loosen up..lol.. :cool1:

We brought lots of booze on our wedding cruise! One of my guests had a whole little suite case filled with 2 cases of beer! No one ever blinked an eye when they exrayed out bags. I have taken drinks on the past 3 cruises. Easy Peasy.

Mr Potts I added you to the FE list!!!!

Hello fellow cruisers, I and my family will be joining you for the Jan 8 cruise. Donella (me) 35 Geoff (dh)36 Logan (ds) 4 and Jordan dd (23months at cruise time) Also MIL Kathy will be in the cabin next door.
This is a special trip for us in a couple of different ways. First of all Dh and I met on the Magic on a fall (supposed to be western got changed due to hurricane) cruise in 2002. This is kind of a reunion with the ship that brought two people together originally living over 500 miles apart. Second, it will be the first cruise for both of our children so exciting in many ways.
I think we might like to get involved in the FE thing and would love to find out more info (will probably check out the link from pp). I know I will be doing door decorations no matter how goofy my dh thinks they are  I'm not sure how many Dis events I will be able to attend but would like to do maybe a couple especially while out at sea.
Please feel free to pelt me with any  for the FE.

PS Now I can quit being a stalker (although I've only been looking today):rotfl2:

oops I just realized that DH and I will both be a year older at time of cruise. AHHHHH 40 is fast approaching.:sad2:

I've seen this discusson the the General Forum, but I thought I'd ask here to be more specific to our cruise.

While I dislike have to wear a tie at work (it's required), I do like to dress up for formal occasions. I was wondering just how formal everyone is planning to be on the formal and semi-formal nights on our cruise in January.

My DW wants me to wear a tux, but I'm thinking about wearing a kilt (which I love wearing!), suitably dressed up for formal night and dressed down for the semi-formal night.

Does anyone else look forward to dressing up?

I Love:love:the dressing up part. My first cruise I was a farm working girl and had never been to or seen anything so fancy in my life. It was so fun to dress up and pretend to be royalty.
I don't remember my husband wearing a tux. I think he and the guys just wore nice suits. I did however see ladies in full ball gown dripping in diamonds on the arms of gentlemen in tuxes. I guess it's up to you. As long as you don't dress in beachwear I'm sure they will let you in.:thumbsup2
