JULY 23RD PART 6: WRAPPING UP DAY ONE
Alright, here it is. The BIG moment. After waiting almost 4 hours, we were FINALLY on our way to our room!!
Im apologizing in advance for these room pictures. They are not pretty. But we all know what a Polynesian room looks like, right? If not, march your butt over to the Resorts Board and then come back and finish reading this. The rest of us will wait here for you. And talk about you behind your back while you're gone.
Okay, are you back? And now we ALL know what a Polynesian room looks like?
Good, lets move on.
As soon as I stepped into our new home for the week, I made a beeline for the patio. Well, I actually stopped at the sliding glass doors. It was raining again, and the patio was getting really wet. But heres the view
AHHHHHH. Even with the rain, its wonderful!
I know that this goes against my desire to keep everything chronological, but I couldnt just post that one gloomy picture. So, here are some pictures from the patio that I took later in the week when the weather was MUCH nicer.
You couldnt actually see Space Mountain from inside the room, but if you stood out on the patio and turned towards the MK, you had a perfect view. It was lovely. It was also a lot of fun to watch boats coming and going out of the marina. It was especially funny watching people attempt to dock their Sea Raycers. It proved to be quite the challenge for many. Although, I shouldnt laugh because Im sure I would be terrible at it too.
Heres a picture of the beds (kind of). Like I said, I wasnt really too concerned with taking room pictures.
This was on our bed when we arrived. It was the first of many towel animals we received throughout the trip. Our Mousekeeper was AWESOME. I know that I wrote her name down somewhere in my trip report notes, but I cant find it right now. When I do, I will be sure to post it because she deserves a shout-out.
Heres the desk/tv/drawers already cluttered with our stuff. We just came into the room and threw everything down, not really caring what it looked like.
Heres a random picture of the sink in the bathroom. I love the little tiki guys on the lamps. Every morning as I was brushing my teeth, I would look at those guys and get the warm, fuzzy Im at Disney feeling. It was wonderful. And it definitely made waking up at the crack of dawn to get to Rope Drop more enjoyable.
After hastily snapping these shots, I flopped down onto the bed and FINALLY took that nap that I had been dying for. I think my family might have gone to the pool while I was sleeping
.I cant really remember. But my sister had been aching to go to the pool, so Im pretty sure thats what they did.
They woke me up around 6:30 and we headed over to Captain Cooks for dinner. I love that the GCH is such a quick walk from Fiji. It made filling up our refillable mugs super easy. Im not saying that the walk to the GCH is a horrible burden from any of the other buildings- the Polynesian isnt nearly as spread out as some people like to think. Unless youre in Tahiti. Dad and I started joking that the people at the very edge of Tahiti arent staying at the Polynesian, theyre staying at the Transportation and Ticket Center. Its a bit of a hike from the very end of Tahiti to the GCH. But hey, youre at Disney
whats a bit more walking, right?
Anyway, what was I talking about? Oh, right. Dinner.
I love Captain Cooks. As Im writing this, Hall and Oates You Make My Dreams Come True just popped up on shuffle on my itunes. (Yes, I am 20 and I have Hall and Oates on my itunes. Im cool like that.) Its fitting because Captain Cooks does make my dining dreams come true. Everything is so good that its hard to decide what to order.
On this particular day, I opted for the Grilled Cheese with a side of chips.
Sooooooooooooo good. OMG. And if youve never tried Captain Cooks homemade chips, (1)What is your life? And (2) GO EAT THEM RIGHT NOW. You are missing out. Those wonton-y ones are pretty much the greatest chips in existence. I cant describe how they taste with words other than OMG SO FREAKING GOOD.
I also bought one of these bad boys for later. Youve always gotta keep one handy while at Disney. You never know when you might get the Mickey Rice Crispy Treat craving. It comes on fast, and before you know it, youve already devoured the entire thing.
After dinner, we stopped by the room really quick to drop off the leftover chips because, well, you cant just throw that kind of deliciousness away. It was then that I did something I never thought Id ever do
I debated not going back to the Magic Kingdom with my family to just stay in for the night.
Yeah, I know. Crazy, right? I was in a weird mood that evening. I was tired and having to deal with the crazy fireworks crowd wasnt appealing to me at all.
But somehow I wound up taking the boat back to the MK with everyone else. Evidently I am easily persuaded. The boat ride was uneventful
up until we started to dock.
Yknow how when docking, the boats kind of swing back and forth a few times before finally settling against the dock? Well, right as the boat began its final swing towards the dock, a little girl who was probably about three years old dropped her stuffed giraffe into the water. The boat captain just happened to be standing right near her, and as the boat was closing in on the dock, he quickly reached down and grabbed the giraffe out of the water, removing his arm *right* as the boat made contact with the dock. As he handed the partially wet giraffe to the little girls mother, the entire boat broke out into applause.
It all happened really quickly, and I thought he was nuts for sticking his arm down there. I was bracing myself for blood, guts, and gore as the boat smashed the poor guys arm against the dock. I wanted to shout out ARE YOU FREAKING CRAZY? A STUFFED GIRAFFE IS NOT AN EQUAL TRADEOFF FOR LOSING A LIMB!!! But apparently this guy had some Indiana Jones instincts in him, and thankfully, he escaped unscathed. So four for you, Boat Captain! You go, Boat Captain!
I do wonder what ended up happening with the giraffe. I mean, I hope that little girls mother gave it a good washing before letting the girl have it. Arent there, like, toxins and stuff in the lagoon water? Yuck. I mean, it was nice of the boat captain to save it, but I think Id rather just buy my kid a new giraffe.
After witnessing the save of the day, we headed into the park and at my parents request, went straight over to Adventureland to ride Pirates of the Caribbean.
I love the tribal drum music that plays as you cross the bridge into Adventureland. It always makes me want to stop right in the middle of the path and dance. In fact, Im pretty sure Ive actually done that before. Honestly, if youve ever seen a strange girl dancing around at Disney, it was probably me. Or my long-lost evil twin.
So we headed over to Pirates. This picture of the sign is blurry, but its the only picture of the ride I took so Im gonna post it anyway.
The posted wait time was 5 minutes, but we waited longer than that. And apparently we arrived during Poorly Behaved Little Kid Hour, because we were surrounded by them in line. Kids were screaming and running all over the place. There was a family with two little kids in front of us who were well-behaved thank god but every other kid in the building was going nuts. I feel like they ALL must have stopped for a Dole Whip or something right before getting in line, and were now ridiculously hyper from all of the sugar. I love kids, and Im not usually one to complain about them, but in this instance it was just too much. And unfortunately, the poor behavior of these kids wouldnt even be the worst behavior we experienced that night.
The actual ride went as expected. Im not really a huge fan of the ride (or the movies, for that matter). I like pirates, and I like the song, but the boats just seem to float sooooooooo slowly. Like, crank up the speed on these suckers, people! A ride about pirates should have a little more thrill to it. But I know its a classic, and I know that people would be really disappointed if they changed it, so dont change it and Ill just suck it up and ride it once a year to make my parents happy.
I do like the part where the cannons fire at you, though. It reminds me of my favorite part of an eye doctor appointment
the Glaucoma test. Getting air shot at me always makes me laugh hysterically. Its such a weird feeling.
After pillaging and plundering and rifling and looting, we decided to split up for a bit. Dad and I headed to find a spot to watch the new Summer Nightastic fireworks while Mom and Katie headed to Tomorrowland to ride Space Mountain with the fastpasses we had gotten earlier.
Dad and I found a spot right near the hub along the railing on the path towards Adventureland. Heres our view of the castle from where we were standing.
It was only 8:15 when we got to our spot, so we had a while to wait. I think this was when Dad and I had a conversation about how we hadnt seen anyone else wearing my Forever Young t-shirt. We had both expected there to be TONS of people wearing them, but nope. Mine was the only one we saw all day. It was also during this time when I spotted a girl standing near us who was wearing the Burlap TOMS Shoes that I REALLY want. Im kind of obsessed with TOMS. If youve never heard of them, I strongly suggest you check them out. Basically, the whole idea behind the company is that for every pair of shoes you buy, they donate a pair to a child in need, which is a GENIUS concept and Ive become really passionate about their whole organization. And the shoes are super comfortable. Youll be seeing pictures of me wearing them later in the trip. Anyway, I thought about going over to the girl and asking her how she likes them, but I realized that I would seem like the biggest creeper ever. So I didnt. I just admired her TOMS from afar.
Around 8:45, Mom and Katie joined us to wait some more. It was a bit of a dull wait, but I enjoyed just listening to the Main Street Area Music Loop and watching the Castle change colors. Its so magical at night.
The Main Street Electrical Parade was scheduled to begin at 9:00, but because we were in the hub, we had to wait a bit longer. A lot of you already know this from my pre-trip report, but I was NOT AT ALL excited about the return of the MSEP. I am the biggest SpectroMagic fangirl. My love for SpectroMagic could give the Twi-hards a run for their money. SpectroMagic is just
I dont really know how to describe how attached I am to that parade. I mean, its Disney to me. Whenever I think of Disney, the On this magic niiiiiiiight lyric pops into my head, and I am reminded of the SpectroMen, and Chip and Dale playing the piano. And Ursula and the dancing ostriches and the Three Little Pigs. I could go on and on.
So on this particular evening, I was having a severe case of SpectroMagic separation anxiety. When they made the announcement that the MSEP would be starting in just a few minutes, I about lost it. I wanted to run out into the middle of the parade route, throw a tantrum, and demand that they pull out the SpectroMagic floats because the MSEP is just not acceptable. Granted, from where we were standing we wouldnt even really be able to see the parade, but I WANTED SPECTRO!!!
Unfortunately, my cries for change went unnoticed, and I was about to enter my very own electro-synthe-magnetic musical nightmare.
Disney, why must you start playing that AWFUL song what feels like hours before the parade actually arrives? I was sick of the do do dodo do do dodododododo after a minute of listening to it and I still had the ENTIRE PARADE ahead of me. I know there are MSEP die-hards who will kill me for saying this, but I cannot stand that song. Nobody needs to listen to anything that makes do do dodo sounds on repeat for 20 minutes.
Heres the one picture I took during the parade. You can see the top of one of the Alice in Wonderland floats over all of these peoples heads.
I mainly only took that picture because Katie has a terrible fear of butterflies, and I thought she should always remember that giant one. Oh, sisterly love
Anyway, once that nightmare was finally over, we still had some more time before the fireworks started. I think I spent that time ranting to my family about how much I hate the MSEP music. I also watched a stroller traffic jam develop. Disney has got to figure out a better way to manage crowd flow during the parade and fireworks. I mean, when we found our spot, we deliberately stood along the railing so that people could still get through. But the second the parade starts, all hell breaks loose and people start stopping in the middle of the paths causing major gridlock. And then crazy parents find it acceptable to use their strollers as battering rams. So yeah, thats pretty much what I watched for 20 minutes - People pushing and shoving and trying to jam themselves into spaces that werent meant for people to fit through.
Oh, and this was fun. About 10 minutes before the fireworks started, a large family came and squeezed in to stand right in front of us. I didnt mind them standing in front of us (fireworks are in the sky), but they were pretty much on top of us. I was pinned against the railing, standing on top of the cement curb thing at the base of the railing. There was a young couple that had been standing next to us the whole time, and the guy got shoved back so far that he had to climb over the railing to keep from completely losing his balance.
So I was upset (rightly, in my opinion) and started venting to Dad about how I am so sick of people showing up at the last minute and standing on top of us when weve been waiting for an hour and a half. Because we were all packed so close together, a teenage girl from the obnoxious family heard me and leaned over to her mother to tell her what I said. And the moms response to her daughter -This is Disney. This is what you do here. Yeah, this is DISNEY WORLD. It is not Squeeze-in-as-tightly-as-possible-and-suffocate-everyone-around-you World. God. I wanted to say something snarky so that the teenage girl would overhear and relay it to her mother, but they made the announcement that the fireworks would be starting shortly, so I decided just to relax and let it go.
My overall impression of the Summer Nighttastic fireworks was: VERY COOL. Being (partially) surrounded by fireworks was such a unique experience. And OMG. Theres a Pirates-themed section of the show where the Pirates attack the Castle and they actually shoot fireworks off of the Castle. It was so cool. I mean, it was a little heart-stopping at first to see the Castle have fire coming off of it, but it was amazing. I took video of the entire Pirate segment, but for whatever reason, I cant get that video off of my camera. All my other videos worked fine, but that one is being stubborn.
Here are a few pictures I took during the show. They arent the greatest, but whatevs. I have better pictures from later in the week.
After the fireworks ended, Mom and Katie headed off to ride some more rides (the park was open until 3:00 AM
they didnt stay that long though) and Dad and I headed back to the Polynesian. Of course, that was easier said than done when dealing with the Disney hordes. We slowly crept our way down Main Street, getting bumped into and run over and accidentally touched in awkward places the entire time. Dont you just love that? I mean, it wouldnt be a trip to Disney without a few random strangers touching my butt.
We let the hordes funnel us out of the park and joined the massive line for the boat back to the Polynesian. One of the boats arrived and filled up, but we were, like, 4 people away from making it on. While we were waiting for another boat, the Electrical Water Pageant pulled up to the Magic Kingdom. So, that happened. Normally I would have been really excited to see it, but on this day I was just not feeling it. All I wanted was to get on a boat, lie in bed, watch Stacy, and eat the leftover OMG SO FREAKING GOOD chips.
So the Water Pageant finishes, and at this point, a boat still hadnt shown up to take us home. There were people dressed up all PERSON-IN-CHARGE-like and they were on walkie-talkies radioing something to someone. And then after waiting a little longer, a boat FINALLY came. Only it wasnt the usual boats you see on the Seven Seas Lagoon or Bay Lake. I think it might have been one of the boats they use for the Wishes Cruises because it had a pirate flag hanging in the front. Dont Captain Hook and Peter Pan come on those things? I dont know. Anyway, it was a strange boat that I had never seen before, but it was floating and ready to take us back to the Polynesian, so thats really all I cared about.
Once we got back to the Polynesian, all of the torches were lit. It was so pretty. I love making the walk back to the room at night at Disney. The combination of being tired and being at Disney always leaves me deliriously happy and feeling all warm and fuzzy on the inside.
When we got back to the room, I put on my pajamas and did what I said I was going to do watched Stacy and ate chips. Mom and Katie didnt stay too much longer at the Magic Kingdom and arrived back at the room not too long after we did. Im pretty sure they saw Mickeys Phillharmagic, and then decided to call it a night.
After a LONG day full of excitement, I was ready for bed. I fell asleep dreaming of the cheddar cheese soup that would be waiting for me the next day at my favorite park EPCOT!!
PS: I'm sorry for the lack of pictures in this update. I wasn't my usual obsessive picture taking self that night. I'm also sorry for the lack of updates lately. I've been busy and haven't had the chance to sit down and write much. The next few weeks are also going to be quite busy because we move my sister in at college on Thursday, and then I'm moving down to my HOUSE (sorry I'm just really excited that my friends and I are renting our own house off-campus...I feel so grown-up) a week after that. So the updates will probably be pretty irregular, but I hope you all stay tuned because there are plenty more adventures ahead.
PPS: THANKS FOR READING!!
