JAMBO! The UN-official AKL Thread ~ UPDATED(short film/pg 8 & slideshow/pg 12) Part 2

Okay, I have to admit I'm nervous. We had booked a Savanna Room for our September (free dining!) trip back before the first of the year when we were there over NYE. I just called today and upgraded to the concierge level because of the outstanding experience we had with the Polynesian and their concierge as well as really wanting the Sunrise Safari.

But I'm very nervous right now! The whole reason we booked AKL was to get a Savanna view room! Now we can get either a Pool view or a Savanna room and I'm seriously kinda freaking out about it! The reservation CM put it in that we request a savanna view, but if we don't get it both FH and I are going to be so heartbroken!

Does anyone have any experience with this or any advice? I'd love to get it all the advice I can at this point... especially since we won't be at AKL until at least 2 because of magical express! :scared1:

My sister and I stayed CL last November. We requested a definite savannah view (my sister is animal crazy and both of her horses had died that year); I even booked directly through Disney as I was told I would have a better chance of getting my request. Went through IPO for our safari requests, and also added that we wanted Arusha, Zebra trail. We arrived at 8:30AM, were told our room was ready, and were whisked up to... a pool-view room! We told the guy that we did not want a pool-view, and he immediately took us to the CL desk. The guy there was not very happy, but he called IPO and found out that we did have the request in. They told us we would have to wait until the afternoon, but we would get Kudu, Arusha. When we went back, the woman there looked up where they put us, and said they gave us a bunk bed room! She moved us again, and we ended up Kudu, Sunset. At that point, we were happy to have any view! But it ended up being okay; we could see the pens in the distance, and it was funny to watch a giraffe who would nosy over the fence, and an ostrich who would rattle the gate. We got a lot of animal viewing, and little people viewing!

So I would say that in a way, you are arriving at a time that might be better as they will have more rooms ready to be occupied. Also, if you are not happy, just politely let them know. They will do their best to make you happy, even if it might not be until the next day. And just remember, what you think may be ideal, may not necessarily be the very best. We ended up enjoying our room, even though it was not where we dreamed of staying. And I would let IPO know you room desires, and have them book the safari, too.

Have fun! We loved it!

:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 Just wanted to share my great experience with the AKL IPO. Over the past two weeks I have been VERY happy with them.

I had heard (via the boards) more then a few positive comments about them...but I was blown away (in a very good way) by them. Especially Juanita and Don. Those two ROCK! They are total magic makers! Not that they did anything "special" for me that they don't do for everyone, they simply made the ressies I asked them to...

BUT they are total magic makers for their ability to make me feel like I was the only guest in the world while I was on the phone with them and to make me laugh, share tidbits, and just be flat out pure WONDERFUL as far as them bringing the Disney magic to life via a phone call...NOT the easiest thing to do! ;)

We have stayed at many different resorts at the concierge level (outside of WDW, at WDW we have only done one other CL stay) and maybe it's the "Disneyfied" way they made me feel...but they exceeded my expectations on promptness, friendliness (blew that WAY out of the water), attention to detail, etc.

SO...long ramble short (but they really do deserve mega kudos for a job very well done) I am looking for the email address of their immediate supervisor(s) Does anyone know who the right person for me to contact would be? I think that they deserve a bit of bragging! They were so very wonderful! :wizard: :wizard: I know the general Disney feedback email...is this the one I should use? Or does AKL or the IPO office have a central office or manager who I could share my comments with?

THANKS GUYS!!

The Sunrise Safari books through the IPO. We will be there in September too! I will be the one running around snapping pictures of everything on the walls, on the floors and the savannas! ;) I am SUPER de DOOPER excited about this trip! :) Good luck and give the IPO office a call...they will take good care of you (see my above post). :thumbsup2

Does anyone know what the doors are made out of? Are they wood or metal? Trying to decide what I am going to make my door sign out of.

I'm considering my first trip solo to WDW. I have NEVER stayed onsite but AKL has peaked my interest. However, is it worth it if I can only afford a standard view?? Thanks!

I've been considering DVC for awhile and if our May trip goes well we may buy into the AKL DVC. I contacted DVC and yesterday I received a package with information specific to the AKL DVC.

What was most interesting was the concept art and a map on the last page that shows what the final expected layout of the resort will be, including plan estimates of what will finish when. According to this, there will be construction to every part of the current AKL structure that will take place through May 2008.

Most of the current AKL structure that consists of the rooms will complete construction by September of this year with the vast majority being completed in May of this year. The part that is being worked on through May of next year looks to be the main lobby area and Ostrich and Giraffe trails.

It doesn't say specifically when they will begin construction on the new building but it does say they estimate rooms for rental there in 2009 so I suspect they'd have to start construction by the end of this year. I guess the warning here would be for folks assigned to stay in Kudo Trail (the side facing the sunset savanna) once the construction begins. I say this because I suspect it will be a clear shot of construction and they may clear the savanna as to not scare the animals.

The villas building will look like an ENORMOUS backwards three and will be built off to the side of where the sunset savanna will be. It looks like the sunset savanna will become a humongous savanna shared by the current AKL and the new construction. The map shows a separate check-in, pool complex, and playpark. This place look HUGE - so much so that the existing AKL seems tiny.

Our scanner hasn't been working but I'll try and get that going so I can scan the map (with key) and the point rates for everyone to see.

I hope my descriptions were clear enough.

Pics, maps, etc are all available and posted in the DVC Miscellaneous area here at the dis boards. If you need pointing to specific threads, let me know and I'll make a list here....

Oh! I wasn't aware of that. Whenever I do a search here the search function didn't work real well. Since I saw many questions specific to the construction (including my own) on this thread I thought it wouldn't be a problem to post here. Sorry for hijacking the thread.

pilfer, would you mind posting the links or pointing me in the right direction? I'd love to read more of what people are thinking.

Does anyone, by the way, know the number for booking the Sunrise Safari? I'd like to go ahead and do that 180 days out so we know for sure that we can take it! Also, does anyone know if since you're already in the park, if you have park tickets you can just stay in the park? We'd like to run over to Everest after breakfast if we're allowed to, since we don't have as much time in Animal Kingdom as we'd like! :thumbsup2

The AKL IPO books the Sunrise Safari. Let them know ASAP that you want to book it. You must have park tickets to the AK in order to go on this safari. After breakfast you are on your own. You can stay in the park; but, if you wanted to return to the Lodge, you must use the regular bus.

You're not hijacking at all. :)

I just figured I'd save the time and effort of you scanning stuff since it's already up.

I THINK that's most of them...there could be more of them over there but that's what I have on my immediate subscription list. But there is always TONS of discussion going on about AKV right here:

Enjoy!

I have been lurking on this thread for several weeks now. I love it! I was recently able to book AKL for 3 nights this April. I am travelling w/DD 13 & 17, & AKL will be a surprise for them. I was wondering if anyone had any great ideas of how I could actually surprise them until we checked in. We will go to MGM the day of arrival, then check in mid-day. We always visit AKL, so maybe I will just tell them we are visiting again!;) Does anyone have any surprise ideas for me?:cloud9:

i think your idea of telling them you are just visitng it again is a great idea! or you could schedule to eat at boma that day and say you are just going for lunch/dinner etc. good luck!

We are leaving for AKL on Saturday of this week and we can't wait!!! I have one question though....can we bring toys to play with in the pools? Like a blow up raft and a sponge ball, etc?

Please let me know if anyone can!!!

Thanks!

How is this for karma? Things have been crazy at work lately & my WDW vacation in May is not coming soon enough. So, today I got the brilliant :scratchin idea of adding a few days to the start of my vacation. When I got home from work and got on the computer :surfweb: , the first thing that I see on my email is that Jet Blue is running a 2 day sale. When I go on the Jet Blue website, the cost of my flights was actually higher than when I booked.... But, when I looked at the flights for the days before, I found that the flights were much cheaper. So, I changed by flight down to 3 days earlier & guess what(!) even with the fee for the change, it is still costing me $20 less than my original flight. Next, I call WDW to see about starting my AKL Pool view reservation 3 days earlier. Well, when I talk to the CM, he said that he couldn't extend my pool view room & still keep my AP discount. So, I ask if there is another resort available. He finds that for the 3 days (unfortunately not the whole trip) there are Savanna view bunkbed rooms available with the AP rate. So now I am very excited!! I have a savanna view room for the first 3 days of my trip and a pool view room for the remaining 8 days!

The best part of this is that I wanted a savanna view room but couldn't get the AP discount for my travel dates & the AP discount pool view was just too tempting to pass up! :dance3:

Congrats Donald! I'm sure you're going to love it! :cool1:

I have to admit, I am going to ADORE working with the IPO! They e-mailed me today and I e-mailed back, with contact information, which restaurants which days we were looking at (and times), that we wanted the Sunrise Safari, everything!

Don e-mailed me back, he's already got everything booked!! I'm SO excited to not have to deal with Dining reservations myself. That's like a dream come true for me  especially since they even spelled my name wrong our last trip and finding our reservations at check in was a nightmare the first night! (I'm Abbott, they spelled it Ebote :confused3 )

I'm just doing a dance here... I can't help it!

The ball is probably okay; the raft is not. I don't think they allow them in any of the pools at WDW.

...I hear ya.....do you know how many times they've spelled 'Marino' wrong???....'Morino', 'Merino', 'Moreno', 'Mareno',.....:confused3

I think your idea of telling them you are just visiting it again is a great idea! Or, you could schedule to eat at Boma that day and say you are just going for lunch/dinner etc.... good luck!

...I was goning to suggest the SAME thing....perhaps, say that there is a NEW treasure hunt-type activity that is starting on the day you arrived and you were lucky enough to be picked.....:rolleyes1

Thanks for the surprise ideas, heatherlynn & kimmar! I like both of them! I think I might incorporate a treasure hunt w/dinner at Boma's! My kids will love it! 24 days to go!:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
