I've heard in the past that the Podcast group flies into LAX from Orlando and the traffic and travel time to Disneyland awfull. Just curious, why doesn't the group fly into Orange County - John Wayne instead? Half the distance and half the traffic.

It's probably a lot more difficult, if not impossible, to find direct flights from Orlando to John Wayne because it is a much smaller, more "locals" airport.

Everything Simon said is true. It is often more expensive as well because it is a such a smaller airport than LAX. It is still worth looking into though, because there are sometimes deals to be found!

The travel time to Disneyland from LAX really isn't that bad if you don't arrive during peak traffic hours. 30 - 45 minutes. Even then, if you take the DL Express Bus, you are riding in a load of comfort. It's a nice rest.

Choosing your airport is all about what you find important in flights. If non-stops are your preference, it is most often LAX that will meet your needs.

I head out to the Brea/Fullerton area (near Anaheim) for work fairly often. In the past SNA (John Wayne) flights were much more expensive than those going to LAX. For whatever reason that's no longer true, most of the times the prices seem to be pretty close right now.

However, there are still about 10x more non-stops, and 30x more total flight options on any given day heading into LAX. Hence, I will still usually fly in/out of LAX as the extra time on the road in SoCal is less than any stop/layover, and is usually less than the schedule disruption of trying to find a non-stop flight that works into SNA. Of course, SoCal driving doesn't scare me, if that were more of a concern then it may play into airport selection as well.

Besides, coming from a midwest city it's a great travel moment when you see the razor wire coils around the freeway signs to keep the local hoodlums from vandalizing them. I don't recall seeing that on trips where I landed at SNA instead of at LAX;).

Also, reference to more recent Podcasts, the ABD trip in April the start point was LA/Hollywood - thus LAX.

We flew Philly to LAX for that trip, other airports were more expensive or not available for non stop direct packages.

Orange County - John Wayne airport is relatively close to Disneyland and I've heard that the traffic isn't bad at all. We checked prices out of Houston for both LAX and OC-JW (SNA) and they were nearly the same. There weren't quite as many flights, but there we're still a very good selection. All of the majors fly in there. Delta, American, Continental.

I guess I should have checked. There are no non-stop flights into SNA from Orlando. I checked SNA from Dallas, Houston and Atlanta and found sevaral non-stop flights at very good prices. Well never mind.

If we are going to DLR we ALWAYS fly into SNA. But, we are in Denver, so the non-stops to there are plentiful, and Frontier flies into there and often has great rates on flights. I haven't flown into LAX in years because of the ease of SNA for those trips.

I have posted this before about SNA, but be aware on your departing flight, if you are at all sensitive to take offs (my least favorite part of a flight), they have to gain a crazy amount of altitude in a very short time due to noise regulations. Makes take offs a bit intense for me:eek:

We live in SoCal and prefer to go through John Wayne when headed to WDW (we're actually closer to Ontario airport). We get great rates with Southwest and we love the way the airport is set up. However, there are no non-stop from SNA with SW or Orlando, which is something we're OK with. If the non-stop was important to us, we'd probably just use LAX, too. Like Nancy & others said, it's all in your preferences.

I flew on American Airlines from Orlando to Orange County in April, with a change in Dallas. When I bought the ticket in September 2009, the one-way fare was only $115, including taxes. This was for a cruise out of San Pedro, followed by a couple of days at Disneyland.
