Dropped DD13 and DS11 at camp on Sunday afternoon. They were scheduled to be there for a week. Monday morning I receive a call at 9am......"This is the camp. DS11 is in an ambulance on his way to the hospital. His arm is obviously broken."

DH drove the 2hour trip in 1hour 15 min.
I'd called ahead to the hospital and given verbal consent for them to begin treatment as soon as DS arrived. That was a great move because we arrived to find DS hooked up to a morphine drip. He had a dopey smile and a huge ice pack on his arm.
"Hey mom, wanna see?"
He lifted the ice pack and I thought I'd puke. There was not any broken skin or bruises but the shape of his forearm was just.....well....it was just WRONG. All dented in and ......ugh!
He snapped the radius ....like a pencil ....and bowed the ulna.
They sedated him so that they could reset the bones and now he's home hopped up on Tylenol 3. I have to admit that at times he's really entertaining. He babbles on about nothing at all.
:p
So much for my week without kids.
He wasn't even there 24 hours! Talk about not getting your moneys worth!!

Glad to know that he's okay. But bummer about your week. I know how much I looked forward to the kids going to camp and all the things I was going to do. Think the camp would refund your money! LOL!

Sorry to hear about your son. At least you found some humor in it.

My youngest daughter went to camp a few weeks ago. It is a YMCA adventure camp. My oldest daughter works there, it is only 20 minutes away. Anyway, during training in early summer they asked me and youngest daughter to come over so they could ask a parent and a camper some questions.

One of the things they said, is how would you want us to handle "THE PHONE CALL"!

I told them, to just tell me right away if it is an emergency, in their calmest voice possible.

If they were getting kicked out - I still want to know if it is an emergency. Get the emergency of the health of the child out right away.

Maybe once he gets his arm is not in so much pain, he can return another week to camp this summer. Broken arms are no fun for kids, at first they think it is cool, but it is very painful, I hope the tylenol 3 works.

OUCH!!!!! How did it happen? Will they give you a partial refund?

I hope your son is able to get off the painkillers soon and feeling much better.

And I hope your other son is able to enjoy himself without his brother along.

Sorry to hear about your son's accident.

Yeah, sorry about the broken arm.....OUCH!!!

I went away one week, over the summer but, as a high school junior entering senior year and, went to NY! Far from home!! I got hurt the first day! I waited tho on reporting my injury and, when they finally took me to the hospital, I couldn't tell my parents....I let a perfect stranger tell my Mom, over the phone! They didn't come to get me and, we only talked briefly after I was released. Needless to say, besides not eating the rest of the week, I had fun!! :p (my injury was a bruised/swollen stomach...weird, I know but, it was co-ed softball and, I was pitching and, a GUY slammed (hit) the ball right into my stomach. Sure wish NY would play 16 inch SOFTball, rather than the hardball with mitts that they play!!!) ;)

Quick recovery for your DS!! I FEEL his pain!!!

DS was playing a tag game and slipped on the grass.
He put out his arm to break his fall.....and broke his arm.

The camp did an excellent job of getting word to us. They called all the numbers that we provided (home, cell, office) until they reached me.....I was enroute to work when it happened. The counselor was calm and to the point when I spoke with him. Of course after I hung up the phone I burst into tears.....but only for a minute.

It's doubtful that there will be a refund. It would be nice if they offered a raincheck.

The camp nurse spoke to DD and she is still at camp having a great time. We will pick her up on Friday and then she can be DS's nurse. HA! It will be payback for when she broke her arm last year and DS had to help her out!!

Poor kid. :( My dd is just getting over the same thing.

My son had that same kind of break when he was six years old.
He actually had to do surgery to reset the bones!

I'm glad he's entertaining...

Did they do surgery right away?

My dd had "surgery" too, all they did was put her out so they could set it as best they could. They did that right away, not soon enough for her, but that day.
They said if she was any older they would have had to go in and put metal plates and screws and all kind of stuff.
Truthfully, when I see the x-rays of how it's healing, I think they should have, but the doctor assures me that she will be fine.
She spent 8 weeks in a cast, and 5 weeks not in a cast but not able to do anything other than walking or swimming. At the last x-ray it still doesn't look right, but he said again that she will be fine and that it will heal up eventually.

Actually, he got hurt fooling around on gymnastics equipment. We had to get to call the pediatrician (not an easy feat since it was the first night of passover). Couldn't get hold of pediatrician, so I called my friend who is a pediatrician. He told me to go to ER.

It was a long time for ER to be seen. It was after midnight when the attending orthodpedist came in. He took one look at it and scheduled the surgery. Since the surgery rooms were closed for the night, he was admitted overnight. Surgery was performed at 6 or 7 am the next morning.

Poor baby, poor you!! Hope he heals quickly.

You just can't make plans if you have kids

My dd broke her arm one summer (jumping on a trampoline) and had to have surgery. They did do the surgery pretty much right away. But Ashli had a major blood vessel lodged between the broken bones and they couldn't set them until they went in a moved the blood vessel. Then since the break was so nasty they had to put pins in her arm and told us her arm may stop growing at the size it was right then due to the location of the break. We were nervous about it and they monitored her arm until they could tell that it was indeed growing and at the same rate as it should be. I have always been very thankful that she didn't have that complication.

I LOL at your son being entertaining while on pain killers. I hope he's not in too much pain with his arm in the next week or two.

You are very lucky with the painkillers.....my then 7 yo DS threw-up everytime he took pain meds with his broken arm. Then when he came out of the anesthesia after the surgery, they couldn't do it any other way it was so bad, he threw-up some more. First time I realized that not all nurses can handle this-lol! Anyhow he had pins holding the arm together for 3 weeks and then they pulled them out and he was in a cast for the rest of the summer! Ugh the poor thing it was the longest summer for him, right before baseball all-stars. The team was great he still went to every game and proudly wore his all-star hat! And all he did was fall the wrong way on it off of a tire swing! Good luck with your DS.....pixie dust.
