Dispatched at 03:45 a.m. today for a woman in labor as the Captain signed on that we were responding the fire alarm dispatcher advised us that they had Dad on the phone and that the "baby was coming". Now, I'm the senior man on the crew and the driver which means at EMS calls I normally stay with the engine so, while responding I asked the Capt. if he wanted me to go in or stay with the rig? Well all three of the brothers shout "you're coming in with us".
When we arrive we find Mom in the garage and on the floor and she's ready to give birth I quickly examine her and yes the baby is on the way. Now the problem is that it's 15 degrees outside, the garage is open and she's starting to show the effects of hypothermia and this could complicate the delivery.
Well the brothers step up and go and get two 500 watt lights off the engine run them off the generator, close the door and place the lights behind us and they warm the garage enough to help.
We then get Mom in position and have her start to push and the baby starts to come out. After a few more pushes and relaxing she delivered a baby girl. At this point we followed up with our EMS treatment and the paramedic arrived and took over. The ambulance soon followed and transported Mom,
Dad and the new baby. And do you know after all that I never found out what they named her. So back at the fire station no one was going back to sleep so, the coffee was on and breakfast was served.
Have I told you how much I love my job!!!!!!
