Hello all, I have been getting info off of this site for some time now and decided it was time to loose my anounimty...Spell? :happytv: Anyway me my DW, DD9, DS, DB, and DM are all going in Jan. We are doing the Disney Cruise lines land and sea package. We will be at WDW POFQ 22-25 Jan and then take a 4 day cruise to Nassau and Castaway Cay. Me and my DD9 are very excited to be going, I haven't been to WDW since 1985:mad: and of course my DW and DD9 have never been. Anyway you can add me to the list of SnowBirds. Glad to be on board:dance3:

It is nice to post on a thread "where everybody knows your name" so to speak, a la Cheers. :lmao:

I'd love to do the cruise some day- I've heard it's fab! Welcome to the Snowbirds. :cool1:

Hey Everyone!

I am getting so excited about the trip; 6 months and 7 days!

I wanted to make reservations now but my agent said we need to wait till the packages come out. Is this true? I see so many of you making reservations already; it kinda makes me nervous. I'm just so ready to start getting the ball rolling!

It's true the packages aren't out, but you can make reservations for your lodging. It's also possible to make advance dining reservations 180 days before your stay once you've booked your room. I've done all that and now am waiting to buy our park tickets and dining plan.

Beginning or end?

Okay, after much discussion we have now decided to leave on the same day. BUT, we were going to leave very late and not arrive in Orlando until about 8:45pm, and have decided for DH to just take that day off so we can catch an early morning flight! So basically we are gaining an extra day without leaving a day sooner!
You lucky dog! :lmao:

I wish we could stay longer but the kids must get back to school- they're missing 3 days, but I don't feel comfortable having them miss any more than that.

We always take the kids out for 5 days. I feel a little guilty about it, but they rarely ever miss any other days the whole school year. Plus they are still in elementary school, so I might as well do it now! As long as their grades are good that is!
We are going Jan 17th-24th. I can't wait. We are staying at SSR as brand new DVC members. It will be our first trip "home." This will also be our first real stay in January (we have stayed through Jan 3rd for a Christmas trp). I have heard wonderful things about WDW during this time of year so I am excited about going. Now how to be patient for 188 more days???:confused3

Congrats on your first DVC trip! How exciting!! Welcome to the Snowbirds!

Welcome Home! SSR is our "Home" resort! We've had great stays there. This trip will be our first to BWV.

We usually take our kids out of school for a couple of days in late September for a trip to the coast- coast of Texas that is- so it'll add up to about 5 days for the whole year. It's definitely not as big of a deal in elementary school. My oldest started middle school last year and she missed those September days and it wasn't an issue. She is a straight A student so that definitely helps. It's great motivation to keep those grades up as well! :thumbsup2

No ressies yet, but we're thinking ASMo, or POP.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to keep it a secret right up until we get on the plane......just don't think we can pull that one off! Maybe xmas morning, though!

I am planning to/trying to keep our January trip a secret from the kids too! My plan is to wrap up a huge box and put it under the Christmas tree and inside will be a tiny note saying something like - WE'RE GOING TO DISNEY IN 27 DAYS!!!!! :santa:

I'm hoping DS9 doesn't catch on before then. It's going to be hard!

I keep telling them that it doen't look like we will make it back to WDW until 2010! :lmao:

Yeah, I'm not sure what our school's policy is on "educational excused absence" trips once they hit middle school. I know in May my 3rd grader had SO MUCH make up work that it was ridiculous! I can't imagine what they will have in 7th grade. :scared1:

I guess I can't use the- "you have to have all A's & B's to be able to go to Disney" this time since I am keeping the trip a secret! :rotfl:

Congratulations about DVC! How exciting! It seems like people on the DIS are buying DVC left and right. Did you buy SSR or AKV? We're renting points and staying at AKV for our trip (1/21-1/28), but it's our first trip ever. I'm having a really hard time being patient, too!

DH wanted to buy for years now but I finally caved after our tour last March. We bought in at AKV becuase it is DS's favorite resort and we plan on giving it to him when he completes college and has a stable job that can afford the maintance fees. Let me know how you like AKV we aren't staying there til Christmas 2009.

Our school district has a form right on the website to fill out and send in to "request" time off. It notes that school work will be required and expected to be done during the time off. The majority of the folks in the district are pretty well-off, so I expect they take kids out for any number of trips - winter trips to islands, skiing - that sort of thing.

My son has Autism Spectrum Disorder, so a community education experience is actually part of his IEP and will be very good for him. That will be the primary reason we give for taking his little sister out, too. I've already warned her about schoolwork. She'll be in second grade and she does exceedingly well in school, so I feel confident she'll be okay.

BUT, this is the only time we'll do it for this long (9 days out of school). In the future, we'll probably do 5 or 4, but we'll always do it in Jan-Feb timeframe. I can't take the heat, and their Dad has a heart condition. It's not real serious, but he shouldn't put too much strain on it, and WDW in the summer means excessive heat, humidity, etc. that won't be healthy for him.

It is really hard!!! I keep sneaking on here when they're busy & minimizing really quickly when they walk by....and last night I bought the UG on the sly while dh had them in pottery barn and I was terrified they would try & look in the bag....I just know I'm gonna let it slip sometime by accident!!

I'm a teacher myself......I'm taking my 2 girls AND *myself* out of school for 5 days.....with NO GUILT.:woohoo:

Hello to all of the newest Snowbirds :wave2:

This thread is HUGE :)
Well, DH and I still haven't decided on which ddp to do. In the morning we agree and on the basic and by bedtime we've decided on deluxe, we're just gutless flip-floppers  I need to make a countdown calendar for DS to count down days till WDW! He's asked me to do 4 times already.

Got a call this morning that my grandfather had a major heart attack yesterday in the parking lot of the grocery store while he was in the car (alone) and they had to break the windows to get him out, b/c the automatic door locks were still on, he's in a coma and on life support, the dr's say its not hopeful, they don't want to turn off any life support until his children get to see him. So they could call at any moment, and we're just waiting for more news :(

Hello to all the new additions to the Jan 2009 snowbirds.

I know this will make time pass.

SplashMtnCrew- our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
