Woo hoo! I found my first paczkis this weekend--custard and raspberry. :thumbsup2 Boy, I'm glad they're only around for a limited time or I'd weigh a ton. :rotfl2:

For those that haven't had a paczki before, it's like a jelly filled doughnut but they weigh about a pound each. :rotfl2: Well, maybe not a pound, but they're pretty heavy. It's a traditional pre-Lent treat.

From wikipedia:

Although Bismarcks and Jelly-filled doughnuts are the more commonly used names for the pastry in the United States, Polish immigrants have popularized this type of preserve-filled doughnut in some parts of the country, especially in Hamtramck, an enclave of Detroit. Hamtramck is known to be the only U.S. city to organize an annual Paczki-Day (Fat Tuesday) Parade, and lines can be seen up to 24 hours before the deep-fried delights go on sale at the numerous local bakeries. Many bars in town open early in the morning, and provide free entertainment, a party atmosphere, and even Paczki-clad mascots. The Paczki-Day celebration in this town is even larger than many areas have for St. Patrick's Day. Here, prunes are considered the traditional filling, but many others are used as well, including lemon, strawberry, Bavarian cream, blueberry, custard, raspberry, and rarely apple. Due to French influence, paczki are eaten on Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) rather than on Fat Thursday. In the large Polish community of Chicago, and other large cities across the Midwest, paczki day is also celebrated annually by immigrants and locals alike.

LOL I saw these at the grocery yesterday. I'd never heard of them before. Apparently I need to buy some.

Thanks for posting this, I think. I can't wait to have one and it is a good thing they are only around once a year!

Umm...yeah, you do. Although you might be better off just never tasting them. :rotfl2:

DH laughed at me because I went back to the bakery part of the grocery to get pita bread and came back with just paczkis. I was so excited that the boring old pita bread just went right out of my head. :lmao:

jbmom: I consider it my PSA. Enjoy!

I take it they're different from krispy kreme jelly/custard filled? We don't have polish food in these parts.

Oh...SO much better. They are really, really bad for you but they taste SO good.

Why oh why did you have to remind me it's that time of year again? Now I need to go out and get some apricot ones. My waistline thanks you!

I saw some advertised last weekend and thought "It's waaay to early for paczki's already!"

Not to early , it is shove Tuesday next week already.

Which to many, is Pancake day. Easter is early this year.

The idea behind these is to use up all you staples in the house in the old days to prepare for a fast for lent.

Not sure where the name came from and they are not like a normal jelly donut they are very heavy and like someone said very fatting....:rotfl2:

We call them that in Canada too !!

Now Pancake Day I have heard of. I don't know how I missed Paczki all these years.

Hey, hey, I'm just trying to share the joy! And, if everyone else gains weight, I'll be able to blend in. ;)
