I've given up television. What I've gained. . .

It's not a New Years Resolution, I stopped watching television a little over a year ago. I'm not fanatic about it, I still have 2 TVs in the house. DDs still watch a few PBS shows and DH watches the news. However, my old habit of turning on the tube once the kids were in bed and just vegetating in front of whatever was on for 2 to 3 hours each evening is long gone!

What do I do instead? I spend more time in our bedtime routine with our 2 DDs, playing, talking, and reading. After they are in bed, I mostly read and talk to DH. I used to complain that I never had time to read, now I read several books a week. :D

I've also stopped listening to the radio during my commute to and from work. I've come to enjoy the solitude and relative silence. If I try to listen to the radio now, the constant inane chatter of the DJ's gets on my nerves and I turn it off again.

Has anyone else kicked the plug-in drug?

I don't watch TV on a regular basis. It just doesn't satisfy me. Now I spend more time on the DIS. :p  I do tend to spend more time with the family but they are still hooked on the tube. I'm thinking of starting a family night at home where TV is banned and we spend time playing a game together.

I took the TV and Playstation away from my children this year. I was having a hard time with my son rushing to get through with homework. My children can only watch tv or play playstation on the weekends.

I also don't turn on the TV during the day and my 19 month old will turn the TV off when someone turns it on. I don't want to make the same mistakes with him that I feel I did with my other two children. They were watching too much TV.

Now when they come home on Fridays they forget about these things and are playing outside or are doing creative play.

Doreen, I have to say it is the best thing I ever did for my children. Our night time rountine is calmer and our children love having chapter books read to them.

I will have to decide what I am going to do this summer in regards to the TV.

As a general rule, I'm not a TV watcher anyways...only one show a week. I don't miss it.

My kids are not allowed to play video games or on the computer during the week

I get addicted to the news, so I try to limit myself! I know I've watched too much when everyone starts calling me for news updates!

I watch tv after DD goes to bed at 7. But I only watch certain shows and then turn it off. I have it on for an hour during the day to watch GH and that is all. The constant noise drives me nuts! :)

I listen to "stories" on XM radio when I'm in my car and I will turn on the television in the evenings but I'm usually DISing and not watching.

When my dh is away I have the television on more because it keeps monsters away (I'll bet you didn't know that but it does ;) )

My husband is a television addict in the evenings and on the weekends.

Sounds like giving up television has given you more time for yourself and your family. That's great :)

We too stopped letting our boys watch TV & use electronics during the week. We started this mid-school year last year. My then 7 year old was overheard telling his then 8 yr old brother that it was "an experiment" but that we won't be doing it very long. He even announced in Aug that we wouldn't be doing that again this year. (If it crosses his mind, it crosses his lips.) Well, guess what - there is still no TV/electronics on school nights. It makes life so much simpler. I couldn't get them to do their homework or out the door for their activities. They did ask how they could earn the TV/electronics. I told them straight "A"s on report cards. And then it would only be on a limited basis and removed if grades drop. Also told DS #2 his "conduct" grades have to be "consistant" in all areas. There are about a dozen conduct areas that are graded "consistant", "occassionally" & "not demonstrated". DS1 is always "consistant" inall areas. Self control is a bit more of a challange for DS2.
