Need a new point and shoot camera for the hubby to use our price range is $500 and under. This is for our disney trip. I am buying myself a dslr and still havent figured out which one i am gonna get I have a $700 price range for that one So any help on both would be great.

It's hard to tell what you are asking for. *All PnS cameras are compromises for cost and size reasons compared to DSLr

The best high ISO compact PnS is the Sony RX-100 with its large 1" sensor (marketing term but it is the same size as the Nikon 1) and fast Zeiss glass that starts at f/1.8. But at $650 it's a bit above your price range.

For me, I went with a travel zoom category camera. *Still mostly pocketable with a tremendous zoom.

I have the Sony HX-30 (same camera as HX-20 + WiFi) and have had a lot of fun with it. It has a 20x optical zoom with a 35mm equivalent 25-500mm (or like a crop body DSLr with 12.5-250mm) an amazing 1080p 60fps HD video with great 3-way optical stabilization that will probably beat your DSLr, especially when comparing hand held results.

*If your DH is looking for a camera to leave on Auto and have really nice pictures straight from the camera with out post processing, (and enough manual controls to have more fun with) then I think Sony is a great choice.

Here's a few pics from mine:

I entered MK, walked up to the hub, there was a castle show going on with a decent crowd already watching, so I kept on walking towards Tomowwowland, then I saw Mickey and Minnie on stage. *With the camera on Auto, I turned the camera on, zoom, click, saw the result on the screen and realized I love this camera because I didn't have to wait to get a great spot in the crowd, or lug around a tripod..

And I loved having the zoom on the Safari:

And Wishes, from the Boardwalk *over the Yacht Club ( yes I really needed a tripod not a railing for this 2 sec exposure, but still it's an impressive reach)

I also believe that there is no one best camera for everyone. *Prior to the RX-100 the Cannon s95/s100 was the king of pocketable low light cameras and is still in your range. *And Panasonic just announced a few new cameras with fast glass that look appealing, so keep looking around, go to a store to feel them in your hands, and keep asking questions.

so are these pics taken with the Sony HX-30? sony also has a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX100V. we are looking to go a little more better than the cheap p&s. We want to be able to take better pictures. I just love the pics you took.

Taking better pictures has a whole lot more to do with the photographer than the camera. That said, features I would look for to allow me the most flexibility to do what I wanted with a point and shoot are full manual controls (with manual focus if possible), a wide max aperture (f/2.8 at least but the wider the better), image stabilization if you go with a super zoom, broad ISO range with solid performance (the performance is subjective but go to someplace like dpreview.com where they have good sample pictures).

I personally tend to lean toward Fuji, Canon and Panasonic when I'm looking at point and shoots.

Thank you for the kind words!

Yes, Sony makes a fine bridge camera , the HX-200 based on the same sensor which is the same sensor with more zoom behind faster f/2.8 Zeiss glass at the wide end. You also get the viewfinder and control ring that I do not have on my HX-30.

The RX-100 is the model they introduced last year. On Dpreview.com many RX-100 users noted, in terms of features, there was little reason to upgrade this year. The few that did upgrade noted that the main differences seemed to be faster AF speed and much faster video recording start time, along with a bit of high-ISO improvement. But there are still some HX-100 users that make decent claims to IQ, so I would look at both. Oops I was talking HX is the bridge cam RX is the new 1" high quality sendor camera!

That said, if you are considering a bridge camera, you need to look into the Panasonic FZ-200. Its "only 24x" but what a magnificant 24x! This recently announced camera has a fixed aperature f/2.8 across the entire zoom (where the Sony extends to f/5.8)

http://www.dpreview.com/previews/panasonic-lumix-dmc-fz200

So while the Sony is arguably the top pick right now with its combination of photo and video, that FZ looks like it will trump it.

The f/2.8 across the entire range is impressive. It puts it's light gathering ability on par with higher end DSLR zoom lenses.

The rx100 is a brand new model, just recently released. I'm shocked at the number of reviews calling it the best point&shoot camera ever made, by far. (including Disney blogger Tom Bricker, the New York Times, and others).
I'm getting it delivered tomorrow and will be using it at Disney in a few weeks. It's expensive for a p&s, but I like dslr quality, and I got tired of dragging around the big camera on the last trip.

The canon g11 has made us very happy.

Today I went to the Science and Industry museum and brought my new T4i with the f3.5-5.6 18-55 kit lens (only lens I have right now) and I was missing my g11, lol. I'm a total noob with it, so I'm still early in the learning process.

I love that g11.

Steve Huff praised it in his recent review. You have to admit that Sony is the best sensor maker. I moved from DSLR to the Nex 7 and love the loss of weight. The RX100 really looks awesome.

My RX100 should arrive tonight, looking forward to playing with it. And looking forward to Disney without carrying a large DSLR. I'm enough of a photo enthusiast to want SLR quality photos, play with things like HDR, etc, but not enough of an enthusiast to master every manual setting and understand every nuance of exposure, etc.

Oops thanks for pointing out my HX100 (bridge with small sensor) vs RX (compact s95/s100 killer with the 1" sensor) confusion.

And very cool about the RX-100 purchase! I'd love to see some DisbeyWorld pics from it.

Give me 4 weeks. Let's see how it stacks up to the Sony Alpha DSLR I used for the last 2 trips. First trip, got some good pics. Second trip, I started getting too lazy to pull the DSLR out, so let's see how we do with a super high quality point and shoot.

I'll bring my ipad with a connection kit, not sure what I'll use to edit pics. Maybe snapseed.

These pictures are terrific. These were taken with the Sony HX30v? I love the RX100 but I love the price of the HX30 more:rotfl2:

Thank you!
Yes, all of those pictures were taken with the HX30v (same camera as the HX-20 + WiFi). I really like the versatility of the zoom.

In case you are curious, here's my trip report with some more:

It would be nice to have both the RX-100 for general IQ, and the HX-30 for when I need zoom, but yes, that money thing gets in the way ;). But, yes, the RX-100 can take pictures at a whole other level if you take advantage of it.
