Our first day was a half day so it's all over. She is now excitedly talking to my MIL on the phone giving her all the details. We had taken her to McD's after school so we already heard it all. I have a question about school, seeing as a lot of us are in the same boat. When do you plan on letting their teachers know that they will be missing school? DD7 will miss a whole week. Last time we went, it was no biggie but that was kindergarten. Just curious as to what everyone else does. Hope all your kids had great days, too!!

Last year I gave the teacher notice at our first parent teacher conference. All I said was that sometime in Jan we would be taking Morgan out of school for about a week for our family vacation. We are very lucky that we live a very small village & her teachers know that I have my own business that goes off tourism. So we have to go when the season is off. I reminded them again at the first of the year. Our school makes the kids do their work before they leave & turn it in early. She had all her work done & turned in 2 days before we left.

We actually have to fill out a request for an "Educational Excused Absence" and have it approved before they are allowed out of school. I have to fill it out and explain all the educational aspects of WDW. I usually do it about 2 months before the trip. Not sure how I am going to pull it off this year being that the trip is a surprise for the kids. . . I wouldn't want one of their teachers to let it slip before Christmas. I will probably talk to the school secretary and see if she thinks sending in the request after Christmas vacation would be enough time. That would only be about 2-3 weeks before we leave though.

WOW ! Am I the only one who is not sad about the kids starting back to school? This was me today - - whenI dropped my dd7 off for only a morning of Grade 2! This will be me tomorrow when I drop both off for a full day -

I guess our school system is a bit different up here - my dd5 did 2 full days of Junior Kindergarten last yeart and will do 3 full days of Senior Kindergarten this year!

Well, since I haven't been to Disney World since 1994, there are so many new and improved rides I will be experiencing, but my fave back then was definitely POTC!

I'm with you on getting in shape. I started working out last week and was so sore I could barely walk! I used to work out 5 days a week, but after DD was born I totally got out of the swing of things. Disney is great motivation!

I have no kids so I can't relate to everyone's sadness or happiness. [One thing, Shelly, about both boys being in school is that you can plan your trip without worrying that little eyes will see you!]

I have never been to WDW so I can't answer the QOTD [but I am taking notes so that I will ride everyone's favorite - hopefully many times].

But I can understand the need to get into shape! Hot weather usually keeps me indoors so I've been keeping my walks as short as possible. I have a five month plan to add to my walking regimen, little by little, as it gets cooler, so WDW won't be such a shock to my poor flabby little feet. My puppy will love it!

I actually asked my DDs' teachers' opinions last spring before we committed to the trip, but I still would have taken them out, even if the teachers didn't want me to. DDs go to a private school, and I figure if I pay tuition for them to be there, I have the right to take them out when I want to.

The funny thing is that our friends are going the same week we are, and their kids have the same teachers as mine, so the teachers will have to prepare double early assignments. But their classrooms will be more quiet, too!

Welcome Swittner! I love POFQ!!! It's a lovely place and we really enjoyed the size of it (or lack thereof).

How were the crowds in Jan. last year? This is my first January experience.

We went from Jan 4-8 2006. I remember the crowds not being to overwhelming, wait time for rides were approx 45 minutes (mid day)

We went this past May for 3 days 2 nights and the wait time was next to nothing, it was unreal. We went on every ride (except Soarin') twice, I could not believe it.

Nevertheless, I think you'll find Disney enjoyable in Jan.

Well, my DDs survived their first day just fine, but man! They are SO crabby! It must have been stressful.

Okay, so how weird am I?!!

I don't have any little peanuts to haul off to school today. Instead, i'm extremely sad as it is the first time I have NOT gone to school! It's really hitting me... After 8 years of college, I really am done. No more books, no more papers, no more exams. It's amazing, when your in school, all you want to do is finish. Now that i'm out of school, all I want to do is go back!!!!!!!!!!!!

My kids are home as well. DS6 says he does not like 1st grade. It's too long and he missed me. I was afraid of that. Him and I are rarely apart.

Hopefully he will adjust in a few days.

Oh, and I walked on my treadmill today for the first time in forever! Remember weeks ago when I said I was going to start walking? Well, I did...today.

And now on to Disney talk.... let's have a question of the day.....

What is your ULTIMATE, FAVORITE, MUST-DO RIDE at Disney World?

I kind of have 2 - The TTA (hee, I think it stems from all my old trips being in the hot summer and that being a cool wait-free ride) and the Haunted Mansion. I love that ride, despite my last time on it thinking it was in SERIOUS need of an overhaul.

Yeah, I kinda felt that way too. Except I went "YAY! DONE WITH SCHOOL!" and then immediately missed it. Shortly after that, I've ended up in jobs that have me on or very near college campuses which has been great. There's a certain love of life that I find academia has about it - the students, the faculty... even when bitter and worn down, it's still a lot of fun for me. Occasionally (like today), when I think I can't take it anymore, I realize that yeah, I wouldn't do it any other way.
