I can't see a renegade league starting up and making it again like it did in the 70's for the most part; can you?
The biggest problem in my eyes is the cost of things now.
It would surprise me to see Brett jump to go with his dad's league.

Re the WHA, do you think that a new professional hockey league can survive? The NHL seems to be having a hard time as it is, especially in the United States and teams have come and gone in Canada as well. The competition from other professional sports such as basketball and football seems formidable. People already say that the NHL is too big and the talent is too watered down. It seems funny to me that Bobby Hull would bring in the WHA at this point in time but what do all you experts think?

Not to sure how it will work out but if there is no CBA and the players want to play and the WHA is there it may just fly not sure about locations or anything yet. Maybe I will do a search and see what I can find about it.

Lynda, your thoughts mirror many of mine as well as add some valid ones I missed.
It may succeed for a short time as there will definitely be a curiosity factor. Long term, I don't think so. With that said, I can't blame them from trying. If more people can make a living playing a sport they love, more power to them.

Sorry adam but the Flames are going to bring home the cup 15 years after they won it the first time agains my beloved HABS. As for the WHA there are to be teams in Dallas Detroit Toronto Hamilton Halifax and a few others. Could be good for the league if the NHL doesn't get the CBA worked out.

Thanks for posting the website link, DSNY FN! Very interesting! I didn't realize it was so far along. And yes, I didn't think about players playing for the new league if the CBA doesn't work out.

I was surprised to see that Toronto has a WHA team because I hadn't heard anything at all about it. Should be interesting to watch things play out over the next few months!

What a great game last night Tampa has finally met a team that has them on their heels. The Flames really took it to them last night and had 1 SHG and could have had a few more. Can't wait to see game 2 should be a good one. Hopefully we see a sweep and Calgary can win it at home for thier fans. As for the WHA the old Tornto Torros which was the teams name in the original WHA is still around I hope they bring back a few other old team names from those days. Just an FYI from my cousin who lives in Winnipeg they are getting a new rink in the downtown core talks have it at a 20 thousand plus seat arena.

With that kind of investment, Winnipeg must be pretty sure it's going to get a team.

I want to see Calgary take the cup as well but know that the next few games won't be as easy as last nights. Tampa had an off night.

Ya there is a big BUZZ around the city right now and they are sure they are getting something they may also be getting a Junior A team there was talk of but a 20 thousand plus seat rink for a juniour team is a little much I think which leads me to believe that there is definateley something in the works. Maybe even a WHA team.

I even went to a few Toro games (I know, showing my age; I'm the one that wears the Dave Keon Leaf jersey, remember?!!!)! Well, we'll have to keep our ears open for more buzz about the new league; that's very exciting! But again, I just hope that the league can survive.

It would be great for cities like Hamilton to finally get a professional hockey team! And if the Flames win the Cup, I'm sure that will only help the WHA's cause with regards to their Canadian cities!

And yes, wasn't that a great game yesterday?!!!! It should be a wonderful series. How nice that would be for the Flames to win the Cup at home!

Ah the good old days eh Lynda hehe I am a Dryden fan from way back when he started in the league. Prior to that I was a Bobby Orr fan. I became a goalie after watching Dryden play.

Darren, you must have been happy to hear that Dryden has left the "enemy" as the Habs fans say and has gone into politics, although I'm not sure that's the lesser evil!

As a Leafs fan, I'm sorry Dryden couldn't do what he wanted with the team. I think things might have been very different if he had.

BTW, all my friends loved Bobby Orr and had crushes on him; I admired him as a player of course but couldn't get past the fact that he was a big, bad Bruin!

Ya I was an Orr fan not a Bruins fan in mymind anyhow but my dad told me I was cheering on the B's because of Orr. I am glad Dryden left the Leafs but his choice to join Martin was just as bad IMHO hehehe.
