It's Taylor Ham

I was in a grocery store on the outer banks (a Food Lion) and saw some Taylor Ham in the deli department. I commented to my DH about it and the store employee heard me. She laughed and said they have to keep it in stock to keep the NJ vacationers happy, and that she tried some because of all the brouhaha but wasn’t overly impressed.

I've never had this before but you all are really tempting me to complete the purchase online with Taylor. Is it really that good?
It is a dense slightly spicy meat, like a dry bologna type. It is best fried, and some folks do fry bologna. The "spice" is not too much (I don't like spicy) and why it's good with some mustard on a roll.

It is NOT like Spam or Scrapple which are very loose meat that are soft for lack of better word.

It buckles when fried like a bologna so many do these cuts so it fries flat. The thin sliced is good for a breakfast side meat and the thick sliced is good for the sandwich.

I’ve never tried spam, bought some 2 years ago but still too chicken.
I made spam musubi (it was sold all over Hawaii it’s like a spam sushi) when we went. At Aulani they would make it into a Mickey ear shape. I couldn’t eat it there because it’s made with a soy sauce marinade on the spam and I eat GF so I decided to make it when we got home with GF soy sauce. It was surprisingly delicious and all my kids liked it which is rare occurrence in my house. My friend is Korean and grew up eating it and it’s one of her cooking staples.

Thanks very much for the info. That helps a lot. I think I might just do it for the experience. :)

I have seen that before and was thinking of making it that way. No soy sauce here, just tamari (I can’t tell the difference).

You East-coasters are weird - and I married on of y'all. DW is from Boston. We had food delivered to our DVC one time and she insisted we get Steak-ums

I don't know what that is, but now that I have had a taste I can assure you - it's not steak.

LOL. Central Jersey-raised gal here. We had Steak-Umms nearly every weekend for lunch, either Saturday or Sunday. I thought they were awesome. Made them for my husband (Midwesterner) when we first got married, and he was like WTH? Never had them since.

Hmmm....I should look into them again -- it's been over 32 years.

I usually buy the competing cheaper brand, Case's, pre-sliced.

But never Steak-umm. Those are chopped, formed, and sliced. I want REAL thinly sliced beef for my cheesesteaks.

I grew up on the jersey shore and my wife grew up in Northern NJ and this argument comes up all the time....and the kids know it's pork roll if they want me to get it for them
What usually ends up happening is I ask her look at the packaging and show me where the word "ham" appears....hint: it doesn't. Ps...its a sub...for those in the other thread.
