I am glad my picture could be of use! I do not remember any etched wine glasses, but then I was not shopping for glasses anyway. I think I remember that they had wine glasses with a three-dimensional Mickey head at the top of the stem of the glass. I saw those last week in Disneyland Paris and they looked very familiar to me, so I think I saw them at WDW, too. Have a great anniversary trip!

Thanks so much for the well wishes, I honestly cannot believe it's been 20 years!!:scared1:

And I hope the wine glasses that you saw at Disneyland Paris are what you had seen at WDW, they sound like something I would purchase.

Just wanted to share that DD, DM, and I will be at the AKL Jan2-5 for a short girls trip!! I am so excited. I have forgotten how much I love this resort...thanks for the (very long) thread!!

Hi to all AKL vet's:
I have just booked AKL for July(rookie stay).I have been reading and studying this thread for weeks. Thanks for all the insiders' tips to AKL, the decision was easier than I first anticipated. I got the pool view room because my son (15) wants to be closed to the action, lol. Can somebody tell me whether or not you need to pass the lobby area to get to the pools? Is there a better pool view room preference? any suggestions will be appreciated.

...if you get a room in the Giraffe Trail, there is also an elevator (which we used OFTEN!) about halfway down the corridor, that goes directly to the first floor..it lets you out near the small bridge that is at the front edge of the pool (opposite the pool bar)....

This is just a test to see if I know how to post pics. Wish me luck!

Here are some of my MANY photos! Most of these are taken from our room, #3551, which is nearly at the end of Zebra Trail, the second wing that comes off the main hall and overlooking the Uzima Savannah.

Happy Viewing!

Denise

THe pic above is of the guy who frequently jumped the barrier to munch on grass around the people pen. You know the grass is always greener on the other side!

Hi everyone,
I am only on about page 70 so I still have a long way to go and a lot to learn but I wanted to post now that ours plans are finalized. This is my first time staying at AKL and only my second trip to WDW (Dec. 06 for honeymoon at WL). This trip it will be me, DH, my mom and dad; we are staying Dec. 8-15 2008 in a Savanah view and I requested Arusha view close to the lobby (dad is on oxygen and I have read that the hallways can be quite a trek) . We booked with DU which is my first time using a TA for any vacation so I hope it works out and so far so good. I'm sure I will have lots of questions but I am going to try to read the thread first. Anyway just wanted to say hi and I look forward to chatting with you guys and seeing more pictures, I am already excited and it's over a year away! :cheer2:

We are leaving for AKL in a 10 days and been reading the thread getting ready to go and psyched for the trip but was wondering about a certain aspect of the lodge-the bus stop, not so much the transportation itself, but the configuration of the stop. Is it a covered walkway all the way down to the buses? How far is from the entrance to the lobby? Are their seperate "bays" for each park? I know it may seem as a wierd question but an inquiring mind wants to know! TIA

Yes, it is covered all the way down...or I would say the majority of the way. Maybe not right outside the Zawadi outside entrance, but mostly yes, covered. And there are different, clearly marked areas for each park. It's not FAR, but it's not right outside the doors either. (Warning, you have to walk RIGHT THROUGH the smoking area!) It's kind of downhill going to the buses, and (slightly) uphill coming back...(but when you're really tired and it's really hot and you're carrying a sleeping 3 year old, it's like climbing everest!)

After about an hour of searching, I can't find current info on a few questions I have.

1. When can you expect to be back at AKL from the sunrise safari? We will not stay at AK after.
2. What are current resort activities for Sat. and Sun.? DD enjoyed feeding pelicans and drumming last time.
3. If staying at concierge level, can you get ADRs just a few weeks before arrival? There are a couple that I have not been able to book myself, but would concierge be able to do that for us?

Thanks

KIMMAR067,
Thank you. I might try to request the Girrafe Trail Pool view room. According to the AKL map, it seems like the Girrafe Trail side's rooms are indeed a bit closer to the bus station too.

Okay - so prior to going to WDW and AKL I read all the websites (this one most frequently!!) and all the AKL threads (Again, this one most everyday!!)and I was very excited about our trip to the world and the stay at AKL. I must admit, I was concerned about the construction, the distance from the parks, etc.... However, I am so thrilled to report (that like the rest of you!!) we LOVED our stay at AKL!!!! My husband, who selected AKL as our resort this trip, was not really into the planning of the trip (SURPRISE!!) and often looked at me like I was nuts as I spent endless hours on this site. However, he was like a little boy when we arrived at the resort. Our first room was on the outside savannah facing the construction and we were very disappointed with the limited number of activity on the savannah. So, on the second day, my husband visited the front desk and they were more than happy to relocated us to the Zebra trail with an inward facing savannah room. The man at the desk said that the hotel was only at 50% capacity because of the construction, but were able to accomodate us with connecting rooms. We were just thrilled with our new room and the incredible animals we veiwed everyday. It was awesome to see the kids (7,4 and 3) so excited to identify and observe the animals everyday!!

The bus rides... We had no problems at all with the buses or the lengths of the rides to the parks. Like I said, our kids are little and it was never a problem. The longest ride was probably 20 minutes or so to Magic Kingdom, which was really no longer than when we were staying at CBR. Epcot and MGM were about a 15 minute ride and AK only 5-10 minutes. The buses arrived quickly and the bus area was nicely covered and protected us from the brief Florida downpours!!

The restaurants.... Both Boma and Jiko were great. We all enjoyed the food and the kids had no problem finding things they would eat - and they ARE VERY PICKY eaters!! The MARA was the only place we were not crazy about. It kinda felt like you were eating in the basement or something. It was dark and dreary but really didn't change our overall LOVE for the resort.

Activities... Although we spent a lot of time at the parks, we did find time to relax by the pool, participate in the nightly parade, and use the night vision goggles to view animals. The kids loved the pool and the slide, which the the perfect size for my little ones, and are still singing "AFRICA" from their nightly parades around the lobby (They really enjoyed that!!). We also loved the night vision goggles - my husband decided he really wanted a pair of them until the CM told him the cost!!

I hope this helps anyone who is trying to make the decision of where to stay. While we were in WDW we visited GF and the Poly and my husband and I decided that they just couldn't compare to the AKL!! We will NEVER stay anywhere but there again!! :cool1:

Thanks for the report! :goodvibes You're kids are the same ages as mine and i have the same concerns with transpo, etc.

Was the room big enough to accomodate your family of 5?

Did you book a Savanah or were you upgraded?

DId you have 2 Qeens or the bunk option? We have bunks booked but waffle if we should have just stuck wiht 2 Q's ?

TIA and Glad you had a great trip! :cool1:

The pix are coming...still working on uploading them from the new camera we bought for the trip!

We did have savannah rooms booked and we actually had 2 rooms because we took my mom-in-law with us. One of the rooms had the bunks and the other did not. The rooms were typical hotel size rooms and we found with the little ones it was nice to have both rooms, so they could wander a bit. It was also nice to have 2 bathrooms!!

Don't worry about any of the other stuff - It was a great vacation!! On the way home, it seemed as if the bus rides were just long enough for the kids to fall asleep, so my husband and I had to carry them up to bed:) !!

Keep the questions coming!!

Nicole

You are so lucky they were able to move you! We were there a few weeks ago and had the construction view and we could not be moved. It was really disappointing.

subscribing, we are thinking of staying at AKL instead of the Yacht Club for our anniversary/birthday trip next year. Decisions, decisions :confused3 I want to get more info on this resort. Thanks

...nice pix...thanks for sharing!:thumbsup2[/QUOTE]

Thanks! I've got tons more. We saw animals so often & I couldn't resist snapping away! Here's more:

Had breakfast at Spoodles this morning – had the AYCE meal – it was great, but the eggs were a little too runny for my wife. The French toast of the meal was excellent. The coffee is better at Spoodles than at the resorts so far.
This was the day we transferred from BWI to AKL. The transfer went smoothly – we called BWI bell service they came up within 10 minutes to get our luggage – after that is when we went to breakfast. We came back from breakfast and finished getting ready.
We went to take the bus transportation for this resort and it was fast. It only took 10 minutes for the bus to come by to pick us up.
AKL is amazing with breathtaking views. When we arrived we were taken to concierge desk to check-in; however, our room was not ready, but we were not surprised. We went to the pool to relax and do some laundry; while we waited for our room. About 45 minutes later they called us to let us know our room was ready. They first put us in room 4423 – (Arusha/Zebra Trail) only to discover that maintenance had decided that it had some type of leak – so they moved us – even though we went into the room and changed from our swim wear. We went back to concierge and we were given room 2319 (Arusha/Kudo Trail). At first my wife did not like the room because it did not have some of the other nice things like the new TVs as well as the distance from the concierge lounge, but after we went out on the balcony and saw zebras, giraffes, and some of the other animals that she decided it is an ok room – besides we are at AKL. We also noticed that this has a nicer view (other room had a tree right in our way of viewing) and this room also seemed closer to the animals.
Once we got to our new room, we called bell service and they delivered our luggage within 5 minutes of the phone call. All in all, I would consider it a very smooth hotel transfer.
We spent time on the balcony and then went to the culinary tour; which was great. I enjoyed it more than my wife, but it made me so anxious to try Boma for dinner that I went to the desk and had my ADR changed from 7:50 tonight to right now. Even with that change it only took 15 minutes and wow the food was great. I tried the Fufu and it was better than I expected. I also liked the Gerety Rice and it was great – I ended up having two servings of them. I also had some of those famous ZDs. I also bought some at Mara. My wife thought the carrot ginger soup was excellent.
Went to DTD and we waited 10 minutes for the bus to the place. It was raining so hard on the way over there, we thought we would have to leave as soon as we would arrive, but it stopped after our arrival. We had a great time and did our annual track to DTD. We also tried those create your own marshmallows at Goofy’s and they are the best.
We got back to the hotel to our wonderful turn-down service and settled for a nice night of rest and relaxation.
Just before going to bed, my wife noticed some cattle outside our window. We went back onto the balcony and also saw a zebra. It was a great sight and one that you have to see to truly experience its awesomeness.

This morning we did the concierge breakfast safari and it was good – one of those once in a life time type adventures. I would have to say this is one of those adventures that you have to try at least once. Our guides were George and Ric – they were very knowledgeable and personable. We were able to see and learn about several animals on the safari. The guides also told us a little how the ride was built and how they kept the animals in their own area. The breakfast was very good at the end of the safari (it was in pizzafari instead of tusker house). We did not get a fast pass to ride the ride again, but it did not really matter to us; especially since we just got off the ride. It was a neat experience to travel back to pizzafari from the ride and see all the people and the parade with Minnie, Pluto, and Goofy on the truck walking to the Harambe village section.
The rest of the day we spent visiting the attractions at DAK. We did get to see the Finding Nemo, the Musical show and it was even better than we had imagined. We had seen a YouTube video of the show, but it was much better in person. It is like the FOTLK show where we will have to see that every time we go to DAK. The weather today was excellent – there was a nice breeze and it made being out in the park bearable.
Around 2:30 pm, we went back to the hotel to have lunch. We ate at Mara and had the chicken strip basket again (both of our favorite food at WDW). We then went and took an hour nap back in our room. We desired this trip to be full of rest and relaxation and it has truly been what we desired. I am glad now that we decided not to do our normal commando type trip. So far it is a great vacation.
This evening we decided to say around the hotel. We went up to the lounge for a snack after relaxing and reading around the pool. It was so windy that it was almost too cool to be around the pool. I tried the peanut butter uncrustable things and they are great. My wife had the carrot-ginger soup again. The lounge is nice to supplement your meals, but I would have to agree with others that it cannot be a meal replacements.
We then went to the fire pit to sit and relax and read while we waited for the story telling. It was so relaxing reading by the fire. The story teller was excellent and did a great job with audience participation. We all had a part in his story. It was one of my favorite things at AKL.
Around 8:10 p.m., we went to go find a seat to relax and read and wait for the cultural presentation. Our presenter, Kaiser – from Botswana came out earlier and I had the chance to talk to him about his country. I found the entire thing very informative and entertaining, but of course, I am excited about learning new things; especially about different cultures. It was nice to listen to his enthusiasm for his country. I felt sort of bad for him when his presentation started – he only had me, my wife and another gentleman show up. He did a great job of trying to get audience participation (me). I don’t how the others felt in the presentation, but I felt like I was listening to a friend talk. It was great. I asked for a card from his country (he was giving out to those who came to the presentation) and he wrote his name and email on it. I plan to send him an email when I get home.
The last thing we did was go do the night vision – again one of those events that you just have to experience to understand and feel the emotion involved with it. The view was just like you were looking at it in the day. My wife enjoyed it too; although, she stated she had a difficult making out the animals because of her bifocals – she did state she could see the shape/figure of the animals.
We got back to the hotel to our wonderful turn-down service and settled for a nice night of rest and relaxation.
Just before going to bed, my wife noticed some zebra outside our window. We went back onto the balcony. It was a great sight and one that you have to see to truly experience its awesomeness.
Overall, our stay at AKL was fair (and not just because of the room). I probably would not attempt to stay here in the future. The staff did not seem as friendly as they were at BWI. There the staff would acknowledge you and say hello; especially the concierge staff, but at AKL – I almost felt like an intruder. The concierge staff was not impressive as they were in email (especially Don as in Donald Duck). They never acknowledged your arrival and when you went to the desk to talk to them they always had that – I am busy personification about them. Also, concierge here gave us difficulty in getting bottled water for the room; although they ended up giving it to us begrudgingly – stated it was against their policy and we could not have any more. However, at BWI – they were more than willing to give us bottled water for the room – even to the point of asking how many do we want. Now, don’t get me wrong – I have worked in the service industry for 20+ years and I know that you can’t please everyone, but one thing I do know is that sometime all it takes is just a simple hello. I work in a library now and I can’t emphasize that enough to my own employees. It is just good customer satisfaction.
AKL construction update – we could not hear construction noise anywhere; including on our balcony. The concierge lounge is back up on the sixth floor overlooking the lobby. I agree with others that it is an impressive view of the lodge.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.
