My nine-year-old wants an American Girl doll in the worst way. Is this still appropriate for her age? I don't want to drop that much money if it's something she is going to grow out of right away. I don't know the age range of dolls anymore...
Thank you! I don't know anything about them. This info is very helpful! My daughter only ever asks Santa for one thing each year, and this is the thing this year.My DD is 6. She has two of the 18" dolls and plays with them every day! She is asking for all the new AG Wellie Wishers (and their $250 house - ouch!) for Christmas. I got one when I was 10, when they first came out and I still have it. Someday I'll give it to dd, but she's still a little too rough with them. Yes, they are so expensive, but I think they are well worth the cost. The age range for the 18" dolls is 8 yrs and up. The Girl of the year holds her value better than the Truly Me ones, plus the a Girl of the Year has her own books and a movie. I'd get the Girl of the a Year (Lea) if I was getting one.
Actually, I'd go with the historical (Be Forever). They're the original American Girl (albeit a bit rebranded since then) and in my opinion are the reason to pay so much for a doll. The historic ones are set apart from the Target/Walmart/TRU 18 inch dolls. They have a full series of books and historically-based accessories. I agree that Truly Me doesn't hold its value very well at all, but Be Forever has got to be similar to Girl of the Year in terms of value retention (I don't think Isabelle or Grace held value particularly well after the end-of-year sales for both of them). And you can buy the Be Forever stuff even after the current year is over.My DD is 6. She has two of the 18" dolls and plays with them every day! Sorry to hijack this thread... where is the best place to buy the dolls? From AG directly? Are they less expensive at a different retailer?
Just received the new catalog last week and I did not see a 20% off coupon. I was at the AG store last Friday and there was a sign at the entrance that read "20% Truly Me collections." And I received an email about that too. It's on a collection you create: 1 doll & 1 special extra (like a purse) & 2 outfits. I've been shopping AG for years and I don't recall ever seeing a 20% off coupon. As Christmas approaches, AG seems to offer 20% off shipping and/or sometimes free shipping with orders of $100 or more. Like another poster mentioned, I have seen AG gift cards at Costco last year. Get a $100 gift certificate for $25 but I haven't seen them since. AG recently started a reward program, I just earned $10 this go around. Every dollar counts, especially at American Girl.Hi! I'm looking for an American Girl 20% off coupon from the most recent catalog. Mine didn't have one and my DD wants lots of AG this Christmas. If you received one that you won't be using, I'd love to! PM me, please. Thanks!
My daughter started with AG dolls around 7. I believe that wasn't within AG "guidelines" but IMO, I think girls start growing out of the doll phase to the later age(s) they had listed. My nine-year-old wants an American Girl doll in the worst way. OP, If you have a Costco nearby, you may want to look there. Ours still have the AG gift cards for 20% off!

I read on some of the facebook groups that AG will start being sold at ToysRUs and Kohls this Christmas season. There seems to be alot of speculation that they will be excluded from the sales coupons in those stores.
The best place to buy AG dolls is directly from AG, either through online order, phone order, or in store. Over the past couple of years, they were running many discounts and offers through Jill's Steals and Deals on the Today Show, Zulily, and on their site. With the new management, they are moving away from those deep discounts but pushing for more visibility by making product available at other retailers. AG now has a rewards program on their site and will probably still run occasional free shipping promotions. The coupons in the catalog are being sent to select customers and not all to entice sales from people who may not be regular customers. Be aware that there are scams on eBay. People will offer a new in box doll below retail and have it shipped directly to you from AG with express shipping. What they are doing is pocketing your payment and using a stolen credit card to pay AG. You can end up being in investigated as part of the fraud. You can get some nice used dolls on eBay but I'd stay away from the NIB listings that are too good to be true.
Ah, I miss the Jill's Steals and Deals. My daughter was starting her collection at just the right point in time! Now she's got enough dolls and I can add the outfits slowly as the smaller sales come through.
