I had planned a birthday weekend for my wife since last Fall. We booked the Plaza only to be bumped by the profiteers there to the Shelburne. We were not thrilled re the prospect of the Shelburne, in particular, its location which is a bit off the theatre-beaten path for NY. But since it was the only "show" in town for DVC / NYC we went with it.
I was very disturbed to read a post mid last week that described a very UNpleasant stay at the Shelburne that included a dirty room, indifferent service, and room keys that wouldn't work among other things. I had resolved that if the room was not acceptable I would flat out leave.
Arriving at the Shelburne was a bit of a story. Traveling in NYC is never easy. BUt from the moment when we finally pulled up for valet service everything turned just really well with but one "princess and the pea" irritation I will describe below.
When we checked in and presented our DVC reservations we were immediately upgraded to a two bedroom suite that had everything in it including the kitchen sink. Could have slept 10 people I think if I had known we were getting it! All very clean, all very acceptable. The front desk clerk, Faith, announced she loved anyone from DVC too.
Yes it is a bit of a hike from there to the theatre district although the hotel is in a very nice part of Manhattan. Cab was 8$ with the tip and well worth it.
We also ate in and had after play drinks at their restaurant. A bit pricey but this is NYC we are talking about. But very nice too as was the buffet breakfast on the following day.BTW The Lion King and The Producers were each wonderful in their own way.
So we had a wonderful time. I have NO doubt that the poor person who got such poor treatment complained to the right person(s) at DVC who no doubt, must have had a word or two with the SHelburne people and that any other DVC guests will be treated well as we have the right to be treated from now on.
I do lament the poor person who was terribly disappointed but I applaud DVC and Shelburne for following up.
NOw as for the "princess and the pea: The suite was on the second floor which ordinarily would have been fine with us. BUT the traffic noise was very loud ALL night. Sirens, honking horns, trucks... For a suburban bumpkin like me who moved from NYC to the sticks it was very unsettling and we did not get much of a very restful sleep.
So I suggest two things; do not dismiss the Shelburne but if you go get an upper floor!
