I'll call this budget related since I can't afford to buy a new computer with a bigger hard drive. :rotfl2:

I have a LOT of music, probably close to 200 GB of it. The hard drive on my computer is nearly maxed out, so I need to do something about it soon. I have an external hard drives that I could transfer the music over to. However, how can I transfer music over to iTunes and my iPod if it is on an external hard drive?

If anyone can help me, that would be awesome. I'm a total goof ball when it comes to technical stuff, and I just can't figure this out. Thanks. :)

First off you should go to wherever you have your music (found under itunes->edit->preferences and its right at the top in the big white box) and transfer it over to your external hard drive. This is what i do, I have a folder on my external hard drive named ITUNES. So go to your computer and MOVE, dont copy, everything that is in that folder over to your external and put it in a folder there (ITUNES or whatever you want to call it). This might take a while. Then when that is done go to your itunes and click
edit->preferences ->change (its next to the box you looked at earlier) and make the folder on your external your default location for itunes to look for the music.

Make sure your external is always connected to your computer first before you open itunes and everything will work the same. Thats it. It's pretty simple.

Yup, as long as you have your external plugged in when you use itunes you won't have any problems with transferring all your music to your external.

This may also be a good "just in case" back up move for all your music too. Every so often copy your music to the external drive. Never know when the computer might decide to go kapoot. Might need it one day to build your library back up.

Thanks everyone for the tips! I already have most of my music backed up to an external drive, but I was confused about the setting in iTunes. For whatever reason, I find iTunes difficult to understand.
