Annie came home from the vet today (standard poodle). She was in for excessive thirst and urination after eating Easter ham. She didn't seem that thirsty to me and she wasn't searching for water in the house so when it was time for bed, I let her out to do her business and she came in and went to bed with me. In just over 3 hours she wet the bed twice. The first one I didn't feel, the second one I did. She never woke up!! In fact, I had trouble waking her up so I could strip the bed! She must not have slept at the vet to be that tired. Of course I didn't see her asking for water because she didn't need to. Its raining out and there are puddles she can help herself to. The second load is in the washer, the first in the drier and I have one more. In addition to that, some of it went through to the mattress. We have a Select Comfort and so I can unzip the top, which I did, and I have blotted and saturated it with Simple Solution. Let it soak, sucked it up with an upholstery cleaning tool on a little shampoo machine and blotting up the rest of the moisture with white towels. Tomorrow it will have to air dry all day and its GOING TO RAIN!!! I think I will suspend it somehow in the basement and run the dehumidifier near it. It isn't that thick and has a lot of synthetic fibers so it should dry out fairly quickly. The last one did, which lead to her trip to the vet and it didn't even leave a water ring. She is sleeping in the bathroom now on rubber backed throw rugs. I put a gate up so she won't feel isolated. She has never peed in the house like this before and obviously its not her fault but 3:30 AM??!

Oh no!

She did not even wake up? Poor thing!

And poor you!

Sorry to hear about your dog Dawn. Our cat, when she was pregnant, peed on the bed once...I had to do the same exact thing. Thank God our mattress is similar to yours, I was able to unzip the top and clean it thoroughly. They do dry really quick too.

FWIW, our 12 yo cocker spaniel also got into the Easter ham...but luckily, it only caused the runs. THAT was fun to deal with. It's a good thing he is adorable in all other ways, LOL (I am up with massive sinus pressure (allergies), so I decided to do some laundry too)

take care,
w

We are up! Misery loves company and I am so tired I want to go to bed. I can either Dis. or listen to Art Bell talk to people who talk to dead people. Why couldn't he have had Michu Kaku the String Theory Physicist on or something interesting. :confused3

Silly me! Thinking that a trip to vet was going to solve it so quickly. He did say it could take weeks. Its upset the balance of things relating to kidney function and thirst plus elevated her liver enzymes. We go back next Friday. I feel bad making her sleep in the bathroom but that's the way it is.

Dawn, I hope your furbaby gets better soon. It is no fun being up in the middle of the night cleaning up. I think alot of us have been where you are now. :grouphug:

Sorry your baby is feeling so bad. I feel for you having to do laundry at 3:30 am and hope you have a chance to take a well deserved nap today.

I don't know why that Simple Solution works so good and so quickly but there is absolutely no pee odor and not even a water ring on my pillow top mattress thing. It has been unzipped and drying since 3 am. and it should be dry by tonight. I am going to buy a tarp and cover my tile floor in the bathroom. She wet while she was sleeping in 4 hours in the bathroom!

Dogs cannot eat ham? It causes kidney problems? I had no idea, I've never read anything about it before.

Its the overload of sodium. Apparently even when the sodium straightens out it has triggered this weird thirst/urination response.

Its an enzyme cleaner that removes organic stains and odors, urine, feces, vomit, both human and pet. Its miraculous! You can get it by the gallon at Petco, etc or you can get the concentrated bottle and mix your own.

I think I learn something new on the DIS every day! I'm going to be sure and mention to my dh and dd not to slip our golden any scraps when they are fixing sandwiches from leftover ham.
