Back now from what is hands down the toughest weekend I've ever had.
We drove up to my brother's area on Friday and hit the worst traffic and weather ever. We spent the weekend at a hotel near his house, but had to go directly to the wake as we were already late. We were on the road for 3 1/2 hours even though he lives 40 miles from here.
I had forgotten what it was like to attend services for a young person. Oh, my goodness, the number of kids who come! I swear it seemed like 1,000 of them came on Friday. We didn't get out of the funeral home until 10:30 that night so we could receive them all.
My nephews attend college in Ohio and Delaware; a bunch of kids drove all the way from both place to see them. The number of kids who came was just staggering. Kids from their neighborhood, kids who went to high school with Lori, her old soccer buddies, girls from her Brownie troup, etc. So, so many young people.
Saturday's Mass could not have been more beautiful and touching. At my request, they played "Here I Am, Lord" as they brought her coffin into Church. The communion hymn was "Be Not Afraid" at the request of Lori's mother (my beloved sister-in-law). "On Eagle's Wings" was the song the music director chose for the ending hymn.
Both of my nephews gave eulogies at the Mass and did a fine a job. They are so distraught over losing their sister, but pulled themselves together to write and deliver beautiful speeches for her. I have asked their mother to copy them for me; I'm so proud of those boys.
This is such a devastating loss. When I lost my parents 14 years go, I thought that was the worst thing I would ever go through. When my cousin died in February, I thought that was the worst thing ever.
Losing our little girl has those events beat by far.
I have never been this heartbroken.
