January 8, 2005 Magic Cruise - Let's Get Ready to Cruise!

Hey everyone! I'm getting excited but not yet into the full planning mode yet. My SIL and her family will leave my house today and MIL will leave tomorrow. Once I get my house back to myself and in somewhat order, I will be focusing on the cruise. I'm going to make some door magnets and not too sure what else.
Stacey, I thought I would try to answer your questions to the best of my ability. I've only been on DCL once but have been on 4 other cruises.

1. What suggestions do you have for the carry on bags? Anything that you thought of "after the fact" that you'll be sure to remember this time? One thing we have learned from cruising is not to overpack. Now, this is easy for me being a flight attendant, I do this all of the time. But some say a good rule of thumb is to pack and then take out half of it. In our carry on bag we will have bathing suits, all medications, jewelry, wine, extra shorts and shirt, sunscreen, camera's and door decorations. That is all coming to mind right now but I'm sure I'll think of more. A few things that I don't leave home without packing is over the door shoe holder, extension cord, hair dryer, strip plug, highlighters, post it notes, all of the Dis info that I have printed out, etc.

2. Anyone know if the Magic is still doing the Tropicalli night? I thought I heard that it was phased out/replaced with a Pirate night. I believe we are doing pirate night but not too confidant. Anyone else know for sure?

3. Has anyone ever used "safe sea" sunscreen? It was recommended in the Passporter as it has an anti-stinging agent to keep away stinging sea creatures. I have never used this but intended to bring some myself. I'm glad you reminded me of this. Does anyone know where to purchase this stuff?

4. I was looking over the options for reservations that need to be made the first day and am really torn on whether or not to plan a visit to Palo? Is it better to schedule later in the week? Since this is our first DC, I want to be sure that we experience the regular restaurants --or is there one worth skipping for Palo? We personally try not to schedule Palo during the first 3 nights so we can enjoy each restuarant at least once. Especially the first night at Animator's.

5. I read about decorations that you can bring to decorate your state room door? I'm guessing, from what I've read, that the doors are magnetic. Anyone ever done this? What decorations did you put up? Yes, the doors are magnetic. No problem there. My DF that is traveling w/ us will be bringing b/day decorations for her DS. He turns 5 on Thur. during the cruise. I read somewhere you can ask your stateroom host to hang them for you. I'd just give them some $ on the spot.

6. Has anyone done the dolphin/sting ray excursion? We're signed up for this, but just wondering what your thoughts are on this. DH and I have done this on another cruise while in Grand Cayman. We loved it. Maybe someone else has experience w/ this excursion on the Eastern cruise.

Lisa, I've never put a DIS meet together before but will try. Brack, let me know what you think.

ANymore old people on the cruise?

It depends on how old you consider old. My MIL will be 73 during the cruise. I am 52 (but very young at heart!) :cool1:

I believe that 'stinging sea creatures' are not a problem at this time of year. It is a seasonal problem for a different time of year.

Yet another great reason for sailing in January!

Staci: We drove thru your town last night and waved. We head back home tomorrow and will wave again.

We've had meets in the past on Sunday on deck 9 over the Mickey pool. It has lots of room, plenty of good light for a good picture and the rear stack for a background. Let me know what everyone wants. I'll bring a camera. :grouphug:

Stacey "S".

This is our 5th DCL cruise. We have never gone to Palo's for dinner because we wanted to be at all the dinners with our new found friends. The night dinners are all great.

We have done Palo's for brunch and highly recommend that.

This is really brack but I am in TX at my DS's home so I registered him for DisBoard and then started him on this thread. He and his DW are joining us on the cruise. When he returns from the store I'll show him what I did.

THat's OLD! But good to hear there are more of us. I see that you're an amatuer photographer! And your "new" address has "Volleyball is Life". 2 very high interests of mine! Does anyone really play volleyball on the ship?

Woah, cool! Congratulations!

(Jealous? I never said I was jealous? Why would you think I was jealous? LOL.)

Can anyone tell me the best way to get to Coki Beach on St. Thomas.....or maybe offer alternative beach options. We're going it alone....no Disney excursions. Has anyone been looking at the 15 day forecast on Accuweather? It fluctuates by almost 10 degress each day!!!! It's driving me crazy. :earboy2: ....so many decisions...shorts on embarkation day or capris :charac2: ....Life is pretty good when this is the toughest decision you have to make.

God Bless the people of Asia :rose:

Penny

OK--I will admit I am jealous about the upgrade..and am still waiting on docs! I guess as long as we're on board for sail away who cares.

Sorry.........I didnt want to make anyone jealous just wanted to share the good news. I would be freaking out if I didnt have our docs by now. Hopefully you will have them tomorrow.

Penny, This was sent to me from NYDISNEYMOM. I asked her the same question.

We got off the ship and walked to the taxis. Make sure you ASK how much it is before you get in the cab. Apparently some people were told that kids are half price, others weren't and the drivers weren't happy. My DH wasn't budging, though, we paid $21 to get to Coki.

Remember, they drive on the left in St. Thomas, which is pretty scary until you get used to seeing trucks and cars cutting right across in front of you. The island is very hilly and we liked it much more than St. Maarten. We passed several very nice resort areas, some people in the cab got off at Sapphire Beach, which is not just a beach, it's a hotel/resort! It looked beautiful. I'm sure they had a great day!

We got to Coki, which was smaller than I expected, but it was still beautiful. There's a little truck right on the beach where you rent snorkel gear if you don't have any, as well as chairs, umbrellas and there's lockers for rent also. We rented one chair, one umbrella and vests for all of us -- the vests make snorkeling much easier, you just float along the top of the water.

We were also given four milk bone dog treats to feed the fish with! this was pretty funny...but it works!! we snorkeled for probably two hours. the water was warm, the beach wasn't crowded -- you can get a great smoothie from the little truck right on the beach, which also sells food, but I couldn't really see eating a hamburger from a truck.

After snorkeling we walked over to Coral World. There is an area to eat right outside of CW, as well as one inside CW. They both sell the same exact food, same prices, so it doesn't matter which one you choose. (hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, salads, etc.)

I think it cost about $50 for two kids and two adults to get into CW. (okay...we're on vacation, but it seemed like a lot to me for what we did there.) The kids were more excited by the iguanas running around everywhere than the fish!! LOL!

It's a cool place, if you or the kids like tropical fish, turtles, sting rays, etc. We spent a little more than an hour here, including the gift shop.

There were plenty of cabs there at CW ready to take you back. Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to get to the port, though. If there are several cruise ships docked, they're all leaving around the same time...it adds up to lots and lots of TRAFFIC. We left CW around 2:00, it took us about 45 minutes to get back to the ship. After 3:00 it only gets worse!

Chris, glad you got your docs. It is a great feeling huh? Awesome that you got an upgrade. The rest of us can only wish.

Staci,

So, are you going to go ahead and go to Coki Beach? That Sapphire Beach sounds pretty good too if we could have access to it. Anybody got any suggestions?

Penny
