Janet and Justin-Did you See what I just Saw???

If you don't like what your watching change it to something else or turn it off. It's not that hard. No is holding you down and holding your eyes open so you have to watch it. You watch it or you don't. Your not forced to do anything. And if you really have given you kids morals then i doubt they'll feel like they have to do this kinda of thing to get people to look at them. Don't sale them short they may just suprise you.

I don't know if this makes any difference but Janet was NOT wearing a pasty. Check out the drudge report to see a blown up picture if you have the stomach for it. She was wearing an item of jewelry complete with piercing (OUCH!). Maybe she wears this jewelry regularly.

I personally think it was staged but not by CBS or the NFL. How much was supposed to be exposed is up for discussion but the act itself was certainly staged. And I don't consider it an act of violence.

Unfortunately nothing shocks me anymore. It was sad, classless, tasteless, etc. but not shocking. anything to get people talking about them. The FCC is planning an investigation. Maybe they will get fined like Howard Stern and others have been. Maybe that will help!!

But some things should be safe to watch with your kids. You can't change the channel and erase it from your mind once it was seen. Family events should be family events, or you should be warned ahead otherwise. I don't expect to go to Disney and see the prince rip off Cinderellas clothes and be told, "if you don't like it, don't come". If this happened on an MTV concert or Howard Stern, I would expect it, but not on family oriented television.

OK, c'mon now -- does anyone really think a show with kid rock and nelly is a family event? have you ever heard any of their music before?

Exaxctly.

The point being that they should't have been on there to begin with, as it was a family event. Even with that said, at least they didn't go to the depths that Justin and Janet did. Whatever artist goes out there, they should and many do refine their music for that group. Even artists like pink can go on Nickelodion and not use the language they do in their songs, substituting words or eliminating lyrics.

EXACTLY!!! If you watched the first half of the superbowl you KNEW who was performing, it was said before just about every commercial......None of the singers Beyonce included are family oriented....I'm sorry but thats a cop-out......once again when the very very first part of the show started there was a crotch grap.....it was obvious AT THAT POINT it wasn't family oriented and there was countless time to change the channel before the JJ/Justin episode.

Hey some people consider football not family oriented, I'm not one of them but its an aggressive sport that has at times errupted into violence. Things like that COULD happen anywhere at anytime, I just think its better for our kids to know about it then to try and hide it.

On a side note my 12 year old just got home from school (he goes to a public Christian school) and I asked him about it. He rolled his eyes and said "Mama thats all anyone has been talking about." I asked him what was said and he said all the teachers were talking about how unchristian it was. He said "It was unchristian mama, we all know that but we really didn't see what the big deal was, it was over in two seconds and you really couldn't see anything, we didn't understand why all the teachers had to preach to us about it."

Thats from probably 50 5th and 6th graders who discussed it on the playground AFTER they were preached at about it....they didn't really see what the big deal was. I think we as adults are the ones that take things to seriously. If adults weren't in such an uproar I think our kids would probably have not even noticed or not paid it any attention.

that's a different argument than what i have heard from most "outraged" parents.

my only point is, as a parent, it is your responsibility to prevent your children from watching things you don't want them to. personally, if i was watching with children, and i saw that nelly and kid rock were going to be performing (which was advertised weeks in advance) i would have planned to change the channel during halftime.

while i agree that the jj/justin thing was inappropriate if it was planned (though i don't think it is that big a deal, nor equivilent to assault or rape), parents should have had an inkling that the show was obviously not geared towards families since nelly and kid rock were performing.

there is a BIG difference between pink and nelly/kid rock.

whether the show SHOULD be family oriented or not is a different debate. most people on here have been saying that they thought the show WOULD be family oriented. no offense, but it doesn't take much research to figure out nelly/kid rock are not family performers.

Try all you want but I guarantee you when kids become teens they will look at this type of behavior as being over the top, old fashion and they won't give as much thought as some people have already._

Yes, that's probably true. However, one day when these teenagers have children of their own, MANY of them will probably be offended by such behavior.

Of course it could have been a family event. Would you not assume that since it is touted as a family sporting event, that the halftime show would be toned down so as to be family oriented? I assumed so. My mistake apparently. Kid Rock and Nellie can sing and act "clean" if the situation calls.

I believe the safe channels your looking for are Disney, Nick, Cartoon Network minus adult swim and other children networks. How anyone would think the Superbowl is a a family show is beyond me. They have advertised the halftime show well in advance to where you and everyone else who don't want your kids exposed to jj's boob could have turned during that time.

kristy, seriously -- have you seen nelly and kid rock act family appropriate ever?

is grinding against scantily clad women and grabbing crotches family appropriate? b/c i have never seen either of them NOT do one or both or the above. family appropriate for them is swearing 5 times instead of 50. :p

likewise, their lyrics are NOT family appropriate. obviously when performing at a halftime show they are going to be performing their own music, not the alphabet song or something.

honestly, no way no how would any young child of mine be seeing nelly or kid rock no matter what the venue. the fact is these performers are not appropriate for young kids, and even if they did tone down their act to be more family appropriate (which i don't really think they ever would) i wouldn't want my kids viewing them as role models or performers whose music and/or actions i approved of.

and really, i think any parents who thinks the superbowl is advertised as a family sporting event is deluding themselves. like i said beforre, maybe it SHOULD be a family sporting event, but based on superbowls past, i wouldn't classify it as good family entertainment. i really don't remember seeing any ads that "touted it" as family friendly either.

I'm kinda proud of my ten-year old DD's response which was............." I guess she didn't think her music was good enough to get the attention of the audience on its own."

Another thing....what if a free for all had broken out between the opposing teams on the field?? Don't say it wouldn't have because things like that have DEFINATLY happened. Or say a player got a bad call and smacked a ref. upside the head.....that wouldn't have been family friendly now would it?

My point is.....things are going to happen....planned or not. You can never ever plan ANY live event as being completly family friendly....take the streaker for instance....all the children there saw that and its not family friendly.

The only way you can make sure anything on the TV is family friendly is if you have watched it before or if you put the DVD in yourself.

Whew!!!!! I just read all the pages!!!!

I know last night when I was watching the game I was only half paying attention when the announcements were made for the performers. I remember groaning when I realized most of it would be rap type stuff. I did watch a bit more of Janet performing than the others. I wasn't impressed at all with Justin. I was appalled that kidrock was wearing a flag like that. At first I thought it was a shirt of some kind but with a closer look I saw it was a real American Flag. I made a comment to my dh that there would be a big stink about his attire.

I was alone when the Janet thing happened. I sat there with my mouth open thinking Did I just see what I thought I saw???? It was only for a second but I was prety sure I did see it. I found out later I was correct. I was thankful that I have a decent bedtime for my dd who is 6 yrs. old. She goes to bed at 8pm so at least she did not see anything.

I agree that it had to have been planned. Outfits like that just do not break away so perfectly without there being signs of it being ripped. And I know I have seen interviews where Janet has discussed her piercings. She has them in other places that I pray she doesn't show next time!! What she had on was NOT a pastie or tassel. It was a Nipple shield along with a bar going through her that I think is called a "captive". It waw just they were trying to outdo Britney. I was shocked, disgusted and thankful my dd was in bed.

Sounds like the Superbowl needs to go back to the Country performers like they used to. I am NOT a country music fan but at least they know how to put on a good show and keep their clothes on.

Regardless of who is scheduled to perform they have a responsibility to decent Americans to not get vulgar in front of them. It was not a private club or an on tour event.

Well, let's see. Here is an NFL sponsored site for kids. It includes the Superbowl AND the halftime show info as well. If it was not intended for kids, why do you suppose the NFL would put it on the kids'site?

http://www.nfl.com/xxxvi/kids/index.html

1) because the nfl is stupid

and more importantly

2) because the nfl realizes that most parents in america have no problem with their kids watching things that i think are inappropriate for small children (like britney ripping her clothes off, kid rock grabbing himself, etc)

there are lots of "kids" sites out there that are not my idea of family friendly. that is why it is up to each parent to decide where to draw the line.

all i'm saying is that i find it very naive for a parent to think nelly and kid rock would be ok entertainment for young kids.

i mean it's like if your friends jumped off a bridge would you too? just b/c the nfl has a kids page does that mean it's family friendly? nope.

I don't like the fact that the NFL is putting the blame on MTV, CBS.
Hey you NFL guys.. you run every aspect of the Superbowl telling the cities what to do.. Take the blame for this major foul up.

I didn't mind the Janet thing as much, no not because I'm a guy, it was fast and my kids 11 & 14 are aware of the human body,.. but man on man what was the guy do hangin on his..stuff. How do you explain that to your kids..

Anyway. .It's the NFL's fault, let's get back to a family half time.. maybe run by Disney
