It's a Small World - funny DVC notary story

So, all our official paperwork for our first DVC contract came via UPS yesterday. Along with that lovely $19,000 totebag. :rotfl2:

My dh is doing this mainly for his love of me and the kids and our obsession with Disney. He is not a huge fan, although he likes nice vacations and I know he'll love the 1BR aspect of DVC. The kids have been talking of nothing but Disney since we got back on May 24th. And I've been talking about it quite a bit with arranging buying in to DVC. He thinks that we must be the only three people in Northern VA who talk so much Disney.

So, trying to spare him too much inconvenience with all the closing paperwork, I call yesterday to ensure that there is a notary at our local Navy Federal Credit Union. Yup, all day. So, after the kids get on the bus for their last full day of school, and before my dh has to drive into DC for work, we go by the Credit Union. He is sighing about how crazy it is to have to go to a notary to sign Disney papers. We sit down with the notary and she takes one look at the papers and says "Oh, we're members of DVC. We just got back from a week at Vero Beach. It was wonderful." A whole conversation ensues about where she owns, what vacations she has planned, how she's giving the contract to her son when he has his own family, etc. My dh just sat there looking somewhat stunned. But at least he doesn't think I'm that odd any more. :rotfl:

I think he's now a little frightened by how pervasive the love of Disney is...

LOL!

He should be afraid ... very afraid! Add ons are the next step! ;)

Thanks for the report! :)

Enjoy!

There are more DVC members in NOVA you think -- actually if you went to NFCU for your notary work we're in the same town.

We've been members since 1994 - and add -on-itis certainly did happen to us. However, we don't regret a single point purchased we've had so many magical family memories and look forward to many more.

We're close to you, also in Fairfax Co. (the western edge), but live very close to another full service branch out here. The notary and I were laughing about them running a credit check on people from NoVA, because they insisted on doing it with them there (they showed up unannounced for a tour of Saratoga Springs) - our thought was that if you could afford to live in Fairfax Co., chances were pretty darned good that you'd pass their credit requirements! :rotfl:

It IS a small world. Shortly after we bought DVC, and before our first trip, DW got into a little lunch discussion with colleagues at work about Disney and DVC.

One person said, "You bought a TIMESHARE???"

But before DW could respond, "You bought a $40,000 BOAT???," two of the other people at the table said they were also DVC members! You can imagine where the conversation for the rest of the lunch went.

Welcome home!

Thanks for the welcome home!

And you might not want to tell your DH, but that love for Disney is so pervasive that once you join DVC, he may start to talk about Disney alot more and eventually become a true Disney lover. My DH bought DVC for pretty much the same reason as yours. Well, this year he bought his first annual pass. As he said to me after he bought it, he held it up and said, "Bet you never thought you'd see me with one of these in your lifetime!" That's so true! Now he has a DVC luggage tag on his laptop for when he travels. And occassionally he comes home from work, telling me "I was talking to someone about DVC [or Walt Disney World or Hilton Head or....] today and telling them-" That love for Disney could get itself right under his skin!

Welcome Home, Elaine! And you can tell him my family who by the way are just over the bridge in Maryland and also Navy Fed members are just as fond of DVC and Disney!

SHHHHHHHH. We just became DVC members last month after three years of paying rack rate at OKW. I talked my DH into it without too much trouble, but he doesn't know about the add-onitis disease yet. I'm trying not to throw too much at him at once :rolleyes1

OUCH!!

You made a smart move.

Welcome home to all of you :) :)

I laughed when I read your post. For years, DH would not allow me to take the tour of DVC - it's a timeshare!!! bla bla and so we never did. I even tried to sneak a tour myself, but chickened out. We have been going to WDW 4 weeks a year for 18 years. So, when I inherited some money recently, I bought into DVC in MY name and added DH as associate member.

He began to mellow, and once we stayed in a one bedroom at VWL, he was convinced. Also, no need to pay that large sum of money at check in! And now with the DDP, and the discount on AP's it's a home run for us.

Now, he is talking all of his friends who are Disneyaddicts to join up! I never thought I would see the day....and when they talk it over, they agree. If you love disney and you go every year, it makes sense if you can afford it.

Beware of addonitis! We added on 3 times in 3 months! Now, I have to tell myself NO unless it is a really GREAT deal like Friends and Family.

I have 4 of those gold plated tote bags. My DH thinks it is a scream. I love them - they're sturdy!

Add-onitis is not a disease; it's a "condition."

DH and I were just talking in the car today about how others don't get the "Disney" thing...and add on to it that I'm a pin trading addict, and they REALLY don't get it....

But we're in Loudoun County, VA - so you AREN'T the only Disney addict in Northern VA, that's for sure! And I'm glad to know I'm not either!

We are also from Northern Virginia and Disneyaddicts. I spent 10 years not admitting to myself that we went to WDW every year. I thought DVC was too expensive and never took a tour. We almost always stayed at a Value Resort. Two years ago I was reading about DVC and found out how DVC worked. We took a tour on our next trip and fell in love.

We are leaving tomorrow to celebrate our daughter's high school graduation. We are staying in a 2BR at SS. The graduate is bringing 2 friends and our younger child is bringing one. Owning DVC made this possible I do not believe I would have the extra friends if we were in All Stars or Pop Century.

Because we brought annual passes last November, we are also going in August.
