January 2010 Ticket Price Increase

If they increase prices again, I know a lot of people who will not be returning to WDW. :confused3

I guess they have to pay for the Fantasyland expansion somehow......We're in a depression, unemployement at a 26 year high.... yeah huge price increase is the right thing to do.........:sad2:

We are far from a depression, recession, severe yes, but far away from a depression.

Unlike the DVC price increases, which I agree with, increasing prices on items like park tickets is a rather poor decision.

I seriously doubt that. We go on a regular basis, and we have found that there are more people going to WDW then ever.

Trust me, attendance is down (WDW has a way of making it look busy) and spending is way down. And for those who think we are not in a depression, over 10% unemployed officially and even more that are unofficial. Price wars and business closing all over is a depression. :sad2:

I will agree with you on the people not spending money thing while they are in the stores, but the bodies ARE there. We go on a regular basis because of our proximity to WDW, and really, there are a LOT of people there. AND they are filling the restaurants. And they ARE on the rides and in the pavilions, which are also doing business as usual. And the monorails and buses are loaded. So, I guess about the only thing we agree on is that folks are not buying merchandise. Don't know what this "way" Disney supposedly has of making things "look" busy, but they must be doing a darn good job of it, because we have to wait and wait to get on the rides. Just speaking from personal experiences. We are going again in about a week, and again in December, then once more in January, and we fully expect to see the usual crowds.
I just calls 'em as I sees 'em................

PS: While things are bad, we are not in a depression.

1st- There are technical definitions for what a depression and recession are. We never got close to a depression and when the next quarterly numbers come out, we'll probably be out of the recession. That being said, I sure as heck am depressed about the state of the economy.
2nd- If you look at the numbers that Disney releases, you'll see that attendance is holding pretty steady. The problem they are having is that they have conditioned people to expect discounts. Now people will only go for free dining or the other free day discount programs. The per capita spending is way down. When you look at what each person is spending when you add up hotel, food, tickets, merchandice, that number is down drasticly. That is what is causing problems for their bottom line.

A key indicator in this is that Orange County has reported that income from the transient lodging (hotel bed) tax is down 15% from last year. Where the normal Sales Tax is 6.5%, the lodging tax is 6.0% for a total of 12.5% (13.0% in Osceola County) paid on each room. So although the rooms may be sold, the rates are down.

"Considered a rare and extreme form of recession, a depression is characterized by its length, and by abnormal increases in unemployment, falls in the availability of credit, shrinking output and investment, numerous bankruptcies, reduced amounts of trade and commerce, as well as highly volatile relative currency value fluctuations, mostly devaluations. Price deflation, financial crisis and bank failures are also common elements of a depression." Wikipedia

I hate to be a pessimist, but I can't seem to find anything in the above statement that ISN'T happening now. The saying goes “A recession is when your neighbor loses his job; a depression is when you lose yours.” Ronald Reagan.

The numbers you quote are from the general tax, not specifically the WDW numbers, correct?

That is correct. It is the collections within Orange County of the short-term lodging tax, which is the 6.0% component of the 12.5% combined Sales and Lodging taxes. And it is County-wide, not just Disney.

I've talked to alot of CM's and in all honesty I think some of them just make junk up as it comes to their mind. In General CM's (Including myself) are pretty low on the information food chain.

Sure we get wind of things from time to time but in general management do a pretty good job of keeping things secret and what we usually find out isnt of any major importance
