Janet and Justin-Did you See what I just Saw???

Going to try real hard here to not get on my soapbox, but....

The Superbowl has "historically" been a family event. I have watched it since SB IX when my beloved Steelers won their first. The entertainment at halftime has "historically" been geared towards all ages (anybody remember the 3-D show where we had to run out and get our glasses?). The SB is shown on regular TV, not cable, and during a family hour. The incident happened at dinnertime on the West Coast and early enough on the East Coast when many impressionable puberty-stricken kids are not in bed quite yet.

So, I don't think it's reasonable to say that parents should have known, should have been better informed, etc. If this was a cable event, maybe....if it was being shown later at night, maybe...if it was on MTV, HBO, etc., definitely. Parents typically don't do research on traditionally "clean" events like the SB half-time show. I wouldn't expect PBS to start showing condom commercials during Sesame Street because sex is a fact of life.

But we'll be smarter next time, that's for sure. One thing they've guaranteed is that more folks in the future will tune out of the SB half-time show and into more "family-friendly" entertainment. When the advertising dollars carry less weight because we can't trust them to use good judgement, maybe the powers that be will know that America is looking for less controversial performances.

Looks like 'Up with People' may be making a comeback.
;) :teeth:

hey, wasn't that willyj's group? ;) :p :teeth:

A star, A star...dancing in the night.

Sorry. :earseek:

Anyway. Totally on purpose. totally uncalled for. Totally yuck. :(

I think we have FCC regulations for this stuff for a reason!!!! A Prime time national network has a responsibility(legally and morally) to know exactly what is being broadcast on THEIR network. I find it hard to believe that people have no problem with this!!! If we let this go just think what the next escapade will be. Just because we "see" it all the time doesn't make it right. Its time that America start standing up for what we want to see and give up this "Well, its all over so just let it go" attitude.

Does anyone have a TV Guide from last week? THe SUper Bowl should be rated in that. Also- there is a national TV Ratings SYstem that works with a V-Chip. Anyone have one? I'd like to know what they rated the Super Bowl. I'll bet it was a General rating.

I'd like to think that this event was an accident but accident or not there is plenty of outrage directed
at everyone involved, rightly so. All 3 of our local news channels offered a censored version. The entertainment news reports all showed the incident. I don't think thats necessary, at all. And we should let these stations know that we don't want these things shown. We let things like this slide, as in the Madonna kiss, and it goes one step further. Are there any rules left?

I must say I was wrong about one thing...just saw a close up of the picture and that's defintely NOT a pasty... but from afar there is no way you could tell that.

Not that it changes my mind any...

I haven't read all the replies.... but I want to say that what I find the most offensive is Justin and Janet trying to say it was a "costume malfunction" Don't insult the intelligence of the public.... you did it, you MEANT to do it, you PLANNED to do it and everyone is talking about it today so I'm sure you are GLAD you did it:rolleyes: What's he trying to do- top the Britney/Madonna kiss?? Good Grief- save it for your party buddies.

I agree!!! It was so obvious it was planned but they just didn't figure on all the outrage so now they are making up all these storiesabout it beoing an accident.Yeah right.

They re-played it on our local news tonight and it was obviously an accident. I found this on msn.com:

Jackson's official Web site was bombarded with angry postings. Her spokeswoman, Jennifer Holiner, said a red lace garment was supposed to remain when Timberlake tore off the outer covering.

If you look at the pictures on the drudge report you will see it wasn't a pastie she had. It was body jewlery. There was nothing actually covering the nipple. Judging by her reaction right afterwards, it was intentional for Justin to rip off a part of her costume just not the whole thing. Hopefully now we can put this to rest and go back to our regularly scheduled lives.

Headline News is now carrying a quote from Janet in which she admits it was PLANNED after the last rehearsal and that MTV did not know.

I found it about as shocking as the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition which has bascially become soft core porn.

I guess if it's good enough for the leading Sport Magazine it's good enough for the super bowl.

Actually I do not understand why everyone including the NFL and players are not outraged that security did not prevent the streaker from getting on the field. In this day and age of terrorism, I would think that would be of great concern than Janet's breast.

Our news tonight says Janet confirmed that it was planned. I thought so all along.

Right, no one here has a life...
Yes it was planned to rip off the outer cup...that's why the snaps are there. It just wasn't planned to rip off the lace cup underneath.

Sam, Sam, Sam. Come on now.

I have read most of this thread. Thankfully I was spared Janet's nipple showing. As I knew who kid Rock and Nelly were and had no interest in them what so ever. The arguement is silly. The simple fact is, what they did was against FCC rules. End story. If it was ok. Noone would be aplogizing, and no fines would be inquestion.
On that basis I would have thought the superbowl would be appropriate for my 9 year old son.
No moral debate needed,
It is simple there are FCC rules and they need to be followed, and as the consumers of the little black box in our homes we have the right to expect them to be.

But some things should be safe to watch with your kids. You can't change the channel and erase it from your mind once it was seen. Family events should be family events, or you should be warned ahead otherwise. I don't expect to go to Disney and see the prince rip off Cinderellas clothes and be told, "if you don't like it, don't come". If this happened on an MTV concert or Howard Stern, I would expect it, but not on family oriented television.

I agree. As Michael Powell, the FCC Commissioner, said this morning on the CBS Morning Show, family events should be save to watch on television.

Sam, come on now. By the way, how do you know there were snaps on the costume? How do you know that it was planned to keep something on underneath? How do you know that it was lace? Were you in on this stunt?

The Superbowl is a family oriented event, isn't it? Was this stunt appropriated?

Even if this is true that he was just supposed to rip off the black part and leave the red, what are the changes of that happening? In that split second he had to grab and distinguish between the black leather (I think it was) and the red lace, it was almost impossible for him to just grab onto the black part and pull just that off. If this is what they wanted to happen she should have worn a red lacy top underneath, not just that little piece of red material.
