I have found some great flight rates on ITA. Is there anyway for me to book these without going through a travel agent? If so could someone give me some tips?

Directly through the individual airline?

I looked up the flight I saw on ITA on the airlines sight and it was double what ITA had listed. Am I missing something?

Not sure. Some of the airlines (American, for sure) list their prices as round-trip rather than one way, which I find annoying. Could that be why it was double?
