It's Official: last year of Osborne Lights

We have seasonal passes and try to see the lights at least four or five times during the Christmas season. I am not usually a "soft, mushy" person but the lights make me teary-eyed every time. My husband, daughter and I just have so much fun with the lights.
Our passes are up for renewal on November 6th and we will renew so we can get one more season of lights.
But after that I think I need to take a break from Disney. I love Disney! We are a Disney family. And I am looking forward to Star Wars land. But until then, too much is going away and it all makes me sad.

Disney/MGM Studios will always be my favorite park. :(

So glad we're heading to see them this year! It might seem small, but it's been on my bucket list. I hope as many people as possible get to see them before they're taken down.

Breezy Osborne has made her official statement and it can be seen here:

Soon after the Arkansas Supreme Court ruled that our Christmas Lights Display go dark (around 1994) Dad received a phone call from a Director of Walt Disney World welcoming the lights to their then MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios). At first we all thought it was a joke...until we started meeting everyone in person. The original Director that called Dad has been there since day one, even attending Dad's funeral, and with the utmost grace, compassion, and loyalty he was the person that flew to Little Rock to meet Mom and I this week as we found out that this is the last year for the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights.

Twenty years ago, at age 15, my greatest childhood memory that had been loved & cherished by so many beyond the state was now going to be at Disney World. I'm pretty sure the most excited person on the planet was my Dad. You might as well have told him that he was going to meet Elvis it made that much of an impact. He often said he got to be a kid again, and at the same time MILLIONS and MILLIONS of people from around the world have been able to experience this light display.

Today, I spent a few hours speaking with Media and you seriously cannot express what this display is all about unless you've been under the glow. There is something so magical about these lights-there has been since day one in 1986. I will be honest...I have spent a lot of time today reading many posts, blogs, comments, links, and the tears have been massive. My first tears came from knowing this is Riley's last year to see what my childhood (and so many others) has been about. Its one of the last physical connections to Dad. Then the tears have shifted to reading how this light display has brought immense joy to so many as they made it their family tradition every year.

A part of my heart is torn today-yet let me set the record straight. I am not angry. I am reliving a part of my grieving process surrounding Dad. And at the same time I'd love to share a perspective that many might not realize...Did you know that our light display is the only real story that has ever been a part of Disney? Think about it. Besides knowing about Walt himself...this is a REAL heartfelt REAL story attached to a Walt Disney World attraction. Its not a made up story. How dang amazing is that?! You never ever hear of Attractions hanging around for 20 years (except Dad's favorite, Its a Small World ride...just kidding, he groaned when I wanted to ride over and over and over and over LOL).

We have met INCREDIBLE friends in the last twenty years. I mean...I N C R E D I B L E!! Friendships that will last a lifetime. Stories that we laugh at daily. And family. We actually spent 25 years at Disney together. Yes, that is correct. I am 35 years old and the first ten years of my life I spent Christmas in Arkansas. We had already started a family tradition of Christmas at Disney BEFORE the lights and even stayed at the same hotel for the last twenty five years. It gives me chills thinking about it. Cousins and friends that traveled with us were not even born when we started the tradition. This experience has literally lasted a lifetime.

Over the next few months I'll be posting a ton of memories and stories that might not have been told just yet. And I'm so excited for Christmas this year. We plan to immerse ourselves in the lights and love, and especially the LIGHT that Riley gives to all of us. So far she remembers the lights from our 2014 trip, and just like she's understanding the back of my Spectacle of Lights shirt we will commemorate this last Holiday season truly living in the moment.

If you've ever wanted to see the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights...GO. This year's dates are November 6-January 3. I have a feeling this year will be brighter than ever.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful story. I wish that I could shake your hand and thank your family for the wonderful tradition! I am sure your father is very proud. I will be there for the first lighting on Nov. 6th. I plan on visiting them at least 3x that trip. Maybe even more now.

I truly hope that this is the one thing that fans will not stand for. I hope an uproar hits mainstream media. I hope that Disney is so pressured that they open something like the lights of winter back at Epcot. I fully intend on pushing it. I know Disney too well, to know that even under scrutiny they will not back down now with the "official announcement." But more than any of this, I hope that the Osbourne lights find a new home. I will make the trip!

I think if you love the Osborne lights you need to contact guest services and tell them that you want the lights to remain. Obviously, they will have to be moved to make way for the new lands. But, put them somewhere else! They are too much of a tradition and too beautiful to just do away with.

I see the point that sometimes things have to go away for new things to come.

For me, this has made me realize that I am not excited about Star Wars and I am not definitely not excited about Toy Story Land.

I just went back to the DPB announcement. There are now 4 pages of complaints. When was the last time any article got near that amount of comments? Get ready for the wrath Disney!!

I am sure Off Kilter or The Adventures Club came close.
Once Disney makes up its mind, nothing changes it.
At least that is my observation.

We arrive on the 3rd...the last night, so happy we will get to see them. I'm sure it will be a crazy night though

We were not planning a trip this year, but since this my husband's all time favorite Christmas/Disney show we are gonna count our penny's and make a last Osborne Lights trip
Hope we find more than penny's in the Tink jar ;)

I'm so glad I convinced my mom to take a short trip with me to WDW in November. I have always wanted to see the lights. I only have one night that we will be in DHS and we have the Minnie Holiday dinner booked with the Fantasmic package…now I'm thinking maybe we should skip Fantasmic so that we can spend more time at the lights. I can always see Fantasmic the next time I'm at WDW. How long do most people spend enjoying the lights?

I'm so frustrated with myself...we had our family trip scheduled for Dec. 17-23 but changed it to mid January thinking we could do the Christmas trip next year. Within days of booking our non refundable flights, Disney announced pulling the plug on the lights :headache:(which was a must do for my oldest son.) Because it's cheaper than rescheduling our family's planned trip, just my son and I are making a super short trip just to see the lights in early December. :yay:

So I have a question...Are the lights turned on every night of the season or select nights only? I don't want to make this trip and not get to see the lights!
