We just got home a few days ago. Because many other trip reports have been helpful/inspirational, I thought that I would give it a go. First, let's start with the essentials.

Who:
Me - DH. The planner of this trip and big WDW fan.
DW - Our original Disney lover. Runner and the reason we have gone at this time 3 years "running". She runs in the half and full (this year) marathons in order to get us down to WDW.
DS5.9 - I may refer to him as 5.9. He is much like his mom in appearance and temperment. Constantly in motion, but not a daredevil. Huge Pirate fan.
DS2.8 - I guess he will be 2.8. He is like me. Wants to be like big brother. Constantly hungry and is a slight daredevil. Huge Cars (the movie, not the band) fan.
DGM - My mother, who didn't need much urging to come despite having to leave my Dad at home. 4th trip to WDW but 1st over 3 days and hasn't been outside MK or Epcot.

Travel Dates: January 5-12, 2007

Resort: Wilderness Lodge, courtyard view. We booked our resort about a month before our trip and were essentially left with WL for a deluxe resort. I had wanted to stay at WL last year, but was out-voted. Deluxe was important to us because of the location, size and amenities. With DME, there is no need to rent a car. Since we visit MK the most, followed by Epcot (usually), a monorail resort is handy.

ADRs: Tony's Town Square, Whispering Canyon, Raglan Road, Chef Mickey's, Crystal Palace, 1900 Park Fare, Garden Grille. We were on the dining plan for the 1st time. We debated until 4 days before our trip on whether to do DDP. In the end it seemed worth it, since we would normally do at least 1 TS a day anyway.

Those are the pre-trip facts. I will start the trip tomorrow and hopefully have some pics as well. I will try and give our opinions of the restaurants, rides, etc as well as I am writing the reports. I hope none of you get too bored and find some of the info as useful as I did with other repoprts.

until tomorrow...:hourglass

Now that I got the intro out of the way, on with the show, err trip...

As you can guess from my handle, we left Logan Airport (Boston) on Friday afternoon. We flew JetBlue. We thought that airline was very good for us. They had snack and beverage service and had no problem when we asked for extra snacks for our starving sons. There was plenty of leg room and the seats were comfortable. All seats had TVs on the seatback in front of them and the controls were thoughtfully located on the armrests. I always feel weird with the on-TV controls as I am always pushing on the seat in front of me:rolleyes1 . The only complaint that we had with JetBlue is that they did not offer a kids' movie:eek: . They had 3 movie choices, which were all geared for older kids/adults. We all enjoyed the flight, regardless, as there were plenty of channels to view.

We touched down in Orlando around 6:00pm and went directly to DME for our shuttle to WL. The place was dead and we only waited a few minutes for our bus to arrive. It was our second experience with DME and everything was proceeding flawlessly. Little did we know that would change later...

We arrived at the Wilderness Lodge in good time. We were actually the only ones on the bus, so no other stops needed to be made. When we entered the Lodge, we just stopped and looked. The pictures on the internet do not do the lobby justice. It is an amazing sight, especially with the Christmas decorations up. BTW, the decorations were taken down by the next morning, which was a bummer since none of us were motivated to take pics that night. After reeling in our chins, DW took DSs to the movie area adjacent to the check-in desk. Whoever thought that up (kids area), deserves a bonus. It was definitely nice to have them sitting quietly while I attended to business. DGM and I went to check in, since we had seperate ressies.

We had a couple fixable snags upon check-in. First, it was our park passes. We asked for 6-day PH, when we made our ressies, but decided to add another day about a week prior to the trip in order to carb-load at Tony's Town Square on Sat. night. We were told, over the phone by a CM, that it would be no problem to add the day when we checked in. The problem was that we had to get in line to wait for check-in and then get in another line at the Concierge desk to add the day. Why they couldn't do it at the check-in desk, nobody knew. It was minor, I know, but we just wanted to get something to eat at that point (8:00pm) and were grouchy because of it.

The other snag we had was that our Garden Grocer order, which was scheduled to arrive 5-7p, could not be found for a while. When they did find it, they could only find bag 4 of 4 in the frige. The rest were nowhere to be found by the front-desk CMs. At this point we took the bag and just headed to Roaring Forks for food and then would call Garden Grocer after when we got to our room.

The RF was just what the Dr ordered. after we had dinner, we all felt much better and were in better spirits. I think we all had cheeseburgers and fries, which we thought were pretty good. We then headed to our room.

When we got to our rooms, we noticed a heavy smell of cleaners. Mousekeeping said that they just shampooed the room, it was still damp in sections, and that we needed to let it air out a little. We complained a little but let it go. The smell did, eventually, dissipate. We also notice that we had a message. It was from Garden Grocer. They had called and left it when they dropped of the bags. The message told us exactly where the bags were located (bell services) and we promplty had them delivered by bell services. We will definitely be using Garden Grocer in the future:thumbsup2 . It must have been 10pm at this point so we decided to take a stroll around WL in anticipation our luggage would be delivered soon.

Our first impression of the entire WL was fantastic. We loved having everything in 1 building. The past 2 years we have stayed at CBR and Poly and didn't like how everything was so spread out, esp the CBR. Everthing seemed pretty convenient. Our rooms were 3117 and 3121, not connected, but only separated by 1 rm. It was fine. We were on the South wing looking over the inner courtyard. We could actually see some of the water pageant from our balcony and we had bunnies and ducks outside our room regularly. Even though we were on the "3rd" floor, it was only the second level from the ground at that part of the Lodge. The sound from the waterfall at night was soothing and we didn't notice any noise from the pool either. We enjoyed having the dual vanities with a separate toilet/shower room. The DSs loved the bunk beds. It was their first experience with them, and now they are demanding we get them at home. We requested mousekeeping put rails on both sides of the bottom bunk since DS2.8 was sleeping there and was still in a crib at home. It worked ot very well as we often woke in the morning to see 2.8's face and body smushed against the rails. I think he would have fallen off without them. I would be happy staying in those rooms in the future.

We got back from our stroll at 10:30 and got ready for bed. In bed at 11:00 and watch TV (very nice flatscreen) while waiting for our luggage. 11:30 rolls around and still no luggage:mad: . I called down to bell services to inquire. They said that they missed our luggage when we arrived, but it is on the way. I told them to deliver when it arrived. It was annoying since there wasn't many others using DME when we arrived at MCO. The luggage finally arrived at 12:30am. We are tired, but excited to get to sleep and start our 1st full day in the morning:cool1: .

I will try and review a day at a time and update daily. I am sorry if I was a bit log-winded, but I wanted to get our 1st impressions down along with some of the problem areas. If anyone has any questions please post and I will try and answer and possibly add some pics when I get my pics downloaded. I am not sure how to post pics, so advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey we were there around the same times (trip report link is in my siggy.) That must of been a pain not getting luggage until 12:30

We were pretty happy with GG too. This was our 1st time using them (and DME) and we will be doing that again! :thumbsup2

Looking foward to reading more. :)

We were there from 1/4/07 through 1/13/07 at the Wilderness Lodge close to you in room 3159, we looked out our window to the pool. Our kids were in room 3100, so let me apologize now for the noise that probably kept you up. Glad you had a good trip looking forward to the rest of your report.

When I get caught up here at work I plan on starting a report for our trip.

Hey it's cold here in Boston...I need to read more about your trip to get me through the next 24 hour cold snap here! popcorn::

You can read all of mine while you are waiting, I finished it. :cool1:
It is pretty cold in MI now too. Link is in my siggy.

I still want to hear more though BostonMickey. I love reading trip reports from people who where at WDW the same time as you.

I have to agree with "SWILLIS".. it's rather chilly up here in good old MA.. I am waiting patiently for your next posting (with my scarf and mittens on )

DisneyPhD - Thanks for the link to your trippie:thumbsup2 . I especially enjoyed reading it since my family is considering staying in the Yacht/Beach Club next trip and are considering DVC as well. GG was great and it definitely helped to have a printed order sheet from home to confirm everything was delivered. We have also found that cell phone use is much more convenient/reliable than walkie talkies as well. And our sons got a chuckle ot of the "Mine, Mine, Mine..." seagulls as well. That was good stuff.

Goofster57 - We did not notice any noise. Actually everything was so quiet we wondered how many people were staying at the resort. Can't wait to see your reportpopcorn:: . I am just catching up on all my work e-mails still. Yet another downer of returning to the real World...

swillis - you're not kidding! i woke this morning and it was 4 degrees:scared1: ! what happened to the 60s we had a week and a half ago?

I'll rip off another day in a little while. It's nothing super exciting as it was a pre-marathon relaxing day. More to come...

Hey, BostonMickey -

We recently relocated to Texas from Worcester. We are in the middle of an "Ice Storm", we got some freezing rain and that's it. Not the same kind that we Northerns are use to. When it snows more than 18 inches, then these Southerns can complain.

I love reading the Trip Reports. I look forward to the rest.

Just one suggestion - BUY DVC!!! It is the best purchase my DH and I made 10 years ago!

It was hot that day (dramatic license). I believe it was in the low 80s, which is hot for me this time of year. We set out via bus to the All Star Sports Complex. SIDE RANT - the bus driver had absolutely no idea where she was going. We ended up down at AK and had to pull out our personal map and direct the driver back to the Complex. I believe we went off property at one point. Whew! Back to the complex. We were thereto pick up DWs marathon packet and for the DSs to run in their "fun run". It was actually very fun and exciting. The 7-8 y.o. ran a 400 yard dash. The 4-6 y.o. ran a 200 yd and the 1-3 y.o. ran a 100 yd. There were a lot of contestants. Parents were allowed to run withtheir kids. I ran with DS5.9 and DW ran with DS2.8. Everyone was given a "medal" at the end of their respective races. Our boys, and parents, had a lot of fun. It was a nice way to start our vacation.

We then headed back to WL for naps and pool. DW and DS2.8 took a nap and DGM, DS5.9, and I went to the pool/hot tub/beach. We had a great time and DW and DS2.8 joined us after a while. There are lots of places in the pool to go, since it is kind of U-shaped. I loved that the stream emptied into the pool ala a stream into a lake/pond. The water slide was fun and fairly tame. We all went on it except for 2.8. We also got viewings of the tall guyser for the 1st time. I am not sure if this is normal, but the guyser would sometimes go off and be only 10-15 ft tall. At other times, it would shoot way up (awesome!). We headed out to our ADR at Tony's Town Sq in the evening and were able to stroll around MK briefly beforehand. That really put us in the Disney Spirit!

Tony's was better than we remembered from a couple years ago. It was nice being on the Dining plan and being able to order something we may not have if we were not on DDP. Our party ordered the New York Strip Steak, Spagh. and Meatballs, grilled salmon and 2 kids mac n cheeses. All was delicious! The service was very good as well. i think we split 2 apps. and we all had our own desserts. A common complaint I see with the DDP is that it is too much food. I think you can share apps and desserts and still come out ahead, especially if you have kids 3-9. A complaint I have with DDP is that DS2.8 eats like DS5.9 and we would have loved to put him on the DDP, since we had to order him a separate meal every time (except Buffets). I think we will hit Tony's for a pre-race dinner again next year.

Then came the bonus. We left Tony's and headed for the boat back to WL. Right after we boarded, the fireworks started. I could tell out Captain took his time launching and ferrying us as we saw the whole show before leaving the lagoon. It was awesome! Since we were first in line to get on the boat, we had our choice of seats and missed nothing. It was almost like having a private Wishes cruise (almost...). DS2.8 is not fond of fireworks, but DS5.9 loves them and enjoyed the show. I think it shouldn't be that hard to time the fireworks with the boat ride if you really wanted.

We were let off at WL shortly after the end of the fireworks and proceeed to our rooms where 5.9 passed out, but 2.8 stayed awake until 11:30 (foreshadowing). I might as well preface the rest of the trippie by stating that 5.9 went lights out (constant motion) for duration of the day with no nap. He then proceeded to pass out once we hit the room. 2.8, on the other hand, took several breaks and 1 good nap a day (in the stroller) to last him to 11-11:30 every night. What is up with the varying schedules?

All the adults were beat by the end of the trip. More on Day 2, another slow day, tomorrow...

DW and I went to school in Worcester (good times!). We go back often for different occasions. It is a great turn-around city.

I was born & raised in Worcester. Just left last April for DH's new career.

I am interested in hearing more about the DDP. I am considering it for our upcoming trip. DD will be 5 and DS will be 2 (who eats more than my DD). We don't eat apps or desserts with our table service meals. We might do table service every other day. Is it worth it? Thanks for any opinions I can get.

I am glad you enjoyed our TR. I am really enjoying seeing the other side of what was going on while I was there (the inside of the marathon.) :thumbsup2

Just think if we had kept our VWL ressies we might have meet! :cool1:

This will be another quick report as not much was done on this day. I will offer up some opinions on the marathon and DDP (since ILuvWishes asked).

As I said earlier, DW runs (recreationally) and has run the Disney 1/2 marathon the last 2 years. It is a good way for her to keep in shape and another excuse (like that's needed!;) ) for us to get to WDW. Anyway, it has been held on the 1st or 2nd weekend in January. We actually like going at this time for a couple reasons:
1) the weather is nice, not so hot
2) the crowds are light

The last 2 years, since we were by ourselves, I have brought the DSs (in the stroller and wrapped in blankets) to catch a glimpse or 2 of DW while she is running:thumbsup2 . It is fun but we have to get up early. The race starts at 6:00am, but the runners have to report by 4:30am. I usually have a hard time going back to sleep after my wife leaves (3:30am). Then we meet DW at the finish (Epcot) which is usually mobbed and chaotic:headache: . We then would go back to our resort for showers and lunch and head to the parks. Since DGM was with us this year, and DW was running the full marathon, i decided to call Grammy(DGM) at 7:00 to come watch sleeping DSs :cool1: while I headed out with camera and running gear to meet DW. I met her right after she was through MK and ran with her for a few miles. It was a fairly dead stretch with a few spectators and fewer sights to see. Then I ran back to WL to pick up the rest of the crew and meet DW at the finish.

We arrived at Epcot via ferry to Contemporary/mono to TTC/mono to Epcot. SIDEBAR: Because of the lighter crowds at DWD during our stay, we ran into only 2 problems with transportation during our stay. One was the aforementioned trip off Disney property on the way to All Star Sports. The other was a trip from AK to DTD, will explain in tomorrows installment. We had very little wait times and mostly took the boat to MK or the CR to get the monorail. It was surprisingly easy, even when we had to stop off at Fort Wilderness. The boat is so mellow and relaxing:cloud9: . Transportation was better than expected. RANT OFF. Sorry about that. I know a concern we had, going into our trip, was the transportation to/from WL, so I thought I should touch on it. Now where was I... Oh yeah, Epcot.

We met DW at the finish and took a bus back to WL for late luch, naps, pool and dinner. For those interested in running in future Disney races, it has been our experience that the bus transportation back to a MK resort is far better than taking the monorail. Last year we had to wait about 1/2 hr to get on a monorail since there were so many people. When we did get on, it was packed, hot and smelly (those runners were nasty!). We took the bus this year. It was about a 10 minute wait and the bus was only 1/4 full, comfortable and cool.

We ate at Roaring Forks for lunch. I think I tried the pizza that meal. It wasn't bad for counter service. I want to offer a bit of advice for anyone contemplating eating out on the terrace at Roaring Forks. If you don't want to get harassed by about 100 ducks and birds, eat inside. One of the ducks kept nipping at DW feet. There was a funny (to me) incident that did occur though. A couple left their 2 adolescent daughters with the food outside while they went back in for condiments and cutlery. INCOMING! You should have seen the birds come in! I don't know if they smelled virgin blood or what, but by the time the parents came back, one daughter was in tears, the other was screaming, half the fries were gone and there was a burger on the ground! What a sight:rolleyes1 . Yet another reason parents shouldn't leave helpless children alone.

After lunch DW and 2.8 headed back to the room for naps (long ones). 5.9, DGM and I satyed out at the pool, hot tub, beach (lifeguards brought out beach toys for kids), and pool bar. It was another great day for the pool (not for running), 85 deg and a little humid. Another opinion about the pool is that it wasn't crowded while we were there, but it seems it would become so during peak/hot seasons. We did walk by the quiet (villas) pool on that afternoon and there were only a handful of people there.

That night we ate at Whispering Canyon Cafe for dinner. We had a lot of fun there, despite my being publicly shamed:guilty:(more on that in a minute). We knew what to expect before heading in and we weren't dissappointed. 5.9 even ordered the ketchup despite not needing it. The DDP here was tricky. My wife and 5.9 ordered there own dishes, while I ordered the all-you-can-eat skillet. The thought being that 2.8 would share mine. 5.9 and I also ordered the bottomless shakes (both on the DDP). My wife said that she was really thirsty since she ran in the race earlier and just wanted water. She was brought a glass of water that must have held at least 1/2 gal. It was huge and DW almost had to get up out of her chair to drink out of the 2 ft straw. Unfortunately, we also just got 2.8 a water, because once his eyes settled on my shake "goodnight!". (Now comes the public scorn.) :rolleyes1 So instead of ordering one for him, I thought "what the heck, mine is bottomless and he has a cup already. I'll just drink his water and pour some of my shake into his cup." Let's file that one under "things I wished had not entered my mind". Well no sooner had I sucked down his last drop of water and was putting the cup down, our waitress strolls up, grabs the cup and asked if I had just finished my son's water.:confused3 My face turns red, and I mumble something that "um, yeah..." To make matters even worse 2.8 is screaming for a drink. Then when I thought things couldn't get any worse, the waitress screams for quiet throughout WCC. She then yells how this dad drank all his poor son's water, followed by a lot of boos and jeers (all good natured). The waitress then proceeds to order all the patrons to point at me and yell, in unison, "Shame, shame on you!" It was an embarrasing riot. We were all laughing. A guy at another table made the mistake of asking for Pepsi, followed by a request for quiet from the waiter, and in unison "Mickey only drinks Coke!". That was pretty funny. I think there were a couple of other group chants, but don't remember them. Ketchup was asked for by several people, then all the kids ran in pole horses in a parade around WCC, folloewd by swearin'. All the kids swore to (while on vacation) eat as much sweats as possible, ask for everything they saw, get up early and stay up late, etc. The food was average, but was definitely not the focal point of the meal. It was a lot of fun and we would eat there again.

We took a walk around the WL after dinner then headed back down to the pool which had only about 10 people in it. That was fun, but the slide had been closed due to no lifeguards. After a while we called it a night and headed back to the rooms to plan our attack for our first day at the parks - AK.

OOOH, that was longer than I expected. hopefully not too boring with the details. AK report to come tomorrow...

BostonMickey

PS Yes, I did end up ordering 2.8 his own shake after "the incident"!:thumbsup2

BostonMickey,
Great report makes me feel like I was there, Oh wait I was.

I had heard somewhere maybe on one of the 100’s of Disney channels that showed 24/7 in the room that the Geyser use to erupt to the maximum height every time, but this sometimes resulted in the mist going into guest rooms, so it is now controlled by a computer that takes into consideration the wind speed and direction to determine the height of the eruption.

We also found the Disney transportation system to be more than adequate for our needs, the only day that it was a little slow was on the full marathon day, there was a lot of traffic and blocked off streets.

We hit Whispering Canyon Café our first night, luckily I stayed under the radar of our server.

LOL, your shame at dinner was a lot worse then mine (triping over Leo and landing on my bum.) Of course I find out later DH was actually recording the whole thing, but luckly he it was on DD and not me. :lmao:

Very interesting to hear the inside of the Marathon. I didn't know non runners could run along side runners. (Did that many any sense?)

We had all planned to leave the room at 8:00ish. We decided to sleep a little longer, since we had a busy day on Sunday, and after a quick bite in the room, we were ready to leave at 9:00. The bus to Animal Kingdom was waiting for us down at the bus depot and we immediately left for AK. After a 10 min ride, we were through the gates at about 9:15a.

We headed directly for Kilimanjaro Safaris, with brief stops to see some animals in the opening area. The wait was only 10 min, so we decided to head right in. The wait time was pretty accurate, if you include the time it took us to walk to the trucks with a stop to hand over our stroller. The Safari is always a must see for our family and we usually see a lot of animals out and about. This time was no different. I think we got to see every animal with the exception of the lions, which were probably snoozing somewhere. We did see a baby giraffe with an adult grazing in the trees. I can recite a lot of the poacher skit now, but our kids and newcomers (like DGM) enjoy it. Our guide/driver was very good as well.

We then strolled through Pangani Trail, which we always hit as well. It was fun as usual, with the only things of note here were the meerkats were nowhere to be seen and in the fish/hippo water viewing area, a hippo was swimming right next to the glass. At one point it turned to the crowd, swam right up and smushed it's face against the glass. It was like it was giving a kiss through the glass! Everyone loved that.

It was then on to Rafiki's planet watch, which we went to for the 1st time ever. We usually only spend one full day here, so we can only hit a certain amount of attractions. 2.8 fell asleep right after we got off the train. So 5.9 had all the fun at the petting area and we were able to see a live operation going on in the Conservation Station. We will probably visit this again next year.

After lunch at the McDs, we stayed in Dinoland for playtime at the Boneyard, another must do at AK. The kids just love it. Although this time, kids were not allowed to take shoes off in the sandbox. There seemed to be a lot less kids in the snadbox. I wonder if this is why. We didn't stay here to unbury the mammoth, as long as we usually do, because of the constant need to empty shoes. We then played a few games in the arcade, hit Triceratops spin a few times and Primeval whirl.

It was then time to don the ponchos and get on kali River Rapids. This has been one of 5.9s favorites at WDW for the past 3 years and he loves to go on it with me. As usual, there were a few poor souls who didn't have rain gear and go completely drenched. We found out the hard way a couple years ago.

We then caught the parade. It was nice to sit and relax a little. Get there early if you want a prime spot. We always like to see the animal decorations of this parade. There were these 2 guys saving a spot (about 6ft wide) for there wives and kids. Other kids and parents came by but were turned away. It was a hame because the guys' families came about 3 minutes before the parade came by and proceeded to stand in front of the kids waiting behind them. Oh well (sorry for the rant).

On the way out, around 4:45p, we ducked in to see "It's Tough to be a Bug". It was fun, but 2.8 was freaked and had to leave early. Our 2nd and last problem with Disney transportation happened at this time. We got to the bus depot at 5:05. We had 6:00 ressies at Raglan Road in DTD. Since ther is no direct bus from AK to DTD (which we knew), we decided to go to Saratoga Springs (never been there) and take the water shuttle over to the Marketplace and walk to dinner. Well, about 30 min later the SSR bus arrives. I realize now that we should have taken AKL bus, then a bus from AKL to DTD, especially since there had been 2-3 buses come and go for every other resort. Anyway, after everyone is loaded, we head out. I say to myself that it is a pretty straight shot to SSR, we may still get there on time. That is until we turn off into Blizzard Beach, which is completely empty (not a single car or person to be seen). Then it's on to SSR. Little did we know we would be the 4th or 5th stop at SSR. Thankfully we chatted with some SSR guests and got directions from the bus stop to the boat launch, otherwise we would have lost it. After a mad dash with kids and limping Grammy through the pool area and dining area, we get to the boat launch at 6:05. Luckily there was a boat approaching and bound for DTD. I spoke with the Captain on the way over to the Marketplace and the boat also made stops at PI and the West Side. It would be the West Side 1st though (DOH!). We got off at the marketplace and booked it over to Raglan Road. We checked in at 6:30 and were seated at 6:35. The hostess was very nice and understanding. We were all frazzled at this point and were relieved to be seated right away. Then we ordered and got our food. It was delicious. DW and I agreed that it was probably the best meal we had during our stay. The beer selection was great as well. We will go back during our next trip. I should add at this point, that an advantage that we have found with the meal plan. We would normally not order appetizers and we would be famished with kids bouncing off the wall by the time the entees came. Since apps are included, we received the apps quickly and had something for us all to munch on while witing for the main dishes. It is worth it just to have the boys sitting still.

We spent some more time at the Marketplace shops then headed home (WL). It was a fast paced day, but a very good one depsite our transportation snafu, which can be avoided next time. We planned our next day at MGM/MK before turning in.

Disney PhD - Non-registered runners are allowed to run, but won't get officially timed or get a medal, shirt for participation, etc. I have a cousin who lives in Orlando, who has run the Disney Marathon years ago. He has since run many miles with friends in several different races. there are several lonely stretches wher theis can be a welcome bonus for the registered runners.

Goofster - That is very interesting about the geyser. It does make sense. Luckily we did see it explode to great heights a few times during our stay.

I was born & raised in Worcester. Just left last April for DH's new career.

ILuvWishes, I am a Worcester native. I live in Millbury now. Where abouts did you grow up? I grew up in the Main South area, Cambridge St.
